Welcome to Year 7 of our Pan It! Challenge

The "Rules"

To accommodate a variety of interests, you all are encouraged to pick items to pan that are most suitable to your collections. For some, this might mean focusing on a particular type of product (like lipstick) and for others this may include a larger variety spanning your entire makeup or skincare routine.

Getting Started (please share the following)

Which item(s) you would like to work on
How long you will work on said item
Goal: explore a new item, revisit an old item, decide whether to keep pass or trash, and/or completely finish item, etc.
Starting photo of item

Please Use This Thread To...

share what item(s) you are working on,
provide comparative progress photos of your item(s) monthly (at the beginning of the month when possible),
ask questions,
encourage others,
motivate others with the looks you create with your item(s)

Tips and Tricks to Panning/Getting Some Use Out of Your Stash:

Take photos!! When you think you aren’t making a dent in anything look back at those photos, I’m certain you’ll see some changes 😃 *this is the number one recommendation for everyone, regardless of how long you’ve been panning! Those photos add up and can help you realize progress you might otherwise overlook.
If you goal is to hit pan or use something up entirely, try concentrating your brush/applicator in the same area each time you use it
Multitask your products: eyeshadows as highlighter, lipstick as blush, eyeshadow as brow powder, etc.
Layer eyeshadow to create different colors (this is especially helpful to get use out of shades you’re not fond of).
Have shadows with a ton of fall out? Use water
Watching the progress of others’ can be fun but try not compare your progress to theirs. We all use our makeup differently and have different goals.
Don’t restrict yourself to only using the item(s) you are working on. It’s more than OK to incorporate other items or take a break!
Makeup should be fun….if you begin to dread doing your makeup because you made a commitment to use a product that you now hate, TOSS IT! Do not force yourself to use up something you don’t like. Move on to something else! (This includes excluding particular shades from your goals if focusing on palettes, etc.)

Ideas to Help You Pan Those Items:

Roll the dice: number your items and use a random number generator to pick what you will use each (day/week/month/etc.)
Layer/Mask: items you are less fond of under things you like
Pan a Look: at the beginning of the week pick a look that you can wear everyday
Recreate: a look worn by a fellow BICer, celebrity, etc.
Spice up an "everyday" look by adding subtle pops of color (in the crease or on the lower lash line, mix lip products to make shades wearable, etc.)

So excited to get started on this year! Wow year 7 😮. I'm changing things up a bit this year. I really want to focus on my stash and reviewing things so with that in mind here is my project! Pan It's and Use It's.

Pan It's- Keep focusing on using my items and reviewing them, if they are on Sephora. Sephoria hit my stash hard so it's going to be a long year, but I feel hopeful.

Hair- 54 total, target of 14.
Cleansers/Toners/Exfoliators- 45 total, target of 15.
Eyes/Serums/Essence- 34 total, target of 14.
Moisturizers/Oils- 88 total, target of 8.
Masks (not including sheets)- 43 total, target of 13.
Urban Decay Vice. 19 total left, target of 2. I want to work on Discrete and Robbery. It took about 2 years to finish Bones, so I at least want to see pan in these. These will join CT Mesmerize as my work shadows.
Lip Products- I have no idea the count because they are scattered. So lip balms, masks, scrubs etc. Target 14.

Use It's- My focus is to just use them and decide if I like them or not. I have some perfumes, and I did a random generator to decide which ones to focus on. Each month I'll focus on one travel size, and one mini, not to mention my samplers, for my work perfumes. Some of these have been projects for years so I am only sticking with current untested numbers.

Travel Perfume- 50 total, target 13 ( I started in December.)
Mini Perfume- 38 total, target 13.
Blush- 40 total, target 40
Bronzer- 3ish total- target 3.
Liquid Lipstick- 56 Total, target 36
Lipstick- 112 total, target 32
Eyeshadow Palettes- 36 total, target 20
Highlighters- 115 total, target 115.
Eyeliner- 45 total, target 45
Lip Liner- 37 total, target 37.
Mascara- 18 total, target 18.
Face Products- 14 total, target 14.

If my horrible math is correct I have 327 pan its with a total target of 80. 516 use it's with a target of 386. I will be doing monthly total updates. Along with photo updates of Urban Decay and CT, 4 times a year. I took pictures of the Use It's minus the perfume, but I won't flood the post with those. I didn't take photos of the Pan It's because I did that last year and didn't see much progress with so many pictures lol.

I lied. I will add my photos in a spoiler. Each month I'll update and post the new updates. In my notebooks each month is color coded. December 23 is black, and January is a blueish color.

7 years? That's impressive @ElleElleG! This is my 5th year and I can say that I continue to learn so much from this challenge. Love and appreciate the support and encouragement that everyone here provides to one another.

* For eye shadow shades prairie and tone, I will try to hit pan on both by or before the first half of 2024. If I'm not able to do so, I will scoop out whatever product remains in each shade to hit pan and will convert them to lip balms. I'll work to use up all the products in the DIY lip balms as a way to "hit pan" on both those eyeshadow shades.

I tried to incorporate at least one (1) product from the various beauty categories - makeup (ND Biba, WA Lip Suede palette); body care (Hanni, 54 Thrones); hair care (Fable and Mane, Ceremonia , Oribe); skincare (OleHenriksen); fragrance (Phlur); and nail care (Cuccio Naturale).

I'll plan to post status updates on a monthly basis again, but like 2023, each month's post may not include an update on every product, except for the end of January to show a general idea of how much product I can expect to use up by the end of a month with "regular" use, and possibly the end of June for a mid-term status report. For the most part, my monthly updates will include updates of products that are making significantly noticeable progress.

Okay, you were not kidding when you said you have a lot of products you'll be working on this year @Samtian! And a color coded notebook, too?! Oh, this is going to be fuuuuun to see all you'll accomplish this year! 😍 I like your monthly focus for your Use It products - that sounds like an excellent idea, both to get use out of your products and to keep it fresh by mixing up the products you're working on.

Awww thank you @Samtian! 💛 I'll post photos when I do the January update to show where we started with both of those products at the start of this year's panning and where we are at the end of this month. Those two unpanned Biba shadows are going to be challenging; I'm going to use the capsule makeup challenge to find a pairing or combination of shadows for each of those shade that works so that I can be more motivated to use them (and therefore have a better chance of hitting pan on both). This will be the last panning year for Biba so I really want to try to see pan on those two shadows. 🤞

@itsfi Thank you! I actually kinda didn't describe that very well. I have these cool tab notebooks -

One for Pan It's and one for Use It's. And then each month I'm just changing the color of the pen I use to mark what I've done lol. And then when I get ready for post updates I'll mark each item in the photo with a color like my pens for each month.
