Hello, BIC Beauties! If the idea of makeup capsules piques your curiosity, or you're interested in seeing what's in the beauty collection or weekly makeup bag of your fellow BIC beauties, jump right on in - with questions, comments or a capsule of your own to share.

To add a fun take on putting together a makeup capsule, I've included theme(s) for the weekly capsule - some weeks, I have enough products in my stash (eek!) to make a whole capsule based on the prompt; other weeks, I have just one or two items that fit neatly within theme.

What is a capsule makeup collection?

A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.

Why have a capsule makeup collection?

Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions. Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.

Why weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me. If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.

What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?

No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.

@itsfi Very interesting! I would love to be the person who has a capsule collection. I typically shop my stash for products every few weeks and keep those items (in a gratis box) in my washroom to help me get ready in the morning. Having those products and my panning items right there in the morning helps me when I'm still not quite awake. I do know however that with my inability to declutter I'll only ever get my stash down to size with panning and smart purchasing.

Are you planning on doing some declutters as you go through your stash to whittle down your collection or just try to give yourself a capsule every week to work on?

@missjeanie, I'm definitely planning to declutter as I go. The problem I think will be if I get too far into my head - "well, maybe it'll work out if ... x, y, or z" and I get stuck with not wanting to waste something. But you raise an excellent point - thank you. As I'm noodling on what you said, it seems like a good method for me will be to put products that I think are just "meh" or not suitable for me into a separate box, to either (a) incorporate again with other products in a different week or (b) declutter by donating to a charitable organization that accepts barely used beauty products, distributing them among friends or disposing of it. With the latter, unless it's just better suited for another season, my personal rule will be to, in the words of Elsa, let it gooooo 🎵🎶🎵🎶, if I don't use within the next 1 - 2 months. That seems reasonble...I think.

@itsfi I like your box system! I really should join you in this.... I just need to figure how how I could make it work. For my being is not a decluttering one. Though it may be a good way even without decluttering to get use out of products I'm just not reaching for for one reason or another. If I stole your boxes ideas, I could move products I've used already into a box and continue to draw new products from the main collection.... To borrow your turn of phrase... I need to noodle on this.

lol, that's completely fair @danielledanielle! I tried to condense it down to as few words as possible but I'm wordy. 😣🤣 I'll try to remember to include a "tl;dr" in the original post when I post tomorrow morning about this week's products to be used. I'm sorta combining a shop your stash and declutter project with the goal of coming up with a curated group of makeup products that will work for me year round. I'm pretty sure whatever I end up with will include more pieces than in most people's capsule makeup collection, but I'm good with that. If all goes according to plan, I'll have far fewer products than I do now, and they'll be ones I actually use with some regularity.

If you prefer to rotate products every two weeks or monthly, go for it. As for the themes, it doesn't have to be every product fits it, it could just be the lip products or the foundation, etc. (those will be the two categories, the lip one especially, where I shouldn't have any issue finding one in my stash that fits whatever the weekly theme -that says so much about how many lip products I have - I know you're shocked that I have a lot. 😂🤣😂

Go with the boxes idea!!! Run with it! Sephora shopping bags also work nicely. Or the gratis boxes. I've found though that keeping them somewhere where you can see it is helpful. Otherwise, a year or more could go by before you rediscover you had these products you were supposed to donate or toss. Errrr .... or so I've heard that's happened before ... to ... "people", other people. 😅

I reread your description of this and realized, it’s like prepping outfits ahead of time except it’s makeup. I make my kids do this for school days but I’m so bad at doing it for myself… 😅🫠

@JoSometimes, yes, some of the weekly themes are based on how I go about getting ready for the day in real life, like Week 4. Jump right on in; it will be nice to see what items are your 'go to'.

Makeup capsules are a spin off from having a capsule wardrobe. I've tried but have never really been able to downsize my clothing collection, seasonally or in general. There are definitely some parts of this that are similar to picking out what to wear; this also looks to downsize the pool of products (or clothes) from which to choose from. I am fairly certain that I will have more than just a few makeup items in my collection by the end of this project, but if I'll have less makeup products than I do now and they will for the most part, be ones I use for some look or another, be it a fresh faced every day look or a more glammed up one.

There's a good amount of products I have that I never use, and I don't have them because I'm collecting them or they have sentimental value to me. I'll start with products that I have used or already opened or that I've been meaning to use for some time but haven't gotten around to it. From there, if there's something I just have never gotten around to and I can't reasonably justify it (i.e., I have something similar - pretty sure that's gonna be the case with my neutral nude/brown eyeshadow palettes, ha!) then I'll donate it or give it to someone who can use and appreciate it. -- - I typically use a Korean sunscreen with DE D-Bronzi but want to try it the SF sunblock this week. Both are favorites of mine and it would be great if they worked well together.

-- Skindinavia The Makeup Finishing Spray Bridal - this was the first makeup setting spray I ever used.

-- - I was introduced to this highlighter in a gratis package a few years back and have picked up a mini or full size ever since.

There are 2 shadows that I have not hit pan on; I'm determined to do so this year as it will be the last year I include the Biba palette in my pan it! portfolio.

-- - testing this out for the first time. I had the applied to the tips of my lashes at Sephoria NYC and liked how it added oomph (not just in color) to my lashes. Happy to see this in my Sephoria bag.

-- Chanel Longwear Lip Pencil - 162 Nude Brun
-- - hmmm, I forgot this can be used to line the lips and the eyes until I tagged the product.

BAG:
-- I received this soft, pretty, pink corduroy makeup bag when I stopped by the INN Beauty booth at Sephoria NYC. It's available on the brand's direct site as part of certain makeup and skincare bundles. It's very spacious. I had no problem zipping up the bag with all these products in it - didn't have to squish anything into the bottom or corners, didn't have to smoosh the bag closer together to get it to zip all the way. Love that, but it also means I could add all of these items in the bag - this was a lot more than I thought I would have for this week. Eek! Here we go!
