Pan It! - 2022 Challenge

Welcome to the Pan It Challenge, 2022 Edition!!

I'm claiming a 2022 that's greater than our wildest imaginations, also for my longtimers this will be our FIFTH YEAR doing this challenge. Thanks to all who've stuck around and everyone who's tested themselves and jumped into the madness. You all are amazing 😘

The "Rules"

To accommodate a variety of interests, you all are encouraged to pick items to pan that are most suitable to your collections.  For some, this might mean focusing on a particular type of product (like lipstick) and for others this may include a larger variety spanning your entire makeup or skincare routine.

Getting Started (please share the following)

  • Which item(s) you would like to work on
  • How long you will work on said item
  • Goal: explore a new item, revisit an old item, decide whether to keep pass or trash, and/or completely finish item, etc.
  • Starting photo of item

Please Use This Thread To...

  • share what item(s) you are working on,
  • provide comparative progress photos of your item(s) monthly (at the beginning of the month when possible),
  • ask questions,
  • encourage others,
  • motivate others with the looks you create with your item(s)

Tips and Tricks to Panning/Getting Some Use Out of Your Stash:

Spoiler
  • Take photos!!  When you think you aren’t making a dent in anything look back at those photos, I’m certain you’ll see some changes 😃
  • If you goal is to hit pan or use something up entirely, try concentrating your brush/applicator in the same area each time you use it
  • Multitask your products: eyeshadows as highlighter, lipstick as blush, eyeshadow as brow powder, etc.
  • Layer eyeshadow to create different colors (this is especially helpful to get use out of shades you’re not fond of).
  • Have shadows with a ton of fall out?  Use water
  • Watching the progress of others’ can be fun but try not compare your progress to theirs.  We all use our makeup differently and have different goals.
  • Don’t restrict yourself to only using the item(s) you are working on.  It’s more than OK to incorporate other items or take a break!
  • Makeup should be fun….if you begin to dread doing your makeup because you made a commitment to use a product that you now hate, TOSS IT!  Do not force yourself to use up something you don’t like.  Move on to something else!  (This includes excluding particular shades from your goals if focusing on palettes, etc.)

Ideas to Help You Pan Those Items:

Spoiler
  • Roll the dice: number your items and use a random number generator to pick what you will use each (day/week/month/etc.)
  • Layer/Mask: items you are less fond of under things you like
  • Pan a Look: at the beginning of the week pick a look that you can wear everyday
  • Recreate: a look worn by a fellow BICer, celebrity, etc.
  • Spice up an "everyday" look by adding subtle pops of color (in the crease or on the lower lash line, mix lip products to make shades wearable, etc.)

Re: Pan It! - 2022 Challenge

Your eyeshadow pan project is such an inspiration @itsfi. I need to get back to mine 😘

Re: Pan It! - 2022 Challenge

Aww thank you @blackkitty2014! 😘 I’ve been so inspired and encouraged by you and our fellow planners. It’s motivational to see everyone’s progress and I always feel supported by folks here. 🥰

Re: Pan It! - 2022 Challenge

Congratulations, @itsfi!! What an amazing yearly progress!! Everytime I see your Biba palette progress, I'm so impressed!!

Re: Pan It! - 2022 Challenge

Awww, thank you @haleyvvvv. It started out as something to focus on and has really ended up morphing into something so much more.

Re: Pan It! - 2022 Challenge

@itsfi love seeing your progress!

Re: Pan It! - 2022 Challenge

@lmaster, thank you. Another year down.

Re: Pan It! - 2022 Challenge

@itsfi i love your end of year summary! great lessons learned - the only way to make it through a pan is to start thinking outside of the box with how products can be used. bonus if you end up liking the new product more than the original intended use! it can be hard to work through products when you're not in love with them. so excited to see what you have planned for 2023, and i'll be following your biba progress through this next year!

Re: Pan It! - 2022 Challenge

Thank you @cianni! 😊 Doing a project pan has been eye opening and you are so right - we have to get a little creative sometime to keep ourselves engaged in our panning. Looking forward to another year!

Re: Pan It! - 2022 Challenge

Love your lessons @itsfi and I'll definitely be trying the nail polish trick, which will give me reason to enjoy a few powders I'd otherwise toss. I have a mixed eye/cheek palette I'm pulling apart this week to keep some of the blushers, and just realized some of the shadows would make great nail colors.

In awe of your Biba progress and wow-- finished those final 2 items more right in the clutch-- excellent.

