No-buy

I went way overboard with purchases this month (2 orders with Sephora last week alone).  So I decided to put myself on a "no-buy" for the entire month of July.  Has anyone successfully done this before?  I know I won't be able to read fashion and beauty blogs or open emails from my favorite stores, but any other suggestions?

Thanks!

Re: No-buy

Thanks ladies! Smiley Happy

Serendipity - I'm definitely going to keep swapping!  Spending $2 on shipping to get something "new" is so much cheaper than buying new and hoarding stuff I'm not even using.  Fingers crossed on another TSB!

Mermade - So basically I won't be able to talk to you for the entire month of July then?  Smiley Happy

Charlotte - The notebook is a great idea!  I bet I'll have forgotten most of the things I wrote in there by the end of the month.

Waterbaby - Yay!  You should consider swapping on MUA.

Pocketvenus - I'm going to write those questions on a card and put it with my debit card in my wallet.  I think  I'll add, "Do I already have something just like this?"  I've noticed I tend to buy the same style/shades over and over.

Ohhenri - Are you with me and waterbaby?  Smiley Happy

Victorian - Withdrawls are almost a certainty.  Smiley Sad

Tiffany - I forgot about that thread!  Let's revive it!

Re: No-buy

@kalex: We can still TALK!!!!!! Smiley Very Happy--Just not about make-up!!!

After my next 2 polish hauls ( I have them planned,) I'm going on a no -buy, too!

Shop ypur own stash part two is a GREAT idea!!!!

Re: No-buy

What gets me through these times of saving vs. spending? Going through everything I have already, and organizing It all. Sifting through and giving away or throwing away items I'm not all that happy about. Giving away items that are just sitting there taking up space makes me feel so much better. Plus knowing that Items I've been hoarding are being appreciated by others to me is such a good feeling it takes the place of the rush of the immediate satisfaction that I get when I buy stuff. The trick is not to do it all at once. Start with makeup move to clothes and other items slowly.

Re: No-buy

I'm with you on the no-buy! I NEED to enforce this no-buy for the rest of July / August because, quite frankly, there is nothing that I "need" and I seriously need to be more aware of how I spend my money, since there are other things I need to accomplish, savings-wise (travel, etc.). It adds up to a staggering amount! Eee. That said, I have to commit to a no-buy period, and to "shop my own stash" and I am saying it here to hold myself accountable.

This is going to be difficult with all of the fall collections coming out...but we can do it, right?

: )

Re: No-buy

Well since I missed the Shu Uemura promotion for the free portable eye liner brush, no need to grab anything there.  Drat though cause I love that brush but there is no way to buy it in the US anymore.  And the selection of their new campaign is disappointing in comparison to their other global sites (already out of stock and I feel bad for anyone looking at pink shades of blush).  Temptation adverted.  I have a feeling that I will not see any good promotions around my birthday.  Smiley Indifferent  (the regional product block wall is to my no buy advantage)

I thought about the Guerlain palette but then I decided since it was not limited edition that I could wait around fall when those will be nice colors to wear (and when I have saved properly).  At this point, I can wait for fall.  Trying to enjoy the rest of summer and perhaps something fun within the next month or two.  I've also been meaning to donate some clothes and items because some of it I just dread or do not feel like wearing anymore.

At this point, it's mostly refilling things when they run out.  And I am looking more for a nice colorful lightweight scarf.  No luck yet.  Otherwise, no buy for me as well.

Re: No-buy

So this weekend I went through my swap and TSB cupboard to get rid of some extra packing materials and to neaten up. O. M.G. When I saw HOW MANY padded mailers and boxes I had under there I decided it was time to jump on the no buy bandwagon. I actually DELETED the UD friends and family sale email TWICE!!! It's like they have to send it again if they notice you didn't shop to make SURE you go shopping!!! Those of you that know how much I love UD know what a challenge that was. Eventhough I don't 'need" anything, I know I would have easily found things to buy in the site ESPECIALLY with 25% off on top of it!!!!

I am deleting many emails "site" unseen now so that I don't end up  on Hoarders with katie!!!! LOL!

Re: No-buy

@lovely1reigns: You're absolutely right -- I think that is exactly what I need to do! Half the time I find things that I rediscover (and that subsequently get put back into rotation).

Lol, that's a good one to add! I definitely gravitate back to the same palettes.

Re: No-buy

@tiffanybt: I think if I worked for Sephora, I would end up on Hoarders. No, seriously. I don't know how you do it!

Re: No-buy

@katie-  Yep, I totally agree with you about working at Sephora!  I would love to be able to try out all the new products and be able to help people create different looks or improve their makeup technique, but Sephora would never have to pay me a paycheck.  I would just spend it all right there on payday!  Plus I would have to build an addition onto the house, I can barely fit all my makeup in my closet, even with swapping on MUA and doing a periodic tidy up/throw out.

