I realize a lot of us are in the same boat, being addicted to makeup and beauty products and desperately trying to control stashes that are bursting from train cases, drawers and cabinets. We have the Traveling Sephora Box ("TSB") to swap products with one another and temper some of the addiction cravings to go out and get new stuff. I have another idea to assist with resisting the temptation to continually buy new things.
I propose that for an entire week, we shop our own stash and dig up things that we haven't touched for a long time. Whatever you've accrued the most of, each day put on something different, whether it's eye shadow or blush or lipstick. Then report back here and post what you wore each day!
I'm going to wear a different eye shadow, lippie, and blush each day. I have so many of all three categories but always find myself reaching for the same colours. It's time to branch out!
For example, tomorrow I'm going to wear:
- Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge in "Pale Pink" for blush
- Dior Lip Glow
- Stila Eye Shadow in "Chill"
I haven't touched all three of those in weeks and months.
this is a great idea! what i have done in the past which i actually just finished doing was using a different primer, foundation, blush, bronzer etc everyday. put it away and then use another different one each day. at night when i cleaned my face id set out the next items so i didn't need to think or grab etc, it was already on my vanity for me. after finishing that up (and hunny it took LONG TIME, I'm still not done with my lip collection and its been MONTHS) now i am using the same foundation, bronzer, blush etc everything for a whole week. Ill use the same product for a whole week and then put it away and take everything out for another week on Sunday. By the time friday comes trust me I'm usually over my foundation, blush and highlight laugh out loud. just some food for thought, it really helps me with my tiny OCD and i feel good getting actual use out of the products i pay for ya know. hope that helps!
Well, I took your advice and went thru my stash. Found out that UD Naked palette that I fought for months to get-- haven't even used it. Love all the colors in it and would totally wear them, but I'm so scared of using up the palette 😞 So, I'm going to try to wear a different shade from there for each of the next 12 days.
Your post also gave me an idea to go through all my stuff and look at what gets most used. I found out I've got some stuff on their deathbeds, so I made a deal with myself that they have to be used up before they can be replaced. Also, I took a permanent marker, and wrote numbers on each of my chapsticks, numbering which ones to use first, then going through them all before getting another one.
Thanks for the great idea!
@emiliea: Good for you! I found that when going through my stash I came up with all kinds of things that I had forgotten that I had. If the colors in the Naked Palette look great on you then I'd go ahead and use it up. No point in saving is because it's just going to get old and crumble up one day. So I say "use it while it's fresh and new". I love your numbering your chapstick idea, too! 🙂
I'm excited! I just ordered a Bobbi Brown Bronzer, but thought I'd shop my stash to see if I could find a bronzer to use until the BB bronzer arrives and I found a Smashbox Fusion Soft Lights that I'd forgotten I had. I also found an Urban Decay Blush in Fetish, a Smashbox Blush in Charmed and a MUFE blush and a Sephora blush that I didn't have a clue that I had. I really need to go through my makeup bins. I normally use Smashbox Soft Lights in the pinkish color, so finding the Fusion Soft Lights in the brownish tones was a great find! I feel like I just went shopping! 🙂
@tenngal - Glad to hear it! 🙂 I went through the stash this week and looked for my bronzers, too, because while I'm not super pale, I am the palest I have ever been at this time of the year after winter is over and before the temperatures start to rise. I was out somewhere a few days ago, caught my face in a mirror, and thought I looked sooo pasty and weird. I'm not a heavy bronzer user and prefer to go without it sometimes, but something about this week makes me need it more. Maybe it's all the rain and feeling generally washed out as well.
@officegal: Unfortunately the Smashbox Fusion Soft Lights was the wrong shade for me so I guess that's why it was in my stash in the first place, ha ha. So I just *had* to get a new bronzer to take its place, no question about it, right? (ha ha) So I got another shade of Bobbi Brown Bronzing Powder that's a good color for my skin tone right now while I'm lily white. The Smashbox bronzer went back in my stash...
Well, OF COURSE you had to go out and get a new proper one! I'd expect nothing less from my tenngal! 😉
I'm dying to get the new Dior limited edition bronzers (not at Sephora but at dept stores) but I don't think I use enough bronzer to justify the purchase. I'm currently using a lovely Clarins that was a part of their last year's limited ed collection. (Plus I have four other bronzers that are perfectly fine and not being used... :))
I actually used a tinted moisturizer that I hadn't used in quite a while. Was still practically brand-new! Clinique Moisture Sheer Tint in Fair. It looked so good on with the lip gloss in Juicy Apple that I just used Virgin and Sin from the Naked palette and then Clinique High Lengths Mascara for a no-makeup look today. Honestly, I probably could have gotten away with no TM today...my skin looked THAT good. I'm thinking the Caudalie Premier Cru for Eyes is definitely making a difference on the skin around my eyes too, along with the Origins "A Perfect World" serum I forgot I had.
@waterbaby1981: Have you been using the Premier Cru for a while? I was so eager to try it, and when I did, it didn't do anything for me. I probably didn't give it enough time!
I've only been using it for a few weeks and definitely noticed that it plumps up those fine lines I'm starting to get around my eyes (I'm 29), but it's also really making my dark circles practically non-existent. I really only need to use brightener on my eyes lately instead of that plus concealer, even with the lack of sleep I've been getting lately. I mentioned last night to my husband last night that it is working on the skin around my eyes so it's worth it to me to bite the bullet and pay the $95. Not worth it if it *doesn't* work, obviously. For my skin though, it does what it says it does. Not sure if it's working because it's in combination with the serum I put on my skin first after cleansing and the retinoid, but it does work for me.
I think you just have to give it a little time. But I've definitely noticed that my eye area is brighter and looks more awake lately.
