2019 - THE NO-BUY, LOW-BUY, BUDGET-BUY ACCOUNTABILITY AND SUPPORT THREAD

updated 11/25/18*

Hey all!  Welcome to Year 5 of the No/Low Buy thread 😲.

Since 2019 is LITERALLY around the corner so I figured it was time to get this thread started.  The 2018 thread can be located here: https://community.sephora.com/t5/Beauty-Confidential/2018-THE-NO-BUY-LOW-BUY-BUDGET-BUY-ACCOUNTABILI...

For reference here's the purpose of this thread (from lnum):

This thread is a support system for all of us who are trying to maintain a budget and keep our beauty spending limited. Post here when you have a weak moment, post here to hold yourself accountable, post here when you just need someone to talk to, post here when you have advice for all of us, and post here when you make mistakes but also make gains! Many of us post here to keep track of our monthly purchases. Anything you need to say, we are all here for each other. There's no judgement here.

Feel free to share your goals, items that tempt you, missteps (we don't believe in failures), and any successes.  Above all else, encourage and support one another.

My motto for this thread is that I strongly believe, even on a budget, you can have the things you want that make you happy without feeling like you're limiting yourself.

I am so excited to spend another year with you all. If it wasn't for the first two years of this thread, I would never have been able to cut down my beauty spending. My goal for this year is to maintain low spending on beauty, and cut down my clothing purchases. I will be funneling that money into traveling, which is what I have done in the past and it's a great goal that truly motivates me.

I'm still so proud of everyone for making it through 2015 and 2016, limiting ourselves in the beauty product area in order to improve our lives in other areas. We all did great and here's to another year of learning and saving!

Re: 2019 - THE NO-BUY, LOW-BUY, BUDGET-BUY ACCOUNTABILITY AND SUPPORT THREAD

I have only placed 2 makeup-related orders so far this year, both from budget brands: 1 colourpop order (about 111$) and one elf cosmetics order (~$65). This is more than I would have liked to have spent in the first month, but it is still significantly lower than last year where I was spending 400-800/month no cosmetics (ouch).

Things that help me stay focused include setting a year limit of $400 and thinking about savings goals. right now my spouse is unemployed so unfortunately my partial, disability income is what we are living on and that is barely enough to cover the bills, so I do regret my high spending on makeup last year.

Re: 2019 - THE NO-BUY, LOW-BUY, BUDGET-BUY ACCOUNTABILITY AND SUPPORT THREAD

January is off to a wonderful start. My only struggle was making my Sephora return - the Bite Beauty 4 lipstick holiday kit was on sale and seeing it look amazing on Jozkid I was tempted. Luckily there were none left but that was my only flirtation with messing up my goals.

Totals for January 2019:

   Makeup (no buy) - $0

   Skincare (low buy) - $11.70*

  • Dr. Teal's Epsom Salt - Soothe & Sleep - Lavender
  • Dr. Teal's Epsom Salt - Restore & Replenish - Pink Himalayan
  • Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Jelly

*$4.26 of it for the Clinique when I returned a Christmas gift and used my exchange

   Haircare (low buy/smart buy) - $0

Since my no buy started in November, here's my November/December tally:

Spoiler

   Makeup (no buy) - $0

   Skincare (low buy) - $67.35

  • CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser
  • CeraVe Moisturizing Cream
  • CeraVe PM (2 pack)
  • CeraVe Baby Lotion
  • Nivea Sunprotect Water Gel SPF 50 PA+++

   Haircare (low buy/smart buy) - $111.75

  • John Frieda Leave-In Conditioner Spray
  • John Frieda Curl Styling Spray
  • DevaCurl Wave Maker
  • DevaCurl Light Defining Gel
  • DevaCurl SuperCream
  • DevaCurl B'Leave-In

This is slightly updated from my post in the 2018 no buy, low buy thread to include a couple skincare items that I missed.

Totals for my year (November 2018-October 2019) to date:

   Makeup (no buy) - $0

   Skincare (low buy) - $79.05

Hope everyone else is staying on track too!

Re: 2019 - THE NO-BUY, LOW-BUY, BUDGET-BUY ACCOUNTABILITY AND SUPPORT THREAD

This is really good, @ShortErica!

Re: 2019 - THE NO-BUY, LOW-BUY, BUDGET-BUY ACCOUNTABILITY AND SUPPORT THREAD

Thank you @curlychiquita! I think trying to participate in panning and empties is a great distraction as well as being busy at work and browsing the internet less. Smiley Happy

Re: 2019 - THE NO-BUY, LOW-BUY, BUDGET-BUY ACCOUNTABILITY AND SUPPORT THREAD

Sounds like you are doing a great job so far @ShortErica! It's really interesting to see what niche people are more forgiving of themselves, and which areas we tend to rein in. This is such a good exercise for me!

Re: 2019 - THE NO-BUY, LOW-BUY, BUDGET-BUY ACCOUNTABILITY AND SUPPORT THREAD

We could create surveys for this topic too @eshoe and analyze the general trend. I agree that I love seeing everyone's rationale and how they handle their goals.

Re: 2019 - THE NO-BUY, LOW-BUY, BUDGET-BUY ACCOUNTABILITY AND SUPPORT THREAD

Hmmmm @ShortErica can you PM me a question to pose next week on the masking thread? If that’s what you are thinking about anyway, not sure...I see where you are going but need some direction, would love to include it!