Though if I got an addition built, maybe tenngal could come up and visit me and katimae and help us organize. If she had 2 stops to make, it might be worth the drive!

Re: No-buy

I'm totally on board with this. You're right, the thing to do is not open emails from stores. When I'm really trying to limit myself, I just quickly delete them without letting myself read them and it helps a lot.

I've often thought how much fun it would be to have a part-time job at Sephora! The rule would be, I could only spend the amount I earned there, so if I wanted more stuff I'd have to work more hours. Wouldn't that be great? It would finance all my beauty purchases. The problem is, like prettyinpa, I have no more room for stuff. If it gets to the point where I have to box things up and put them in the attic, then it's time to stop buying!!!!!

Re: No-buy

I just found and read through this thread.  I am definitely going to have to go on a NO-BUY for the month of August.  I've already blown it too bad to start in July cause of all the darn sales going on and I can't pass up a bargain (even when I can't afford it).  So my June and July spending is one of the reasons I need to stop buying, plus we are going on vacation in August so I don't need to be spending money on things that I don't need cause vacations end up being so expensive anyway.  Right now I don't NEED anything (except I may have to break my no-buy rule whenever the UD Anniversary Eyeshadow Collection comes to Sephora, ha ha!).  Seriously, kalex, I understand the need to cut way back and I'm really going to give the no-buy a try in August.  I have been lazy about shopping my own stash and need to start doing that again anyway.
Smiley Happy

@prettyinpa:  I'm with you about working at Sephora!  I'd love to work there helping people choose makeup/skincare and doing makeovers and I'd be happy to do it for free, but then I couldn't buy all the makeup I'd want to buy as it came in stock so I'd need a paycheck afterall, ha ha.  If we both worked at Sephora, I could come help you organize your new makeup-room addition right after I got through building a makeup room onto my house, ha ha.

Tiff you are so right! I am going to go through my containers and see what's old is new again and what I forgot about! lol

Re: No-buy

@tenngal, did you try the Boscia No  Pores No Shine treatment yet? I was interested to hear that you bought it; I've been wondering if it's any good.

I'm doing very well with my no-buy. I was able to resist sale items at Urban Decay, the sale at Tarte, and I'm deleting emails from beauty.com without reading them so I can't be tempted. Before I started the no-buy, I got 4 orders from Sephora in a very short time period so there's nothing I could possibly need.

Re: No-buy

@daisy346:  Way to go on sticking to the No-Buy!  I've been doing the same thing as far as deleting e-mails from Urban Decay, Ulta, etc., so I won't even be tempted.  You asked about the Boscia No Pores No Shine Treatment and I wanted to let you know that I've only been using it for about 5 or 6 consecutive days so far.  As far as "immediate" results (upon application), I can't really see that it reduces the size of my pores but I do think that it may help a little with keeping oiliness at bay.  Since I've only been using it for such a short amount of time, I don't know what the long-term effect will be.  However, I'm going to keep using it in hopes that over time it will reduce pore size like it promises.  It does have a nice cooling sensation on my skin when I first apply it.

@prettyinpa:  I've been deleting all of my e-mails from all beauty sites, including MAC, or I'm sure I'd be wanting the set you're wanting right now, too, ha ha.  Just use that willpower I know you've got and say no to the eyeshadow!

Re: No-buy

@tenngal-  I have been deleting the emails from beauty sites. A so called friend (maybe I should classify her as FrienemySmiley Mad) told me about this one because I have been complaining that I wish UD would make a grey NAKED palette. I don't think I can persuade her to give this to me for Labor Day, either.Smiley Sad

However, I may have a plan- maybe I can ask for this for Christmas and just have it put aside until then. Of course, then I would have to wait 3 additional months than if I just took a chance and waited to get it in October, now I am in a tizz.

Re: No-buy

@prettyinpa: HAHAHHAH, I came by this thread to re-commit to my no-buy, only to discover that there is now a grey eyeshadow palette? I LOVE GREYS...WANT! Is it expensive? I must google this immediately...

...errr...google it and put it on my wish list, I mean...not my "go out immediately and buy" list...a list that does not exist anymore (kind of). Must not cave!

Lately, it's been sobering (and helpful) to think of the money I spend in terms of what else I could be doing with it. $100 at Sephora might not seem like a lot at the time, but really, that's 1/3 of a plane ticket I should be buying to go see family / friends across the country.

Re: No-buy

@katie- So far I have been resisting, but it is oh-so-tempting.

