Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

*12/15/19 - The 2020 thread is now live: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿพ Hi All!

Can y'all believe 2019 is literally knocking on the door??  Given its proximity it's high time we get the 2019 Panning Challenge Rolling.

The "Rules"

To accommodate a variety of interests, you all are encouraged to pick items to pan that are most suitable to your collections.  For some, this might mean focusing on a particular type of product (like lipstick) and for others this may include a larger variety spanning your entire makeup or skincare routine.

Getting Started (please share the following)

  • Which item(s) you would like to work on
  • How long you will work on said item
  • Goal: explore a new item, revisit an old item, decide whether to keep pass or trash, and/or completely finish item, etc.
  • Starting photo of item

Please Use This Thread To...

  • share what item(s) you are working on,
  • provide comparative progress photos of your item(s) monthly (at the beginning of the month when possible),
  • ask questions,
  • encourage others,
  • motivate others with the looks you create with your item(s)

Tips and Tricks to Panning/Getting Some Use Out of Your Stash:

Spoiler
  • Take photos!!  When you think you arenโ€™t making a dent in anything look back at those photos, Iโ€™m certain youโ€™ll see some changes ๐Ÿ˜ƒ
  • If you goal is to hit pan or use something up entirely, try concentrating your brush/applicator in the same area each time you use it
  • Multitask your products: eyeshadows as highlighter, lipstick as blush, eyeshadow as brow powder, etc.
  • Layer eyeshadow to create different colors (this is especially helpful to get use out of shades youโ€™re not fond of).
  • Have shadows with a ton of fall out?  Use water
  • Watching the progress of othersโ€™ can be fun but try not compare your progress to theirs.  We all use our makeup differently and have different goals.
  • Donโ€™t restrict yourself to only using the item(s) you are working on.  Itโ€™s more than OK to incorporate other items or take a break!
  • Makeup should be funโ€ฆ.if you begin to dread doing your makeup because you made a commitment to use a product that you now hate, TOSS IT!  Do not force yourself to use up something you donโ€™t like.  Move on to something else!  (This includes excluding particular shades from your goals if focusing on palettes, etc.)

Ideas to Help You Pan Those Items:

Spoiler
  • Roll the dice: number your items and use a random number generator to pick what you will use each (day/week/month/etc.)
  • Layer/Mask: items you are less fond of under things you like
  • Pan a Look: at the beginning of the week pick a look that you can wear everyday
  • Recreate: a look worn by a fellow BICer, celebrity, etc.
  • Spice up an "everyday" look by adding subtle pops of color (in the crease or on the lower lash line, mix lip products to make shades wearable, etc.)

Past Panning Challenges:

Spoiler

May pan be ever in your favor!

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

@ElleElleG ahhh right! Itโ€™s so hard to stop once you start picking up palettes with all the new releases ๐Ÿ˜ฐ I definitely have ones I have barely touched. Im so tempted by all the newness

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

It's the same for me @cianni! I've been doing enough shopping this year to make Rouge at Sephora AND Diamond at Ulta!! That means I need to enjoy my beauty bounty in 2019.

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

Yes @sephoraaddict918 itโ€™s gonna be fun!! I think Iโ€™m also gonna have an unofficial challenge to myself to find new ways to use some of my less conventional highlighters ๐Ÿ˜‚

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

Kicking things off with a request....Help me decide what to select for my year long project.

I've narrowed it down to these three palettes from oldest to newest additions in my collection

Lorac Mega Pro 3Lorac Mega Pro 3

ABH Master Palette by MarioABH Master Palette by Mario

ABH Modern RenaissanceABH Modern Renaissance

Of the three I gravitate towards the Lorac the least; many of the lighter shimmers look the same on the lid and there are quite a few shades I will likely never reach for. The Master Palette ranks as one of my all time favorite. Part of me wants to hold on to if forever but I also don't want the shadows to go to waste. Modern Renaissance is nice but it's not a "necessary" palette in my collection. When I don't feel like selecting single matte shadows to travel with this is a perfect companion.

I'm addition to the long term project I aim to do another year of one month one palette so I can continue to get use out of other palettes......

