Acne prone skin products

Hey everyone.  I am 31 and recently realized that i have been neglecting my skin which has caused serious issues. Some days my skin feels super dry flaky with T zone oily these days it seems oily over all. White, black heads inflammatory acne. Hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone. Anyone who can recommend what should I use? Trying to  find Salicylic acid Cleanser here in Canada but unavailable

Re: Acne prone skin products

I have had all of these skin issues! Proactiv products have SAVED my skin. Proactiv Proactiv+ 3-Step System, 30 Day Introductory Size Proactiv Solutions Renewing Cleanser Proactiv Emergency Blemish Relief

I hope this helps! I could not recommend these products enough! Let me know if you have any questions 🙂

Re: Acne prone skin products

Use the GLAMGLOW SUPERTONER™ Exfoliating Acid Solution Toner then the GLAMGLOW SUPERMUD® Charcoal Instant Treatment Mask 3.5 oz/ 100 g on your oily areas. For uneven skin tone, I would recommend adding a physical exfoliator, such as, Tatcha The Rice Polish Foaming Enzyme Powder to your skincare routine. The Classic (white one) is for normal skin, Deep (green one) is for oily skin, Gentle (purple one) is for dry skin, and the Calming (blue one) is for sensitive skin. It's a powder that you pour into one hand, add a few drops of water with the other hand, then rub both hands together to create a thick foam, then you massage into your face for 15-20 seconds, which physically exfoliates your skin.

Re: Acne prone skin products

Hi girl,

I've been guilty of the same behaviour. With quarantine and stress, I skipped face washings and have the marks to prove it 😕

You have to be gentle with clarifying your skin, as using harsh products strips the skin and basically puts it into overdrive, making your condition worse.

I've been loving the new Sephora Clean line, and SEPHORA COLLECTION Clarifying Peel Pads 60 Pads contain a natural salicylic acid that is both effective and gentle. It's also super affordable.

Make sure you use a good cleanser, toner (I started to use Thayer's Witch Hazel Toner with Lavender and it's great and doesn't strip the skin) and moisturizer. I posted some tips on Maskne that has greatly improved my life which may also help you: Maskne Advice

Re: Acne prone skin products

Hi @nyfashionista

Thanks for replying in detail so happy to found something that has Salicylic acid plus easy to use. I have read the Maskne as well I just go out for errands other wise everything is working from home but yeah other things have made my skin yucky. Would you please share what do you use to double cleanse and moisturizer?

Re: Acne prone skin products

Hey!

My combo skin doesn't tolerate oils at all, no matter if it's a cleanser, serum or cream- it just clogs my pores. Therefore if I'm wearing face makeup I use philosophy Purity Made Simple twice instead of an oil based cleanser and a regular cleanser. Otherwise, I use it once and make sure to massage and rinse well. For moisturizer, I am liking GLAMGLOW GLOWSTARTER™ Mega Illuminating Moisturizer Nude Glow for the AM because it is not thick and illuminates skin. For PM I use Shiseido White Lucent MultiBright Night Cream which helps with marks. I purchased Thayer's Witch Hazel with Lavender Toner from Whole Foods and it is helping as well, and doesn't dry my skin!

Consistency is best. Best of luck! 💓

Re: Acne prone skin products

Hi! I would suggest using a gentle cleanser acne like Kate Somerville EradiKate Daily Cleanser 4 oz/ 120 mL . I love this product! It works really well without over drying. Then, I would use the SEPHORA COLLECTION All Day Hydrator - Hydrate & Glow 1.01oz/ 30mL . This contains Hylaraunic Acid, which absorbs moisture from the air. This really helps with flaky, dry skin. Even though I have acne, it doesn't break me out, and it leaves my skin feeling extra smooth. Don't forget your sunscreen! Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen Invisible Broad Spectrum SPF 40 PA +++ 1.7 oz/ 50 mL

Have a great day! 🙂

Re: Acne prone skin products

Thanks for replying  I ordered this yesterday Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow PHA + BHA Pore-Tight Toner 5.07 oz/ 150 mL would it be beneficial? Toner should be applied in pm ?

