Are facials really necessary or do they make breakouts worse??

I get acne ever so often, it would come for months then clear up and then come again! How do i make it stop? Would a deep facial help?

I have serious acne and I've gotten facials before, but I stopped after getting an allergic reaction from the product my facialist was recommending. When I first got extractions, they hurt like hell, but you learn to withstand the pain. And also, you'll look like a strawberry the first few days after the facial, so be sure to bring a hat and glasses to shield yourself from the environment. Facials can be expensive depending on where you get them. Be sure to find a good facialist on Yelp or something. Good luck!

I agree with the poster above that says to get a clarisonic, it is like getting a mini facial but you have to use a good cleanser and also follow up with some good exfoliation a few times a week (try Kate Somerville's Exfolikate). Also, get a good mask that is good for your skin type.

All that said, I think that nothing beats a prof facial. I have to say my skin never looks better than when I get facials. I want to say almost a year before my wedding I was getting month facials at Mario Badescu's salon (namely cause their products are good and dont make me breakout and also it was $65 for an hour and half! Unheard of in NY!) Anyway, I would get them religiously every month and at first my skin did "purge" itself but then it evened out and I had no acne at all. I looked flawless for the wedding but now I cant really afford them anymore, so I only get them during spa week or if I catch a really really good deal. I would always recommend getting a signature facial as they tailor them to your face and then have them recommend what facial you will need if you ever want to go back.

Facials may seem to initially make break outs "worse...

Facials may seem to initially make break outs "worse," but that is really because they bring impurities to the surface and get them out of your skin. If you do regular facials, you will see an improvement in overall skin texture and condition. You don't need to go to a salon to get one. I would suggest investing in the best Clairsonic you can afford.( http://www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P245414&categoryId=C19920

Then get a good skincare line that agrees with your skin.

(Like this one, for example: http://www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P275100&categoryId=B70 )

Using the Clairsonic with a good product is like getting  a minifacial once or twice a day and you will definitely notice a difference in your skin. I've been using one and after one week I had a period of breakouts for about 3 days.

I used this product to treat them:

After two weeks, I had fewer acne bumps, and smoother skin. I can go without foundation now!

But even if you just do regular facials on yourself, you will see an improvement over time.

Hope this helps!

Thank you! This answer helps a lot ^_^ > I was thinking of buying the Clairsonic, but i wasn't sure if it was only for people without acne. Would definitely invest in one!

i get a facial once a month.  it helps exfoliate the skin and i get steamed too which helps the pores.  also you can get extractions done, this means they get rid of blackheads and other blemishes for you.