Which palette would you recommend I choose and why ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿง

@elleelleg go big or go home ๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ˜†

@ElleElleG go big or go home ๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ˜†

Re: @elleelleg go big or go home ๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ˜†

LOL!  @angelKiss24 the Lorac would mean going WAY big

RE: Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

I say go for the Master primarily since you know you like it, and sprinkle in a shade from Lorac once a week to put some dents in it. Iโ€™m in the same boat of โ€œbut I want it to last forever!/Iโ€™m saving it for special occasions!โ€ with certain things and I have to tell myself to enjoy it while itโ€™s good and there will ALWAYS be things I like just as much that I find later (even if I donโ€™t believe myself in the moment). Perhaps Modern Renaissance can be your go-to for the challenges throughout the year and 2020โ€™s focus since its fairly new and youโ€™re just not feeling it currently

Re: RE: Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

More good points @KeriCherryDee !  Yall are making this hard, LOL.  I like the idea of picking a shade to incorporate into a each look for the week, hmmm.

Also, so true that there will always be something else to like.  If I keep minimizing my use of things I love they'll end up old and unused regardless.

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

i'm going to say lorac 3...if you don't gravitate towards it naturally putting it in a project pay help you use it up.  plus you're doing one month one palette so you'll have options!

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

Good points @sparklekai My hesitation with the Lorac is that 1) I know I won't try to finish each and every shade (which isn't a big deal since this challenge is about panning in whatever way fits us best) but also 2) getting frustrated that I don't finish it entirely, LOL

Thanks!!

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

Wow! @ElleElleG, you've already dented so many shadows in those palettes. I love the ABH Mario palette and wish they would bring it back! I would say aim big and go for the Lorac, it looks like more than half has dented in already ๐Ÿ™‚

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

OMG @HelenBT I feel like we need to start a petition or something to get them to bring it back ๐Ÿค“

Ahh it looks like people are split between the Mario and Lorac ๐Ÿ™ˆ; thanks for your input!!

RE: Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

The Mario palette has such beautiful colors. I could see why itโ€™s been your go-to palette.

Re: RE: Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

@dennisselisseth I feel like I don't have to think when I use it, which I love.  It makes rushing out of the door in the morning that much easier

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

@ElleElleG The Mario Palette looks beautiful. I had never seen it before.

I think you should continue with that.

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

You hadn't seen it @naturalooks15 ๐Ÿ˜ฒ๐Ÿ˜ฒ๐Ÿ˜ฒ๐Ÿ˜ฒ๐Ÿ˜ฒ.  I want to say this came out when Modern Renaissance did but that one got the majority of the hype (I managed to avoid picking that one up for a year post release).

Anyway, thanks for your input!!

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

@ElleElleG  I wasnโ€™t into palettes up until 2 months ago and bought my very first palette (Soft Glam) in one of the recent sales so I donโ€™t think I was paying attention earlier. I used to just hang out in skincare or dry skin groups I think (that too just reading, barely posting ๐Ÿ˜„).

Realizing it was a good things that I wasnโ€™t into palettes as itโ€™s slippery slope. ๐Ÿ˜• they are all so pretty, hard to resist. I bought many (by my standards)  in last two months after that first Soft Glam.

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

ABH was a good place to start @naturalooks15 !  Ha, it's definitely a slippery slope.  One thing that helps is look for people on social media who rearrange palettes and/or compare them to previously released palettes.  Many look nice on their own but when rearranged or beside other palettes they can lose their appeal.

With the number you have now you have a great opportunity to figure out what formula(s) you prefer before spending unnecessary money.

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

@ellelleg Keep going on Mario! You were enjoying it at least for a while, it travels well, and it's pretty flexible as far as creating looks.

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

@fieldsofclover but I love him (the palette, don't know the man ๐Ÿ˜‚).  Good points BUT isn't that a good reason to not use focus on it since I'll use it anyway?  ....

Spoiler
LOL I'm trying to talk myself out of using this which is why I posted my choice dilemma ๐Ÿ˜œ

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

@ElleElleGDoooooo eeeeet ๐Ÿ˜‚

It's older than your Modern Ren. How terrible would it be if the formula went south while you were off working on the newer palette? ๐Ÿ˜‡
