My Acne prone girlies, I need help!

Hi everyone!

I’m super new to using this for chatting purposes, but I really need your help!

For anyone that is acne prone or suffers from hormonal acne, can you please send your recommendations for really good sunscreen? Something lightweight that won’t clog my pores, but also doesn’t leave a white cast?

Let me know what you’ve used and what did or didn’t work for our skin type pls!

Thanks in advance xoxo Kami 💋

Re: My Acne prone girlies, I need help!

Try the innisfree sunscreens! Everything from this brand is super great to my acne-prone skin and they have great prices. I use their chemical clear sunscreen now because I am scared of a white cast and it is very light and glowy. I know they also have a acne-safe mineral sunscreen with a green tint to cancel out redness too that I have been wanting to try.

Hi!! Thank you so much, I will definitely look into this one 😊

Thanks for the tag, @danielledanielle!

Welcome to BIC, @KAMIECE! Is your skin dry, oily, combo, or balanced (not too dry or oily anywhere)? Hormonal acne can happen in all those scenarios, and some sunscreens might feel better on dry vs. oily skin.

My skin is mostly-dry combo: my oily zone is just on and around my nose. My skin’s also fairly sensitive, reactive/inflammation-prone, and going through perimenopausal hormonal acne, yaaaaaaaay. 😒 I can’t guarantee that any sunscreen won’t clog your pores—I mean, ideally none of ‘em should, but it really depends on how your particular skin reacts to various sunscreens. But I can recommend some lightweight sunscreens that leave no white cast:

  • SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Hyalu-Cica Water-Fit Sun Serum SPF50 PA++++ - a Korean sunscreen that might be hard to buy now (even from K-beauty retailers) if you’re in the US. It’s a lightweight chemical sunscreen that uses the updated UV filters we can’t get in American sunscreens. And since my skin’s mostly dry and reactive, this sunscreen’s a savior for me. If you can find it and get it shipped to you without paying a ridiculously high price, it’s worth trying a tube.

  • Supergoop! Protec(tint) Daily SPF Tint SPF 50 Sunscreen Skin Tint with Ectoin - a hybrid (zinc oxide + chemical UV filters) sunscreen that comes in a few different shades. 34C works pretty well for me, thought it leans toward the warm side of neutral. (I have a rosy undertone.) On my skin, this sunscreen doesn’t feel thick or greasy at all. But if you have a local store that carries it, try swatching a tester to see how it looks and feels on the back of your hand. You’ll probably wanna do that anyway to figure out which shade might work best for you.

  • Supergoop! Every. Single. Face. Watery Lotion SPF 50 Face Sunscreen 1.7 oz / 50 ml - a chemical sunscreen I’ve never tried, but a friend of mine with dry skin swears by. I assume it was created to be similar to Japanese “watery” sunscreens that are truly liquidy in texture. Those sunscreens usually feel very lightweight, as if you’re applying a watery serum. My friend says Supergoop’s doesn’t pill or leave a white cast on her medium-deep skin tone. And this reminds me to try it myself… I should add it to my Sephora Spring Saving Event shopping list.

One of my favorite reliable sunscreens, #Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen Invisible Broad Spectrum SPF 50 PA +++, was recently reformulated. I haven’t tried the new version yet (note to self). The old SPF 40 version feels good on my skin, but I know some folks didn’t like its silicone gel texture. I can’t recommend the new version to you in good faith because I haven’t tried it yet or spoken to anyone who has.

La Roche-Posay makes very good sunscreens, but many of them can feel heavy or greasy. Have you ever tried their Anthelios Ultra Light Fluid Face Sunscreen SPF 60? It comes in a little bottle you have to shake before using. That one’s also a watery formula and many people love it. And since the US version’s a chemical sunscreen, it should be 100% invisible on skin. I see it’s on sale at Ulta right now. 😉

Re: My Acne prone girlies, I need help!

Hi Wingless 🙂

Thanks for the welcome and for dropping in to give me these recommendations!

I believe I now have combo skin. I used to have oily pre-accutane. And now I believe it’s more in the middle, some drier sections and skerries oily around my nose area.

I have not tried supergoop yet but now that you and Danielle have suggested it I will be looking into it!

also, I used to use the La Roche-Posay Anthelios Ultra Light Fluid Face Sunscreen SPF 60 but, my skincare I feel conflicts with it sometimes depending on the condition of my skin at the time, what I used (if the night prior was a tret night) and maybe because it’s a chemical sunscreen. I was hoping for more of a mineral one, but I’m finding it hard because of the white cast issue.

Re: My Acne prone girlies, I need help!

@KAMIECE  Sorry for the late reply! FYI, if you “@“ the person you reply to, they’ll get a notification about your reply (a little red dot appears on the bell icon in the top right corner of each BIC page). Otherwise they might not know you replied. 🙂

Hmm, it’s hard to think of a good mineral (zinc oxide) sunscreen that doesn’t feel heavy/greasy or leave a very noticeable white cast, but does play nice with combo skin (no pilling or dry patch clinging). Aside from the Supergoop Protec(tint) I mentioned earlier, which is a hybrid mineral/chemical sunscreen, my favorite zinc oxide sunscreen’s probably still Native Unscented SPF 30. They make a facial version that’s nice, but I’ve also used the body version on my face with good results—and the body version comes in a bigger tube that costs less per ounce than the face version. It’s not 100% invisible on me, but the cast is very minimal.

To reduce zinc oxide (and/or Tinosorb) white cast, I always apply mineral sunscreens in several thin layers. I still use my usual 2 finger-lengths of sunscreen; I just apply that amount in 3 or more thin layers, fully blending out each layer before adding the next. This also helps me get full even coverage, with no gaps. I also apply chemical sunscreens in layers—just 2 layers though—to make sure I don’t miss any parts of my face.

Oh, and I can understand how LRP’s liquidy sunscreen might not’ve played nice with your skin or skincare. I’ve tried the European version of that sunscreen and a few Japanese liquidy/watery sunscreens, and sometime this month I’ll test First Aid Beauty Hydrating Sunscreen Milk with Colloidal Oatmeal BROAD SPECTRUM 45 1.7 oz / 50 mL. Most of these liquidy/watery/milky runny sunscreens pill badly on my skin though, regardless of what (if anything) I apply beneath them. But they work well for many other people. In my earlier post, I mentioned Supergoop’s Every Single Face watery sunscreen and how I’ve never tried it. The ingredient list reminded me why: it contains lavender, my facial skin’s archenemy. But I do hope FAB’s plays nice with my skin because oats are a fantastic skin soother for me. Also hope whichever Supergoop sunscreen you try will work for you!

Re: My Acne prone girlies, I need help!

Welcome @KAMIECE

My skin is overly sensitive at times, and I am medium, oily combo, so for me Fenty Beauty by Rihanna Hydra Vizor Mineral SPF 30 Refillable Moisturizer works, but it does have a discernable lavender cast if you don't rub it in.

I go in with Supergoop! 100% Mineral (Re)setting Powder Face Sunscreen SPF 35 to counter it when I'm not wearing makeup