Re: Pan It! - 2022 Challenge

@heavyhedon, the hardest part I had with the eyeshadow as nail polish was getting the right ratio down. One eyeshadow pan and one full size clear polish seems to work just fine - I usually use up some of the clear polish so it’s easier to mix. I tried it with a mini bottle of clear polish and oops. Fine for first couple of uses but it got clumpy and thick quick. 😬 Or maybe I just didn’t mix it enough. 🤔 This’ll help me use up my clear polishes and eyeshadows. 🙌🏼

Biba has been a good thing to look back on - to remind me about being consistent with using my products. The pan thread helps so much too, not just working through products but knowing how long it takes me to get through stuff helps with my spending. I certainly still buy things 😂 but am more mindful of what I pick up or how much I buy. A win-win!

Re: Pan It! - 2022 Challenge

Forever in awe at your Biba progress @itsfi !

Re: Pan It! - 2022 Challenge

Awww, thank you @missjeanie! 😃 The palette and panning really gave me something to focus on during the stay at home mandates. Now I’m just trying to work my way through most of the shadows in the palette.

Re: Pan It! - 2022 Challenge

Finale!

What a year. It's been crazier than I can say here and this past week just topped it off with an insane blizzard with hurricane level winds that shook every timber for 2 days of total whiteout while dumping so much snow on us, we were fully snowed in for 6 days here in Buffalo NY! Best wishes for speedy recovery to people in other states hit by wild weather.

Had many goals this year and only met some of them. With 6 seasonal mini pans, I used over a hundred products, though and that's more than I might have otherwise.

Started Jan. off well by finishing up a mini Glitter Flip from Ciate.

I hit pan on three new shades in my Pixi Brow Palette and expanded the three that were already there.

My sample use didn't hit the goal I'd hoped for, but in the end I did kill off 25 samples/foils/ of various lip and complexion products and used up a trial sized UD Primer potion and three foundation trial sizes. Loved the Purlisse BB, not so much the Wander Beauty one, and still not sure about the Lock Color foundation.

Plugging on I killed off the ELF Essence, and finally used up the last of a blush, Kitty Pink from DLS, that I've had for years.

Did not hit pan on the one measly shade of the TF Sweet Peach eye palette that I attempted to pan, but made a small dip and foudn  out it makes a gorgeous blush topper. Unofficially nearly finished a gloss that moved in & out of the mini-pans. And lastly, made some progress on a SC Micellar water I rolled in this autumn:

What I've learned this year: to simplify, but not oversimplify, for next year.

From initial lofty goals of mowing down tons of samples and hitting some major pan, my driving force became the seasonal pans; it would be nice to incorporate some of that energy into the coming year, but not in the same way. This year there were definitely things I wanted to use up, but seems like I'm over that now. Decluttering has happened and one more good sweep through is coming, to prepare the way.

2022 has also taught me that I really love my beautiful & varied makeup collection, but not how I'm making use of it, so that will have to change🤔

I have a good idea of the structure for 2023's Pan It!, and I'm happy I get to spend time today figuring out all the details.

That's all, thanks for reading and Happy New Year, everyone! 🎆

**Addendum-- forgot that I used up a Rare Beauty mini lip balm!

Re: Pan It! - 2022 Challenge

@heavyhedon You still knocked it out of the park!! Can't wait to see what you decide on for this year.

Re: Pan It! - 2022 Challenge

Amazing progress, @heavyhedon!! I love your note to simplify your panning (that was definitely my downfall this year). It sounds like you got some good use out of a lot of products and finished a number of them!!

Re: Pan It! - 2022 Challenge

@haleyvvvv -- Rotating through my stuff was probably the best part of it, but glad I remembered the extra lippy I finished, since I received 6 new balms for Christmas!

Re: Pan It! - 2022 Challenge

You did amazing!! @heavyhedon

Re: Pan It! - 2022 Challenge

Thanks @lmaster -- I m setting smaller, different goals this year.

Re: Pan It! - 2022 Challenge

Love your panning year in review @heavyhedon! You did such an excellent job with your projects and seasonal themed panning. We keep seeing more and more pan in that Pixi brow palette - from EVERY shade - super impressive! 🙌 Completely with you on simplifying. 👊 I was overly ambitious and it stressed me out a few times. Taking notes from you on decluttering too. There's gonna be some things that are just gonna have to go, no matter how much I may want to hold onto them, for sentimentality reasons or otherwise.

Re: Pan It! - 2022 Challenge

@itsfi --TY, I'm really happy how much I got out of that Pixi Brow Palette, and I think it cost $12 way back when, so money's worth has been had! I was way ambitious last year too and got in over my head a number of times. Had other mini pans planned that I ended up scrapping instead of doing.

Re: Pan It! - 2022 Challenge

@heavyhedon great pans, and I love your takeaways!! so true how there are so many ways to use things in our collection. excited to see your restructured Pan Plan for 2023!!

ps - hope everything was okay for you with the storm! I'm not too far out from the buffalo border, and know you've been hit with a few storms lately!
