Hey all! For the last few years the lovely @lnum has hosted this thread to help us stay motivated on our no-buys and low-buys. In an effort to keep her work alive, here is the 2018 edition.

The purpose of this thread (from lnum):

This thread is a support system for all of us who are trying to maintain a budget and keep our beauty spending limited. Post here when you have a weak moment, post here to hold yourself accountable, post here when you just need someone to talk to, post here when you have advice for all of us, and post here when you make mistakes but also make gains! Many of us post here to keep track of our monthly purchases. Anything you need to say, we are all here for each other. There's no judgement here.

Feel free to share your goals, items that tempt you, missteps (we don't believe in failures), and any successes. Above all else, encourage and support one another.

I am so excited to spend another year with you all. If it wasn't for the first two years of this thread, I would never have been able to cut down my beauty spending. My goal for this year is to maintain low spending on beauty, and cut down my clothing purchases. I will be funneling that money into traveling, which is what I have done in the past and it's a great goal that truly motivates me.

I'm still so proud of everyone for making it through 2015 and 2016, limiting ourselves in the beauty product area in order to improve our lives in other areas. We all did great and here's to another year of learning and saving!

Thanks for keeping the tradition going! This thread helped me completely cut out my beauty spending, and even do a lot of general cleansing of “stuff” I thought I needed, which is still an ongoing process. Hope we all have a wonderful year saving towards our goals, and decluttering our lives.

I'll say howdy here too!

I'm not setting a no-buy because, well, I know me 😛

But...2017 was my first full year as a full-on makeup junkie, and I started with literally *nothing* (unless you count a tiny stash of 12+ year old drugstore makeup. Seriously, never wore it until a little over a year ago), so 2017 was the year of "give me all the things!". I think I did a pretty impressive job of building up a massive stash in way too short of a time frame. I'm not sure if I should be proud or ashamed 😄

I now have a lifetime's supply of makeup and skincare and then some. I can't keep that pace up! So...this year I have to stop buying everything just because I want a new pretty. I'll still grab some deals, and I'm not setting a limit or budget (which could be a mistake), but this needs to be the year of "does it really add a useful or unique facet to my collection, or is it just more stuff for the pile that doesn't get used enough as it is?". And after spending last year figuring out what I really like vs what's not for me, hopefully this shouldn't be too hard to stick to.

This thread is right up my alley!! I’ve been splurging to build up my Too Faced and KVD collections, but I really need to scale it back this year now that I have the skincare and makeup I’ve been wanting. My goal is to take it easy for the remainder of January (I have a couple hauls coming this week) and take it slow for February. March is my birthday month though, so I may find something I’ve wanted to splurge on (I really wanted the winter waves set by DryBar but it's OOS 😓) Great thread @ElleElleGbthanks for keeping this idea alive!

I’m in the same boat as you @RGbrown! My madness was a year before yours and I literally have enough of everything beauty related to last me 2 lifetimes. I luckily limited my beauty purchases in 2017 to about 1/10 of my spending from 2016. Almost everything I bought in 2017 were necessities like hair care and a few lipsticks I’d been wanting for a few years that finally went on clearance.

Lets hope we stay strong in 2018! My 2017 experience was very liberating and I’m looking forward to panning a lot of my products this year!

Hey everyone! This year I really have to be more strict.

I find that I use the same makeup daily (other than changing up lipsticks now and then), and have so much makeup just sitting untouched for weeks or months at a time.

I did another big purge yesterday and got back $360 which is going to my CC and some in savings. I need to stick to this plan. I do NOT need more makeup since all I use is the same stuff!!! I never use colorful eyeshadows and honestly I usually just use liner and mascara, and I have a ton of those.

I graduate in April and plan to get my own place in july or august so I need control and support to save!!

I'm with you @RGbrown ! I somehow managed to not snag everything that caught my eye but 2017 definitely brought a ton of growth to my collection! Good idea to ask yourself those questions when something new comes out (which seems like every other hour nowadays, LOL), may need to use those 😉

I’m going to try to take it easy on makeup spending this year, since I spent more in 2017 than I did in previous years. (I blame Hourglass) 😉

I have some skincare that I’m starting to run low on, but I don’t think I need any more makeup for quite a while. I haven’t bought any skincare/haircare/makeup since the November sale, so I’m feeling pretty good about that. That being said, I do need to go to Lush soon, since I’m out of my favourite soap, and I really need to avoid getting sidetracked and buying a bunch of stuff there.

Edit: Oops, I forgot I did purchase when we got our $25 off $50 coupon, but that was a while ago, right? I think I speak for many Canadians when I say that I would be in serious trouble if we had Ulta stores here!

Hey guys, I need to cut back on beauty spending this year too. I'm going to start by making a list of things that I CAN get this year (I might adjust it based on season) then I'm going to try to stick to it and buy low when possible. Example I know I want to get the new TF Peach palette but I'm going to make myself wait until a sale to get it at a lower price. My big problem is I like to try things so I tend to buy things I don't need when they are on sale, on weekly wow, because there is a good GWP, and when Sephora favorite sets come out (my weakness). I'm also thinking about to doing a monthly check in on my collection to purge and evaluate needs. In short: Focus on what I have and only fill gaps. Don't buy backups just they are on sale. Avoid GWP traps!

Ahh kudos to you evaluating what you use regularly and for doing a purge 😲! Letting go of things, regardless how much you use them, can be difficult so congrats on a big step! Having larger goals will certain aid the motivation, in this case a it'll certainly pay off in just a few months time!

Haha Ulta can certainly be dangerous! You're off to a good start! Skincare restocks may need necessary but it sounds like you are all set in the ~~Hourglass~~ makeup department 😉
