The Travel Beauty Thread

(January 2023) Thought I’d resurrect this thread, now that there’s a bit more possibility of travel these days! I would love to live vicariously and learn from fellow BICers, so please post any tips, pics, and/or your fave travel minis or routine! I’m still not doing a lot of travel these days, but may post some pics and notes from past trips. 💗💗💗

Since the old travel thread sadly got lost in the switchover (😢😢😢) it was suggested a while back, and I’ve been meaning to get a new one started. If there is one already for this, let me know. I travel a bit for work and for fun, and I love checking out beauty stores and seeking out exclusive or hard-to-find items in different places around the world. Some of my favorite makeup destinations have been the Face Powder and Perfume Museum in Torino, Italy (a surprise find) and the Les Merveilleuses Laduree in Tokyo. I have relied on great tips from other BT/BICers on many of my trips, especially Toronto and Tokyo, so I would love to keep this updated as a resource for BIC.

Please share your discoveries, store reviews, pictures, purchases, and travel tips, and I’ll try to keep and update summaries here in the main post for future reference. If you don’t have a chance for much travel, feel free to share your favorite beauty destinations in your home city. I plan to update with photos below from various trips as I have the chance to organize my archives and update. What do you guys think? Feel free to make suggestions on how to organize this thread, too, it might be a bit of a work in progress. Thanks and happy travels BT/BIC!

Thx for starting this. I believe the old thread was created by a dear BT member whose account got deleted so I don’t think the thread would survive. Looking forward to read about everyone beautiful journeys

Thank you for reviving this thread @sister13. When I was growing up car trips were the norm for our vacations. My dad would point the car in one direction and drive. We lived in Kansas City, Missouri at the time which is in the center of the USA. Most times we would drive to New York to visit family. The car trip was always considered a part of the vacation. This was before the interstate system was completed so we drove many secondary roads. Our final vacation from KCMO was to Yellowstone/Salt Lake City. I still dream of returning to Yellowstone National Park. Over the next four years we lived four different areas. I still dream of my cross country trip done my way hopefully when I retire.

One goal is to drive Route 66. When I have a free moment I take my Atlas and dream of planning my dream trip.

Innsbruck Austria is one of my favorite places in the world! I spent several weeks there almost 20 years ago, and was recently back for a conference. While I did not have a ton of free time, I tried to make the most of what I had. I was mostly in the Old Town (Altstadt), which is so charming, everywhere you look is a postcard! Innsbruck is not too big, walkable, with stunning Mountain views and beautiful promenade along the River Inn. Surprisingly, there were some real gems for beauty destinations, as well, AND EVEN A MERMAID SHOP! Sadly it was closed and my last day, but When I get back, this’ll be 1st on my list!

I also considered buying a real Dirndl but wavered in the end out of an abundance of practicality (where would I wear it?), a decision I regretted before wheels up for home! Next time!

Anyway, on to the photos!

Lovely shop Grüne Erde, with Natural Beauty and housewares.Lovely skincare and cosmetics section.The whole place was lovely, I especially loved the bulk herbs at the cashwrap! Sehr schön!Bought a makeup remover and gentle balm cleanser, got samples and a free lavender sachet.

Thanks @heartsmyface, you are one of our travel beauty extraordinaires! And your advice for Tokyo was priceless! I’ll be posting some past trips but looking forward to a few new destinations for me this year to add, also!

We did exclusively car trips, too, growing up! With packed snacks and lunches and camping, no fast food or hotels, lol! @Loretta55

@sister13 How fortuitous! I just got back from a quick London jaunt for business and forgot how much fun it is to get away (even if it is just for work). I take hilariously awful pictures (if I remember at all) and they're usually of inane things like the supermarket. I love reading about other people's travel experiences, especially for places I've never been, so I'm bookmarking this thread asap 🙂

I'll post a better recap later, but for now, I'll leave you with my two most random photos from London: Me in front of the National Gallery next to a giant thumbs up sculpture (and I think the Canadian embassy?) and scotch eggs from M&S.

Innsbruck Part 2:

Acqua Alpes fragrance: they had about 5 signature fragrances made from Alps water streams. Very tempted by these but didn’t end up purchasing.

This Weigano Perfumerie and Kosmetik surprised me. Tiny store front but a long narrow store inside packed floor to ceiling with prestige fragrance, cosmetics and skincare. I could have spent hours here. They had a wonderful German perfumer featured Lengling, and I’m hoarding some samples until I get back to Germany/Austria next time.Weigano.Weigano, the store went back like 3x this length. Heaven!Nägele & Strubell (Nails & Brushes) is another high end Austrian shop/chain. They carried Annick Goutal, and some Middle Eastern fragrances that were new to me. Lots of variety.Douglas is pretty common over they’re, more like an Ulta, with combination of mid and lower end cosmetics, beauty, hair and body products.There’s a nice Lush, as well.Previously mentioned, the most lovely shop with reasonably priced dirndls (in the EUR200 range, not all EUR600+.)Missed the Swarovski museum during opening hours, but look at that adorable blue gorilla!SO. MUCH. SPARKLE!!!

@sister13 my parents were not campers but we did stop along the way to purchase snacks and sandwiches.

When I sign on to my phone in the main feed featured by National Geographic are the 30 Best Cities to visit in the US, Kansas City, Missouri is number 21.

I have settled in Northern New Jersey which is ideal for great day trips. One of my favorite destinations is Pennsylvania. Many of the older and smaller communities have remained unchanged my modern conveniences. I do not even have to drive far to witness this.

I was hoping you’d post! Um, that thumbs up sculpture looks like something else up, from that angle, lol! My favorite foods from London were always: sausage rolls, Cornish pasties, curries, and the most amazing chips (fries) at every pub.

Why does every other country have THE BEST train station food, and in the US, we have the worst of the worst! @MissPuff

@sister13 Haha, I did not see that till now and my mind is usually in the gutter...

I was a huge fan of the grab-n-go foods all over the place, my day and a half to myself was spent alternating traveling to a destination, then traveling to a meal, with of course food during travel 🙂

@heartsmyface There was every permutation of pub food available as ready-to-eat in almost every market that I walked through! Meats wrapped in pastries, pastries wrapped in meats, and of course, meat wrapped in meat 🙂

I did have an amazing scotch egg in a pub though, put every other egg to shame!

It’s breathtaking! I took the scenic train down from Munich to Innsbruck. Highly recommend! They say flying in is terrifying because of the mountains, not to mention expensive. I took 9,000 pictures from the train of the most beautiful countryside. @heartsmyface

Train route München —> Innsbruck.Drinking alcohol on the train is still a thrill!

Aww, I know the feeling! Not motivated to leave the bed or house today, currently snuggled under a blanket of kitties and never want to leave! @heartsmyface

Definite trips, mostly already planned:

Santa Monica (they have a great Sephora downtown I always visit)

Las Vegas (also a great Sephora over by the Venetian with lots of luxury brands I don’t have here)

Toronto in the fall (again, yay! Hopefully with an extra day or two for fun this time)

Probable/possibles:

N. Africa

Argentina

1 or 2 Europe

China (fingers crossed!)

Couple other possibles, mostly domestic. How about you?
