Best Shampoo/Conditioner for Native American Hair

Hello! My husband is Navajo and has gorgeous, thick, long hair. He hasn't been using conditioner and, now that we've aged a bit, his hair is starting to thin. I think it's from breakage. Anyone have any suggestions for a good shampoo and conditioner that isn't heavily perfumed?

When you say you think it’s thinning due to breakage, does the hair still appear thick towards the root and get thinner towards the ends?

It appears thicker at the top and then thins out near the bottom, although that effect has been somewhat diminished now that he's getting consistent trims. It does break a lot, though, as he's pretty brutal with the tangles when he brushes his hair. I've tried to get him to use a leave in conditioner, but he hasn't been doing it. He said he'll give a conditioner a shot, but I'm just not sure what would be most effective for him. Our stylist recommended one for him, but it had tea tree oil and he didn't like the smell or sensation.

is what I would select. There is a scent, however it doesn’t linger on the hair after you shampoo/condition.