@waterbaby1981: Now I'm definitely wanting to try the Caudalie Premier Cru for eyes after reading you and katie writing about it. I don't have dark circles, but I would definitely like to try it for the plumping fine lines part, ha ha! I'm putting it on my Sephora list to remind myself to get a sample the next time I'm at Sephora. I keep a list going because I only get to actually go in person to Sephora every month or two since it's about 2-1/2 hours from where I live. 🙂
@tenngal: Definitely get a sample first. That's what I did and tried it out first. I tend to use the Clinique All About Eyes serum in the morning and then smooth some of the Premier Cru on, and it works for me fantastic. You really don't need a lot of the eye cream, either. Just be careful if you buy it when you pump it out! When I did the first time, WAY too much came out, so I put the remaining amount in the sample container I had for the Premier Cru and used that and then was much more careful. You barely need to pump it to get some. Let me know if it works for you.
I LOVE Premiere Cru! I got a deluxe sample a while back and I think it's awesome. If only Caudalie was a *little* less expensive...... 😞
Oh well, 'll just have to save up! 🙂
mermadelove---I havent used the Caudalie Premier Cru eye cream but I have used the $150 Face cream/eye cream/serum all in one and I was really disappointed. I loved it while I was using a sample but when I got it home I didnt like it at all. It broke me out, you need many pumps to cover whole face and it didnt help with acne marks at all like it claimed it would improve. And I hated the packaging--it comes in this gold pump bottle thats not see through so you dont know how much product you have left and you cant use up every last bit ( pump bottles cheat you out of the product) and you cant cut it open like a tube. I think its my biggest disappointment out of Sephora. My mom has also used it but she was using it for anti aging or age correction and it showed no results for her as well.
I see no difference between this and the $35 Caudalie Premier Vendanges. They both moisturize the same, break me out and produce no visible results.

I have only used the eye cream and the beauty elixir. One was free and the beauty elixier I got in the travel size, so it was only $16. I do find their stuff prohibitively expensive. Now that I've heard your story, I think /i'll stick to the travel sized beauty elixir and keep using my korres and Juice Beauty products since they are inexpensive ( comparatively speaking) and they work for me!
I haven't had much time lately to devote to shopping my stash, but the other day my mom needed an anti-aging moisturizer with SPF so I dug into my stash of samples, etc., to see what I could find for her. It was no problem with coming up with a stack of samples for her, ha ha, but I did find a deluxe sample of LORAC Tantalizer that I'd forgotten I had. I hadn't tried it since it first came on the market and couldn't remember if I liked it or not, so I gave it a try. I actually split the sample with my mom and she feel in love with it and had me get her the full-sized bottle so her legs can look tan when we go on vacation next month. I liked it pretty well as far as looks go, but it never seemed to actually dry completely. I laid a couple of paper towels across the edge of my car seat to protect it and it's a good thing I did because the Tantalizer rubbed off onto the paper towels. It also rubbed off onto the edges of my capri's and the underside of my shoes, too. Before I went to bed I washed it off my legs so I wouldn't end up with brown sheets. However, it doesn't stain clothing permanently. It does wash out, but you certainly don't want to wear white while wearing the Tantalizer. I don't mind if it rubs off on my denim capri's and the underside of my shoes, but my car seat is a different story. I'm planning to use it while on vacation to give my Fusion Beauty Self Tanner a little boost of color, but other than that I don't think I'll use it because of the mess. Have any of you had the same experience with it transferring onto everything? I was just wondering if maybe I did something wrong or if there is some kind of trick to make it stay on and not rub off until it's washed off.
🙂
Ooh, tenngal, gee that's such a bummer! I had the same problem with the Murad Firm and Bronzer! I put it on and rushed out of the house because I was running late and didn't check that the color wouldn't transfer. It got on my fabric car seats, straps of sandals and edge of shorts! The color didn't come out of the leather sandal straps, did wash out of the shorts and did come out of the fabric car seats but I had to take it to a detailing shop because I was afraid to clean the seats myself. Expensive lesson: don't try any new product with color in it except at home, thank goodness I don't have leather car seats!
Also, thanks for warning us about the Tantalizer, I got a packet of the stuff in a swap, but I think I'm going to toss it, I don't want a repeat episode with the car seats.
@prettyinpa: Sorry to hear about your bad experience! You may want to consider trying the Tantalizer just on your legs when you can be prepared to put a towel or a paper towel over the edge of your car seat because it really does go on smooth and the color is very pretty. I plan to use it on vacation and for special events only so you may want to consider not tossing what you have and saving it for special occasions like me. Just an idea. However, after the horror you went through with the Murad product I would totally understand your reasoning for throwing the Tantalizer away!
🙂
I found a deluxe sample of Benefit Benetint and I wore it today under my Rosebud Salve in Mint ( its quite drying). I love the way it looks when I just dab on a little, any more than that I look like I have blood on my face! Overall though, LOVE:D
I ran out of my favorite staple moisturizer, Caudalie Quenching Sorbet Crème -- but I had already spent way more than I should have on products lately. Luckily, I discovered an unused, unexpired bottle of La Roche-Posay Hydréane Légère, which used to be one of my favorites (and is still -- but since I found Caudalie, I've been using that). I have to say, it works just as well, and I'm happy I didn't have to spend anything at all!
Re: Caudalie, though -- I was so excited to try the Premier Cru Eye Cream, but it didn't work for me at all! My issue with my under eye area is hydration -- and this didn't do it for me at all. Perhaps it's good longer-term for puffiness, shadows, etc., but I couldn't stick with it since it wasn't moisturizing and left my eye area really dry. I normally love Caudalie, though, and highly recommend the line in general.