Re: Acne prone skin products

@Xeen This particular toner is an exfoliating one so you would only use it once a day (for many that would be at night). Though for a lot of people, daily exfoliating can be irritating so you may want to start with just two or three times a week. This one is relatively gentle, but it depends on your personal experience with chemical exfoliation.

In general, there are a wide variety of toners so how often and when to use them really depends on the specific toner that you're talking about. A hydrating toner for example could be use twice a day, every day with no problems.

All that said, do you already have a cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen in place? I wouldn't start using this toner until you do have those down. Introducing exfoliating products without having that basic routine in place can dry out your skin causing increased oil production and irritation and can also increase your susceptibility to sun damage.

Re: Acne prone skin products

Hey @quspork

Thankyou for replying me in detail. You are absolutely right about all the things you have mentioned because of negligence and sun burn my skin has become really sensitive.  I was using Avene cleanser and Aveeno Sunscreen which I think it's not working for me I am trying to find Salicylic acid Cleanser but Inkey List, CeraVe out of stock so for now I can say cleansing, moisturizing are not in place. I have bought Cerave Salicylic acid moisturizer and using it for 2 days. Any suggestions where I can get Salicylic Acid cleanser and Moisturizer and for sunscreen I am thinking of buying  La Roche Posay one.

Re: Acne prone skin products

@Xeen I would caution you against using too many products with salicylic acid. It's very likely to overly dry your skin and lead to irritation, especially since you already have a toner with BHA. I would suggest a gentle cream cleanser like philosophy Purity Made Simple or First Aid Beauty Mini Pure Skin Face Cleanser 2 oz/ 56.7 g or Cerave hydrating cleanser. I'd then switch to a gentle moisturizer, like belif The True Cream Aqua Bomb 1.68 oz/ 50 mL, CosRX Oil-free Moisturizing Lotion, Caudalie Vinosource Moisturizing Sorbet 1.3 oz / 40 mL, or Benton Snail Bee Steam Cream. La Roche Posay is a good option for sunscreen if you want to give that a try. And then I'd add in a BHA/salicylic acid serum to help with breakouts. I'd also recommend trying double cleansing with a cleansing oil first before the gentle cleanser if you haven't tried that before. It's really great for cleaning out pores and is one of the things that really helped me get a handle on my breakouts.

Hi @quspork

Wow dear you have so much knowledge I am a newbie it's so great to learn about all the products  and what ingredient does what. Read it  about BHA and Salicylic acid are almost like twins. So what do you suggest for now should I stop using the SA Cerave moisturizer for now? I really don't want more flaky dead skin. I will order one of the cleanser you mentioned and have already started putting sunscreen even when I am indoors. Yes I have heard that to reduce breakouts yo

Should I use Vitamin C as well not all together maybe after a little while? Any recommendations for that?

Re: Acne prone skin products

@Xeen Salicylic acid actually a type of BHA. I'd wager it's the most common type, but there are a couple others. If you are switching to a gentle cleanser, you may want to try the SA moisturizer for a bit and see how it works out for you. Just keep an eye out for whether your skin feels moisturizers enough or not. It's all very skin dependent and what works for one may not work for someone else. You just want to be careful about using too many exfoliating acid products in one routine so you don't over do it! My favorite oil cleanser is Shiseido Perfect Cleansing Oil w/ Grape Seed Oil 6 oz / 180 ml but I know that's more a spendy one. There are some great, cheaper options though, like The Face Shop Rice Water Bright Light (though this one is fragranced) and DHC cleansing oil. Vitamin C is great for hyperpigmentation so it might be something to consider down the road. My recommendation there is to look for something with actual ascorbic acid vs one of the derivatives. The one that's worked best for me is Tiam My Signature C Source.

Re: Acne prone skin products

@Xeen

Toner is used day and night right after washing your face.  I personally prefer to put it on a cotton pad, but you can use your clean palms to apply it to your face.

I've never tried that toner before so I can't really say anything about it working well or not.