Re: 2019 - THE NO-BUY, LOW-BUY, BUDGET-BUY ACCOUNTABILITY AND SUPPORT THREAD

@eshoe - it says I've hit my limit for private messages. I think I've only sent 1 today so I don't know why. I'll try again tomorrow. Ugh..frustrating!

Okay, nevermind - you should have a message now!

Re: 2019 - THE NO-BUY, LOW-BUY, BUDGET-BUY ACCOUNTABILITY AND SUPPORT THREAD

It used to do that for me a few days prior to leveling up, maybe it’s on the horizon @ShortErica 🤔

Re: 2019 - THE NO-BUY, LOW-BUY, BUDGET-BUY ACCOUNTABILITY AND SUPPORT THREAD

Strange but I'll keep a lookout @eshoe. I appreciate the insight.

Re: 2019 - THE NO-BUY, LOW-BUY, BUDGET-BUY ACCOUNTABILITY AND SUPPORT THREAD

@ShortErica You're killing it! And I'm right there with you on wanting to buy almost everything @jozkid models for us Smiley Very Happy

Re: 2019 - THE NO-BUY, LOW-BUY, BUDGET-BUY ACCOUNTABILITY AND SUPPORT THREAD

@tastelikewater you are too sweet!

Re: 2019 - THE NO-BUY, LOW-BUY, BUDGET-BUY ACCOUNTABILITY AND SUPPORT THREAD

Thanks @tastelikewater!

Re: 2019 - THE NO-BUY, LOW-BUY, BUDGET-BUY ACCOUNTABILITY AND SUPPORT THREAD

@ShortErica ok wow so impressive!!! I find it so interesting to see everyone break it down into categories. By far I spend the least on my hair products, but am a sucker for a sheet mask or two 😂 my low/no buy is total on all categories (including clothing, shoes, etc), but if I had to break down my 2019 to date it would be:

makeup (no buy): $14 (includes a brush I picked up at winners)

skincare (no/smart buy - love this term btw!): $12 no buy, $29 smart buy (includes a brush cleaner, not sure whether this is for skin or makeup?)

haircare (no/smart buy): $5 no buy, $5 smart buy

Re: 2019 - THE NO-BUY, LOW-BUY, BUDGET-BUY ACCOUNTABILITY AND SUPPORT THREAD

Thank you! You're doing wonderful with your 2019 spending. I'd love you thoughts @cianni - I've been thinking about some products and what category they belong in too. Maybe brush cleaner is in makeup but if you use brushes for masks then maybe skin care. Hmm..  Also, is makeup remover in makeup or skincare?

Re: 2019 - THE NO-BUY, LOW-BUY, BUDGET-BUY ACCOUNTABILITY AND SUPPORT THREAD

A cheap makeup brush cleanser that you probably already have @ShortErica  is either Dawn dishwashing or Baby Shampoos. I have used both of these in a pinch.

Re: 2019 - THE NO-BUY, LOW-BUY, BUDGET-BUY ACCOUNTABILITY AND SUPPORT THREAD

I don't think I will run out of brush cleaner but those are good options. Thanks @Loretta55. I really should wash my brushes more so then there is a chance I would need some but I'm just too busy or more likely lazy. 😂

Re: 2019 - THE NO-BUY, LOW-BUY, BUDGET-BUY ACCOUNTABILITY AND SUPPORT THREAD

@ShortErica thanks! I put brush cleaner and makeup remover as smart buy skincare, using the logic that a. It’s technically for my skins benefit (dirty brushes wreak havoc!), especially the makeup remover, and is part of my skincare routine. And b. I’m on essentially a no-buy for makeup, and I dont want to open the floodgates by creating a gray area, especially because I know I’ll need to keep buying remover throughout the year 😂.

Re: 2019 - THE NO-BUY, LOW-BUY, BUDGET-BUY ACCOUNTABILITY AND SUPPORT THREAD

Great reasoning @cianni and it makes it easier for me and my makeup no buy too!

Re: 2019 - THE NO-BUY, LOW-BUY, BUDGET-BUY ACCOUNTABILITY AND SUPPORT THREAD

For 2019, I am finally ready to join this low buy thread! 🎉
I didn’t purchase much makeup this month, which I feel quite happy about! I think a great deal of it can be attributed to the fact that I have a subscription bag (Ipsy $20) right now. Every time I get tempted to buy something, I think about how I’m already going to receive new makeup at my door and resist new purchases. The other makeup purchases I made were a Sephora order to redeem the 600 point Milk Makeup perk and a small order with UD direct for their glitter liner birthday gift redemption. My cosmetic purchases totaled $43.54 this month.

Overall, I’m happy with how my low buy is going, but I’m hoping to decrease it further to just my subscription expense. Maybe I will switch to different sub in the next few months tho. I have been using an expense app to input my expenses on the go so I can keep track of everything better. I find the instant tracking much more helpful than my excel spreadsheet I used to use haha (which was usually done after the fact)

Re: 2019 - THE NO-BUY, LOW-BUY, BUDGET-BUY ACCOUNTABILITY AND SUPPORT THREAD

@Guessgal I like that chart app! I agree real time is much more helpful than inputting to excel a couple times a week. It's great when there's good point perks that help us stick to our goals too.
