Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

Thanks MiaBT for starting and updating this list. It's a start. There are so many organizations that have cruelty free lists like PETA, Leaping Bunny, Paula's Choice, Phyrra beauty blog and My Beauty Bunny to name a few. All have inconsistent information as the beauty world is so big and ever changing. Some brands are listed as cruelty free on PETA, but not on Leaping Bunny for instance and vice versa for example.

Even though this is a heated topic (and it should be) I think it's important that consumers make an informed decision. Not sure if you can add this information to your next update, but if you could include whether or not these products are sold in foreign markets like China that would be helpful.

Thanks!

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

Thank you sooo much for posting the list. It's been difficult to find an recent accurate list of cruelty free sephora products. Now I know which brands to go for and ones that I will mostly avoid.

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

4everacting, I have found this list which is a vegan list but it ALSO shows the parent company for a brand WHEN that parent company tests on animals. This list is also frequently updated! Smiley Happy

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

I contacted Sephora just a couple of days ago about their brand of products and if they tested on animals.  I was told that they do not and that they fight animal testing.  When I asked about their policy if a country requires animal testing, they admitted that they do test if it is required.  This to me is a cop out.  Be sure to ask this question when you are contacting any company about their animal testing policies.  One animal being tested on for beauty is one too many.  Also, their list of companies who do not test is flawed.  Check out the cruelty cutter app by the beagle freedom project for a more accurate list.  It's the best I've found so far.  For those of us in canada, crueltyfreeincanada.ca is very helpful.

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

Many of these brands are owned by a parent company who DOES test on animals...keep that in mind. Like tarte who is owned by Kose who sells in china.....or smashbox owned by estee lauder (who owns like 25 other brands many of which you may have been deceived to believe are cruelty free which are not in my opinion when owned by a company who does).....or urban decay & nyx both owned by L'Oreal. You MUST do your own research....

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

Dear, DEAR! Mia and rest of the Mods,

Thank you so very much for all this investigating. I can't even imagine how much time and effort it all involved. Just for an example, I had NO, NONE, ZERO idea that Estee's hand reached out to so many companies, cruelty-free - or NOT! Talk about gilding the lily! That company brings in kabillions of dollars and I bet many of their customers have NO idea how many other customers they've fooled because the customers who've purchased a brand they believe to be cruelty-free actually is, but it's owned by good ol' Estee who doesn't give a hoot and a holler about cruelty or not in so many other of "her" brands! Deceit at its purest, I say.

Anyway, thank you - I've learned a lot and appreciate the source, who I "trust". And in the cosmetic industry in the U.S., that's hard to come by.

With enduring appreciation -

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

Most of these company are owned by companies they do test on animals. Try also sell to china. Dog deeper and you'll find companies use loop holes to deny animals testing, when in fact they do test.

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

Wow, a billion typos....! You get the point though!

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

Regardless, if they live or die and how testing is performed, these animals live very sad and lonely lives locked in cages.

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

You guys should check out LaRitzy (www.laritzy.com). It's a cruelty free beauty box and they only send non toxic products. I've discovered so many new products and brands that I didn't know about, it's great.

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

Thanks for the post. This sounds interesting.

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

This is awesome info. Just yesterday I was trying to decide on a beauty box but gave up bc non were cruelty free. Thank you!!

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

How can you claim that Sephora private label products are "cruelty free" and "have never been tested on animals"?

That is a flat out lie!  Your products are sold in China!  Where the law mandates animal testing!

If you want to sell in China, fine, but at least have the integrity to be honest your products.

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

**sigh** Ok, lets go over this again....China only mandates testing on imported finished cosmetics that contain ingredients or combinations or from sources they have not verified as safe. Also products made in China is not subject to testing. That is how a cosmetics company can sell in China and be cruelty free.

I wish everyone would stop using the "they sell in China" argument. Remember - the same companies that "sell in China" also sell in Europe which has a very strict ban against animal testing at any and every level.

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

I feel like people seriously need to research before they accuse companies of lying. It's sad that some groups leave out important information that can cause brands to receive backlash even though they never tested on animals.

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

SEPHORA is NOT CRUELTY FREE..ANYTHING MADE IN CHINA IS tested on animals!

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

no, many products are made in china but are cruelty free. How you may ask? because it is ONLY PRODUCED THERE.

However, if they were SOLD ON THE MARKET/MALLS/SHOPS like mac and Sephora are.. They would not be cruelty free.

The reason being that animal testing for finished products is only mandatory if you plan on SELLING your items IN THE CHINESE market. If you do not, you are cruelty free.

It should be noted that if someone in china ordered makeup from outside china, that makeup would not go into the law of testing on animals.. Because it's still not sold in the market.

Another note: if the makeup is sold in hong kong but not in china, they ARE cruelty free, as Hong kong has no law that makes animal testing mandatory whatsoever!

Hope that cleared it for everyone!

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

Sigh? Im sorry, are we bothering you with our concerns?

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

Tirah, for people who take animal welfare seriously, this issue is important.  Cosmetics are a luxury item. There are many, many of us who made the choice years ago (in my case 25 years ago) not to use products from companies that condone the painful treatment of animals.  I am not going to change that now just because so many lines I used to enjoy, many of whom built their reputation on being progressive and animal-friendly (e.g. Origins, MAC, etc), decided that financial opportunity was worth tossing their principles.  Profit margins in cosmetics are huge.  They do not need to expand into China; I don't need their cosmetics.

On top of that, if you don't care about animal welfare, maybe you care about human welfare.  China has allegedly been harvesting organs from Falun Gong political prisoners for years.  David Kilgour, a Canadian MP, co-authored a report on it.  It is horrifying.  I would not trust the Chinese government on animal welfare issues if they can be that brutal to humans.
