Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

*12/15/19 - The 2020 thread is now live: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿพ Hi All!

Can y'all believe 2019 is literally knocking on the door??  Given its proximity it's high time we get the 2019 Panning Challenge Rolling.

The "Rules"

To accommodate a variety of interests, you all are encouraged to pick items to pan that are most suitable to your collections.  For some, this might mean focusing on a particular type of product (like lipstick) and for others this may include a larger variety spanning your entire makeup or skincare routine.

Getting Started (please share the following)

  • Which item(s) you would like to work on
  • How long you will work on said item
  • Goal: explore a new item, revisit an old item, decide whether to keep pass or trash, and/or completely finish item, etc.
  • Starting photo of item

Please Use This Thread To...

  • share what item(s) you are working on,
  • provide comparative progress photos of your item(s) monthly (at the beginning of the month when possible),
  • ask questions,
  • encourage others,
  • motivate others with the looks you create with your item(s)

Tips and Tricks to Panning/Getting Some Use Out of Your Stash:

Spoiler
  • Take photos!!  When you think you arenโ€™t making a dent in anything look back at those photos, Iโ€™m certain youโ€™ll see some changes ๐Ÿ˜ƒ
  • If you goal is to hit pan or use something up entirely, try concentrating your brush/applicator in the same area each time you use it
  • Multitask your products: eyeshadows as highlighter, lipstick as blush, eyeshadow as brow powder, etc.
  • Layer eyeshadow to create different colors (this is especially helpful to get use out of shades youโ€™re not fond of).
  • Have shadows with a ton of fall out?  Use water
  • Watching the progress of othersโ€™ can be fun but try not compare your progress to theirs.  We all use our makeup differently and have different goals.
  • Donโ€™t restrict yourself to only using the item(s) you are working on.  Itโ€™s more than OK to incorporate other items or take a break!
  • Makeup should be funโ€ฆ.if you begin to dread doing your makeup because you made a commitment to use a product that you now hate, TOSS IT!  Do not force yourself to use up something you donโ€™t like.  Move on to something else!  (This includes excluding particular shades from your goals if focusing on palettes, etc.)

Ideas to Help You Pan Those Items:

Spoiler
  • Roll the dice: number your items and use a random number generator to pick what you will use each (day/week/month/etc.)
  • Layer/Mask: items you are less fond of under things you like
  • Pan a Look: at the beginning of the week pick a look that you can wear everyday
  • Recreate: a look worn by a fellow BICer, celebrity, etc.
  • Spice up an "everyday" look by adding subtle pops of color (in the crease or on the lower lash line, mix lip products to make shades wearable, etc.)

Past Panning Challenges:

Spoiler

May pan be ever in your favor!

Re: RE: Re: RE: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

I could only dream of doing such @KeriCherryDee !!  Best of luck on your journey, glad to have you here to share it with us!!

Re: RE: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

Bar Soaps... I have to admit... my significant other traveled a lot for work.  He used to bring home the extra shampoos/conditioners/body lotions and bars of soaps from hotels.  Im talking like 40-50 bars of soap stashed in his cupboard in the washroom... why?????? lol I finally took it upon myself to start using these up in the washroom when I wash my hands.  Theres still a considerable stash in there but on the bright side I haven't had to buy hand soap in over a year.  -- And yes... I did finally convince him he doesn't need to take all the minis home lol

RE: Re: RE: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

@missjeanie THIS!! I had only two or three small ones left in the cupboard that I thought I could get done by the end of January.... then my mom goes on a three-day work trip before Thanksgiving and I swear she raided the hotel maidโ€™s cart!! Even though Iโ€™m the only one who likes using bar soap!!

Re: RE: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

@missjeanie You can never have enough soap! Enjoy using your stash!

Best,

Rebecca

Re: RE: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

Good Luck @KeriCherryDee!! Your goals are mighty, but we know you can do it!

RE: Re: RE: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

Aww thank you so much @sephoraaddict918 !!

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

For me, 2019 will be all about putting a dent in my collection of eye shadow palettes. I am focusing my efforts on 3 palettes: Tartelette, Naked 1, and Chocolate Bar. Starting in January, I will use 1 palette for the month, then rotate to the next one. And I'll do a check in after 6 months (Already marked on my calendar!) for a progress update.

I've attached a current photo of the 3 palettes. Any suggestions on which one I should start with?

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

Whew you picked 3 OG palettes @sephoraaddict918 ! One month one palette is one of my favorite ways to not get bored so of course I love that you plan to rotate each month.  My vote is for starting with either the Naked palette or Too Faced.  I found the Naked palette took the longest for me to hit pan on but of course everyone pans differently.

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

@ElleElleG I started doing One Month One Palette with the Naked Palette a few months ago, and I feel it is a total game changer! There definitely has to be a lot of product in those Naked pans because I thought I would hit pan in something during that month, but it still looks like I've barely made a dent!

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

They really did pack a lot into those pans @sephoraaddict918 .  I promise that once you see some pan it widens pretty easily!

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

@sephoraaddict918 I say the Chocolate Bar, because I'm allergic to Too Faced shadows so I like to live vicariously through other people ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿซ

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

It's kismet @fieldsofclover!! I was actually leaning toward the Chocolate Bar because I haven't used it in a while.

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

2019 is going to be operation eliminate purple and pink for me! basically if you know me i'm a tad obsessive...so i have a very detailed inventory, including having this colour coded based on when i purchased them.  purple items were purchased in 2015 and pink in 2016.  my goal is going to be to use up as many of these products in 2019 as possible.  i'll post on January 1st (probaby) with where these groups are number wise for the start of this project and which items i'll be starting with first.  i know i won't finish everything & some of these are going to be hella hard but we shall see where we end up!

the one thing i'm trying to decide is how to decide what to start with...pick intentionally? randomly?

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

Wait wait wait color coded?!?! @sparklekai you slay me every time, LOL

Perhaps start with something that will motivate you to keep going and pair it with something you maybe don't gravitate towards as much for balance?

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

@ElleElleG i'm a tad obsessive ๐Ÿ˜›

i think i'm going to work on a couple of randomly picked items - maybe 5 from each list and then a bunch of selected items that i think won't frustrated the life out of me

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

Not getting frustrated is key @sparklekai !! Love the idea of randomly picking multiple items, that certain helps keep you on your toes.

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

I vote for picking randomly @sparklekai

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

@sparklekai Wow that's a really good idea... can I borrow it? Spreadsheeters unite!

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

@fieldsofclover of course!!!!  #teamspreadsheetpanners ๐Ÿ™‚

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

Iโ€™m so excited to join this for 2019! Iโ€™m trying a no/low buy for 2019 because I organized my makeup and skincare only to realize that I literally have NO room. Time to start using what I have!

i think my goal will be to finish things completely - mostly skin care, hair care and masks. And I may join in one this one palette one month thing because I went from one MAC quad (I know... that literally was the only eyeshadow I owned till 2017....) to I believe 8-10 full palettes. Not quite enough for one a month but I have a couple of those 35 pan morphe ones so maybe I can revisit those ones in two different months during the year. Ah this is exciting!!

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

Welcome @cianni ! Love that you're focusing on skincare.  Definitely give the one month one palette a go, it shed a huge light on what I need/want out of my eyeshadows.

BTW, I know the feeling one day you have your go to palette and the next you're almost swimming in them ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚
