Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

I just spent two hours in my local store trying to chose animal friendly products.  I was educating the employees.  Just because a brand looks cruelty free doesn't mean it is.  Look at the brand they are owned by.  I keep the 'peta cruelty free' list on my phone and refer to that.

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

This list is not accurate.  For example, Clarins does test on animals.

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

Hi all,

So I've been reading that the Chinese Food and Drug Administration has proposed the requirement for animal testing of domestically manufactured ordinary products be abolished by June of 2014, which includes shampoos, perfumes, and skincare. Still not pertaining to ALL cosmetics. But they have also proposed that the cosmetic industry now have options similar to those in the Cosmetic Product safety Report of the EU Cosmetic Regulations which allows companies to use the toxicological profile of the ingredients in their products to assess the safety of their cosmetics for human use. Just this past March the EU passed regulations that ban animal testing of cosmetics sold n their countries. China does have a way to go til they get to that point, but at least now all those companies that had to choose between compromising their stance on animal cruelty and selling in China will be able to enter that lucrative market. All those petitions signed are beginning to pay off. Only two years ago we began to really demand the country change its policies and here we are.

Although, I do need to point out that by now we would have been much farther than just being thrown a bone if more companies would take a firm stand against China's cruel practices and boycott the country. However, the bottom line is more important for many companies than the poor bunny that's suffering needlessly. After all, medical science has proven that animal testing does not actually tell us anything about the safety of a substance for human use. Furthermore, science has a variety of advanced technologies alternate to animal testing that are far more accurate. It's time we end these barbaric practices. We can do our part to force the evolution of countries like China by boycotting companies that show us their bottom line is more important than endangering innocent animal lives.

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

I personally contacted Laura Mercier Company to ask if they are cruelty free. I have realized that many companies state that they do not test their product on animals, but they may be hiding the fact that they test their ingredients on animals and or sell their products to China so I decided to contact them myself. I have recently switched all my household items, and beauty items as well as toothpaste, etc to cruelty free ONLY.

Laura Mercier emailed me back with this statement, "Hello, Laura Mercier is committed to the elimination of animal testing. We are equally committed to consumer health and safety, and bringing to market products that comely with applicable regulations in every country in which our products are sold. We do not conduct animal testing on our products or ingredients, nor ask others to test on our behalf. We evaluate our finished products in clinical tests on volunteer panels. We do not sell our products in China."

I was so happy and relieved to hear this considering Laura Mercier is one of my favorite brands for face products and is one of the only ones that doesn't break me out. Has anyone else contacted them and gotten the same response? I contacted them April 3rd, 2014 so this is very recent. I just want to make sure I am reading this information correctly and that Laura Mercier is a good brand to buy!! As far as I am concerned it is! No ingredients and no China WOOHOOO!

Also, does anyone know of any perfumes sold at Sephora or Nordstrom that are cruelty free? I love my Chanel, but they sell in China Smiley Sad

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

I was looking into Laura Mercier's policy (for 2017) and their current statement is kind of shady... they say something about complying with "applicable regulations" in the countries where they sell. So I wouldn't feel comfortable buying their stuff.

For perfume/fragrance, I've found Cruelty-Free Kitty's fragrance page to be pretty helpful. Unfortunately, tons of companies do test but there are some out there that still don't.

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

I wonder if this is just semantics though. I'm nervous about the "We do not sell our products in China." line. I'm just cautious because I recently heard that they WOULD be selling in China so while they don't TODAY, they may be selling by the summer, you know? I wish they had said something like, "We do not sell our products in China, and have no plans to do so for the foreseeable future while current regulations remains intact." I'd feel a lot easier about buying from them. I just feel like they've been dodgy about people asking them the China question.

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

Hi there VirtuallyVegan! I see that you're new here - we've discussed several times around here that this thread is out of date and inaccurate. Smiley Happy Just so you know, links to non-Sephora websites will be removed by the moderators, especially ones that are self-promotional.