The palette is from the MAC Me Over Collection and called Lady Grey and consists of cool light taupe mauve (matte), muted silver lilac (frost), light green grey (satin) and mid tone grey (velux pearl), $38. Plus there is a new Fluidline in charcoal with gold that I would love for fall. I haven't bought from MAC in ages since their recent collections haven't been that fascinating to me. But this one....

Ooh, Hubby just said he would buy it for me since I was so brave at the dermatologist today (it was pretty much nothing, but sounds scary) and because I have been whinging around the house about this palette and being on no-buy. Yipee!!!! He doesn't get why I am on a makeup diet because he figures I already have a ton of makeup, what's one more palette, and they haven't cascaded on him recently anyways, so what? I can wait on the Fluidline, they tend to be in stock for awhile anyways.

Meantime, I am not opening any more emails from the Frienemy that sent me a picture of this palette, she is on the delete list like an ad from beauty companies!

Re: No-buy

This time not only am I "No-Buying," but I'm actually returning a former buy.  It's that darned Urban Decay Eyelash Curler that I had all the problems with and I've given it all the tries and failures that I'm willing to put up with.  So this time it's going back to the store and I'm not trying a replacement.  I thought the last one Sephora sent me was going to work OK.  Even though the top and bottom metal pieces didn't align perfectly straight on this one (as on one of the previous ones I tried), they aligned well enough that they would squeeze together and curl my lashes.  The only problem was (and it's a big one) is that after the third or fourth squeeze the pad would pop out.  I'd have to stop, insert the pad again and finish my lashes.  The pad always popped out whenever I "pumped" it to give my lashes that extra bit of curl, too.  I tried a different pad thinking maybe that pad was defective, but that didn't help.  I give up!!!  I love the whole concept of the opened-ended eyelash curler, but this one obviously needs to go back to the drawing board and be better constructed.  So anyway, I am not only "No-Buying" but returning.  I've been sticking to my "No Buy" commitment for a month now!!!

Re: No-buy

While my no-buy thing for make-up is going great, I'm now having another obsession: horse wear!!!!! I even got cowboy boots, even if I once swear I would never get some!!!!!!(At least, they're for the barn, not to wear to work or any place else!) I really think I'm a compulsive buyer, and I need help!!!!

Re: No-buy

ohhenri-  Yep, those horse wear things can just add up!  I am learning to drive (horses) now, so fortunately I don't have to buy any new outfits for that, and my instructor has all the tack and cart so I'm only in for lessons.

Oh well, at least you are probably past outgrowing all your horse wear a couple of times a year- I had that problem when I was a teen and it got seriously expensive.

Re: No-buy

@ohhenri:  I know exactly how you feel!!!  I am doing great about not buying makeup (except I did buy 3 new Sephora Waterproof Lip Liners the other day, but I really needed to replace my stubby, short, overly-sharpened ones Smiley Wink).  However, I have gone on a Coach handbag and accessory buying spree.  I don't need a new purse at all!!!  I have been on Coach's official website every day checking for new styles and I've ordered 5 handbags recently.  We went to visit family a couple of hours away and there was a Coach store in the mall there and I bought a Coach key chain, a pony scarf and a universal case.  I think I'm a compulsive buyer, too, so don't feel alone.  I have told myself no more spending period until after Christmas!  I am not going to get on Coach's website today and try to break the cycle.

Re: No-buy

Try putting yourself on a beauty budget of, say, $20 for the month. You can still look at beauty magazines and emails and blogs. But, instead of getting the expensive items they recommend, try out some drugstore brands copies of them, like Cover Girl or Maybelline. If you really want a no-spending month, just delete all the emails from expensive stores and you can still read the mags and blogs. Circle things you might want, and type up a list with prices. Add it all up. It will probably be a lot. Then, get rid of as much stuff as you can. Your goal is to have two or less items that are not too overpriced. Tell yourself, "I will wait until a sale to get these." Sephora does have some big sales every so often.

But, I'd recommend taking this month and sampling some products from ELF. eyeslipsface (dot) com. I always recommend them to people on a budget, as they have 1-5 dollar makeup that is still decent quality. Of course, not as good as an UD shadow, but for a dollar I have actually heard people compare the two and say they are similar. I like their cream eyeliner and studio eyeshadows, along with their one dollar brightening eye color quads. Check it out!! BTW, I'm not being paid or sponsored by them. I do really love their products haha Smiley Very Happy Hope I helped!

Re: No-buy

I got laid off at work two weeks ago, so I'm trying to stick to a no-buy policy. But, tonight I had to break down and order my Boscia face wash and toner. I've been drooling over all the goodies I want on here, and going through withdrawals since I used to shop at Sephora at LEAST twice a month. It's really hard to stay committed, but I'm definitely not buying ANYTHING unless I need it/have run out of it... sigh!!!

Hope you find something soon...I know how you feel!
