@PDMB Well you've got the order generally correct. Although high light can go over or under a setting powder, and powder isn't always necessary.

Pick a primer and foundation that suit your skin type and what kind of finish you want. Some primers I would call "pore focused", they are mattifying and smooth out your skin surface with a bit of silicone-y ingredients. There are hydrating ones, "illuminating", ones that are better at filling in some wrinkles. So depends on your skin type.

And foundation, figure out if you want a "full", medium, light, coverage, as well as if you want a matte, dewy, or neutral finish. Matte foundations can be a lifesaver for oily skin but they can also make your skin look flat and emphasize texture. A dewy finish complements more skin types and ages, but if you dislike the finish it's not for you.

Concealer -- what kind of concealer you get (and what color) depends how you want to use it. The general rule of thumb is a shade a bit light and yellow-toned for under your eyes (to brighten and cancel out dark circles), while something that matches your skin is better if you're using it on acne.

You can use a setting powder to keep your makeup lasting longer. Between a good primer and foundation, setting powder isn't always needed. For example, I'll use powder if I'm wearing blush and want to make sure it lasts, but I don't wear it daily.

Highlighter you can play around with. You can finish your look with a light dusting on your orbital bone, you can sweep it across your cheek bones for a bolder look. I put highlighter on before powder, if I'm wearing powder, but you have to make sure you've got a powder that's not dulling the highlighter. I think Givenchy's loose powder is great for adding a very soft finish without dulling the makeup underneath it. Laura Mercier's powder is also extremely popular.

Let me know if you have any more specific questions.. and good luck 🙂

Hi @PDMB I like makeup but am more obsessed with skincare. Now, that we are in the colder months, I tend to use more. Here is how I apply: primer (same for face and lids); color corrector if I see I need extra help that day; eye shawdow base color; BB cream or light/medium foundation; eye and brow makeup; highlighter; contour and blush. I like using Too Faced Hangover setting mist. I also reapply sunscreen and a hydrating facial mist throughout the day. Hope this helps!

@PDMB Yeah, don't worry about mixing and matching with brands. That's the way to get the best of each category, for your skin. I'll tell you some of the products I have tried and liked.

For primers, there are so many to choose from. I'm currently using Farsali's unicorn elixir, because it is very lightweight but still has a 'tacky' finish to it that helps your makeup stay on longer. Before that I've used benefit's Porefessional, which was very good at keeping my makeup looking smooth and my skin fairly matte. Sephora has their "beauty amplifying mattify primer" that feels very similar. But almost every major brand -- smash box, urban decay, has this type of primer. There are also more hydrating and illuminating primers. (I'd put farsali in this category). Tarte's quench hydrating primer gives good adherence if you want moisture. YSL touché éclat blur primer is very hydrating and gives a glow, and I've never tried it but I know that Becca's "backlight primer" is very popular.

Foundation is an even bigger arena. I hate to wear full-coverage foundations, but Too Faced's "Born This Way" seems to be a stand out in the category. The Fenty has a similar effect and finish -- fairly full coverage, soft-matte finish. Nars Sheer Glow is what I use, I like it because it goes on so thin, I found it to be the closest to a naked-skin feel. I also use Dr Jart Premium BB, especially more in the winter now, when I want a really radiant finish. That is very moisturizing and has a thicker texture, feels like a lotion on your skin kind of. This is pretty light coverage, although if you're using a concealer, most people don't need anything more than a light or medium coverage.

Under eye concealers I like Sephora's "Bright Future Gel Serum", Tatcha's Pearl, and YSL touché éclat. The Sephora one is most like traditional concealer, and can be used anywhere you want extra coverage. It wears well and is lightweight. The Tatcha Pearl was a splurge for me, but I find that it does a great job of just making my under eye area look really perfect without too much fuss. I have some puffiness and circles and find it just fills it in nicely. The YSL is a classic, and there are several dupes out there, that one I'd only use under eyes and a subtle highlight to your Cupid's bow or down the front of your nose. Nars Radiant Creamy concealer is very very popular, and if I wanted to splurge on a concealer it's the one I would buy. I use the Sephora bc I don't use concealer much and it costs half as much.

There are so many fun highlighters out there. Becca probably has the best highlighter, I feel like I've tried every one of them in-store. Champagne pop is their most universal color, I use Pearl bc I like something more ethereal, but not only is it a great highlighter but it comes in a bunch of different colors so you can find what you like. I also had to buy the Fenty diamond bomb highlighter once I tried it. It is very unique, with very fine glitter in a gel-cream formula so you get a wet-look, kind of. Farsali and Kaja also make jelly highlighters that are similar texture. I think you'll have to see if you prefer a brush-on powder highlighter or one of the jellies. The jelly highlighters go on great with fingers, but it's more difficult to get a precise application with them. The powders, on the other hand, (like Becca, ABH highlighting kits, etc) with the right brush can give you a targeted application, it just has a different look. I like both, really. One thing about layering -- jelly highlighters should go under powder, while the powder highlighters can go over or under.

And I recommended my favorite and the most popular powder. I prefer the Givenchy because it is so soft, but the Laura Mercier gives a great finish as well. There are other powders that offer a matte finish, which can be nice to use during a humid day but I think for normal skin types, they don't look good on top of your makeup. For example, I bought a really cheap Elf powder last summer when it was just so humid I couldn't keep my face dry. But if I were to put that on top of my makeup on a regular day, the luminous finish of my foundation and highlighters would look dull.

By the way, I'm 33 with fairly normal skin and no big wrinkle or pore issues, so I am recommending so many things I use because it sounds like we have similar skin types.

Since it sounds like you have fairly good skin, I'd follow the general rule of keep it lightweight. Full coverage foundations, for example, have so much pigmentation in them that you need to go in and add three colors of blush / bronzer just to make your skin look like normal skin again, if that makes any sense, while a medium coverage lets some of the natural rosiness of your cheeks etc show through. A lot of the popular primers I personally dislike because they add a noticeable layer of film on top of my skin, but they do a great job of smoothing out pores and lines, so I can see why some people would use them. Go easy on concealer, usually just a bit under the eyes is all you need.

One last thing, talking about all this complexion makeup, I'm thinking about brushes. There are lots of brushes out there and you don't need most of them. Primer and foundation I always apply with fingers, that's how it warms up and melts into your skin, but a foundation brush is nice if you want to apply a thicker layer. Anyway, there are three or four brushes I actually use. A small stippling brush, or "concealer" brush, really helps with blending in concealer. It's not necessary I just decided it saved enough time to be worth it. I got a fan brush to apply highlighter and blush. You can get a narrow sweep or more diffuse application depending on how you angle it, it's versatile and easy to figure out. I enjoy having a big powder brush. I use it to not only apply loose powder, but to just kind of blend in anything that looks too sharp .. blush, highlighter, concealer, sometimes it just needs a really soft brush to get the right look. Elf makes good, inexpensive brushes. I would start there.

If all of this sounds complicated, it isn't. I personally spend about 3 minutes on makeup most days, maybe closer to ten when I am trying something complicated with eyeshadow.

I hope that was helpful!! I know too much about makeup and skincare, and enjoy putting all that useless info to use :). Will you post a picture once you've found your routine? Is there anything else?