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

Thank you for letting me know that UD belongs to Loreal!!! I had no idea!!! Could anyone suggest a good spf and cruelty free foundation? Thanks!!!

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

Are you dry, combination, or oily skin? Also, are you looking for light, medium or full coverage?

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

Is it true MAC test on animals ? T_T

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

MAC used to be cruelty free but has since changed its stance. Money is more important than animals to them. THey have since introduced themselves to the Chinese market, where it is required by law for cosmetics, among other things, to be tested on animals.

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

I have to give recognition to those who truly research their products before purchase! It makes me happy to know they there are, in fact, people out there with a strong moral compass willing to make sacrifices (even small ones) to make a difference in the way animals are treated. GO YOU!

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

I think that while there may be some things, like life-saving measures, that "need" to be tested on animals, things like makeup and fragrances do not.  Many stolen dogs or unwanted strays are sold to labs. we don't need to treat  animals in an inhumane way for the sake of our "stuff". There are ways now to test things without live animals. ANd don't get me started on where animal by-products in our cosmetics come is awful.  I should be better about the things I purchase, so it isn't like I am some soapbox vegan who never, ever purchases anything tested on or made from animal products. I am trying to improve. I checked out the ACURE website, they have great face, hair and body products that are very reasonably priced. I think every little thing hellps the environment, but the sad reality is we will never get rid of these practices, no matter who complains or what we don't buy.

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

I used to work in a lab where we tested on animals, for medical purposes. There is a time and place for it. We used mice and they were all treated well and euthanized very humanely. I realize that some people advocate that no euthanasia is humane, but there are certainly forms that are far less humane than others. You cannot always initially test on people. A few years ago there was a drug being developed that resulted in patients in phase 1 trials ending up causing Guillian Barre, a temporary ascending paralysis that is usually reversible but can have permanent damage. I would rather we figure that out on rats than people. Phase 1 testing typically is figuring out what the upper limits are. the results sometimes have effects we could not predict, but I would rather test and euthanize a rat than have to tell a family that this drug had huge, unanticipated negative effects. Animal testing allows us to figure out a lot of potential negative effects before we use it on people.

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

All those animals that are being tested on would never even be alive if not for that reason. Just like cows, some are bred just for one purpose which is testing.

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

This list is just wrong wrong wrong and I find it frustrating that Sephora is spreading false information.

If you are asking brands if "they" test their products on animals, they can say no if they test the ingredients or unfinished products. Or if they hire a third party to test. Or buy from a third party. Or sell in China.

Stila and Smashbox are listed on that list and both test by law and have not been removed from PETA's super unreliable list. There are other brands on that list selling in China as well.

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

Thank you!! I was insulted when Sephora sent me this link as a response to my suggestion that they create a cruelty-free search function.

I love shopping at Sephora but I'm really disappointed by how inaccurate this list is.

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

Most of these are tested on animals - due to the China sales.

SEPHORA brand DOES test on animals - you sold to China!

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

For those interested in learning about medical testing, alternatives and reasons why medical animals models can be unhelpful (aspirin kills cats and dogs, not people) and that a majority of medications that pass animal trials fail human trials, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine is a great resource. You can google it to find more!

Kudos to those trying to become more informed! I know I'm trying to limited my purchases to cruelty free companies, and each cruelty free purchase is a step in the right direction! If anyone knows of a great cruelty free fragrance company, I'd love to hear it, that seems to be a hard cruelty free product to find.

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

Aspirin can be given to dogs, the dose is different - and too much can just as easily kill a person. veterinarians typically recommend baby aspirin for dogs with arthritis Smiley Happy

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

I have been researching cruelty free fragrance companies for a while now!  Child Perfume is not tested on animals, and neither is The Pink Room, Diptyque, Profumum, and some other other niche fragrances sold at Luckyscent.  You can message me for a more extensive list on my findings.  I'm a perfume addict!
