Post in Acne-Prone Skin

Is it really all that bad to pop pimples? Help, I'm OBSESSED. =[=[

Okay, so I'm on vacay in Long Island for the summer.  I don't know if it's the area or if something is going on with my skin, but I've started breaking out more than usual.  This is bad, because I have a problem.  Everytime I get a pimple, I just HAVE to pop it (once it has a white surface).  I also am obsessed with extracting dirt from my pores.  I don't know if they're little blackheads or what, but I have to push those out too.

The problem is that now that I have these acne scabs, my skin looks really dry in that particular area, and then it makes my foundation look cakey over it.  The foundation kindof brings out the outline of the broken-out areas because they're so dry, even though I use the smashbox photo finish primer.

Does popping the pimple make it stick around longer, or does it help it go away faster to just get rid of the white stuff?  And does extracting the dirt from my pores increase the pore size??  I have been using some drying paste in a little blue tube by Clean and Clear, but it doesn't seem to help speed up the healing of my zits... it just dries up the skin around it.

It seems like I keep getting zits in the same areas for some reason, and it creates an ugly red, irritated area.  I didn't even break out this much when I was a teenager...

Any product suggestions and/or advice on whether or not it's okay to pop all of my pimples?  It's getting really bad and affecting my foundation. =[  (I prefer natural products, but any product suggestions will be appreciated and taken into consideration)

Yes, popping zits with your fingers is bad. It squeezes the contaminations further into the skin to spread them to the surrounding area, causing a localized breakout

There are thousands of spot treatments or similar products you can use to treat acne once it emerged, with patience. This is the healthiest method. Look for products containing salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide.

But, if you want your pimples gone now and you can't wait, or you love to pop zits, use a tool called an extractor. Sephora Collection Double-Ended Blemish Extractor ($16) should do the trick. There are tons of Youtube videos out there to explain how to use them.

Popping zits feels so good. And so satisfying. I feel you, girl. haha

Just do it the right way! When done correctly, your skin should just go back to normal, and no, the pore won't get bigger unless you've scarred it from being too harsh.

1. If a pimple is ready, you can pop it. Meaning: only when you can see all the puss at the surface in a concentrated area. Do NOT pop anything that's under the skin or anything you need to force out.

2. Use an extractor. I think sephora or any beauty store should have one. It's a little thing-bob with a loop on either end.

3. on CLEAN skin with CLEAN hands, with a CLEAN tool, gently (never force!!!) press the tool onto the ready zit or blackhead. You'll have to feel this out, but usually the pore will want to spew out stuff in a certain direction. Work with the pore.

4. Clean the area and the tool. Cleanse your face.

5. Hold a dry cotton pad on the area gently to absorb any excess oil that will be spewing out. You can stop doing this once the oil stops running out

6. Continue with your moisturizer, and use a light spot treatment. I like using the Tata Harper Resurfacing Mask. It's clear, too.

By the way, do this at night to give your skin a while to recover from any irritation.

It might seem strange but my pimples WON'T disappear if I don't pop it, it just sits there even if I put acne treatment on for the whole week. Weird!

I feel you, oh gosh, it's a terrible habit but so hard to break! Try not to pop them though, it only worsens the acne and will irritate your skin!

One time I popped a pimple, and three more appeared the next day. What the hell?!?! This article is absolutely right, don't ever pop! Trust me, I know how hard it is to avoid popping a pimple or zit sometimes, so it really helps to have a method of avoiding or properly treating blemishes. Along with this article, I loved what I found at this acne site: info is helpful!

First I have to say that no one wants to stare at a greenie, so if you get a white head, pop it.  They're are rules tho, wash your face and hands first, if it doesn't come out easily leave it, and you should never have broken skin or a scab when your done picking.  Wash after your done too, using a mild cleanser is a good thing, Purpose is really good, found at target.  I will recommend a good lotion too, it is very moisturizing but sinks in quick it's a gel, Clinique Moisture Surge.  If I seem to be getting more zits I exfoilate with Clinique Exfoliating Scrub.  If I over picked, I use vitamin e oil on the broken skin.  Aquaphor is good to put on broken skin too, healing spots properly and keeping them moist is important in avoiding scarring.

I think everyone knows it's bad, but we do it anyway. I don't pop like cystic acne or those pimples that are under the surface, but the white ones, if they're a tender, I do it because for some reason when I go out sometimes they'll pop on their own. I don't know if it's because I move my face a lot or there's just too much pressure built into them, but I figured it's better to pop them and deal with them before they pop on their own in a restaurant or on the street and the puss starts dripping on to other parts of your skin. If you're worried about getting scars, you may want to try Argan oil. It's really good for scars because it has Vitamin E, but instead of the Josie Maran one, you should try the Garden of Wisdom one because it's cheaper. I would suggest using it at night because it can look too oily during the day time. I also think there's proof that if you can pop a pimple right, there shouldn't be scarring, like my facialist used to do extractions on me and there was no scarring whatsoever. And she has clients with beautiful skin who got extractions, too. No scarring also. Sadly, it's expensive so I don't go anymore, but you may want to look into getting a good facial. I hope this helps!

I have the same problem, the moment I find a whitehead the urge to pop it overcomes me. My mother always told me that picking pimples could lead to scarring, but I figure scars can be always be removed. Until recently I never knew what else popping zits could elicit. See, by squeezing a pimple you could, inadvertedly, be pushing the debris from your pore deeper into your skin. This can cause the folicle wall to burst and leak infected material into the innermost layer of your skin. Gross, right?! Plus if your hands aren't clean it could cause even more problems, you might be spreading even more oil and dirt onto your skin! So I would say keeping a strict "hands off" policy might be best.

To maintain a crystal clear complexion I recommend:

Boscia Clear Complexion Kit ($48)

This set provides you with a full skin care regimen including a cleanser, toner, spot treatment, and moisturizer, to bring balance and clarity to your skin with the benefits of nature. (Boscia is an entirely natural skin care line!)

Hope this helps!
