1. My main reason for seeking out vegan beauty products a result from my experience with them; they usually feel the best on my skin and give me the least amount of irritation, or none at all. That is not always the case, and I personally have to be more consistent in reading the ingredient lists for possible allergans because plant components are heavily featured in vegan formulas (echinacea happens to be one for me.)

2. No media channels per se; I just happen to run across some brands online at different websites.

3. Identical quality is difficult to quantify; I would consider the ingredients, and probably prefer the vegan formula.

4. Gentle, safe, healthy

5. Trendsetting, intelligent

6. No animal components in the product or in the processing of the product

I recently tried a Korean vegan brand, Dear Dahlia, for the first time. In this case, the aesthetics of the packaging is alluring. Very feminine. Their matte shadow looks good on my wrinkled eyelid, and the lip balm and sheer gloss filled in my lips and made them look fuller. If this is what vegan represents, I'm all for it!

You may have noticed that vegan products are showing up more and more in the beauty space. By Sephora standards, which may differ from others, vegan beauty products are beauty products formulated without any animal products or by-products (no beeswax, carmine, silk, honey, animal-derived squalane, etc.).

We also see other labels like clean, sustainable, cruelty-free, organic, and more but today we are solely seeking your thoughts on vegan beauty. If you have a few minutes, please leave a reply below by Wednesday, 8/21, answering the following questions or feel free to send me your answer via private message*.
Please answer the following:

Do you seek out vegan beauty products? If yes, why?

What are your go-to resources for vegan-specific beauty news and product information? Any vegan-focused websites, Instagram accounts or YouTube channels?

If hypothetically choosing between two products with identical quality and value and one is vegan. Are you more likely to purchase one over the other? If so, which one and why?

Please share up to three adjectives you associate with vegan beauty.

Please share up to three adjectives you associate with brands offering vegan products.

Extra credit: What does "vegan" mean to you?

Looking forward to hearing your responses!

I've been vegan for eleven years now. I seek out vegan products (especially vegan products with third-party vegan certification) because ethical veganism is important to me. There are so many efficacious ingredients for anti-aging and makeup that why would I chose a product that is tested on animals?

I tend to seek our information regarding vegan products via VegNews, Instagram or Facebook.

I will always chose a vegan product.

Vegan beauty = sustainable, cruelty-free, ethical

Being vegan means that I am choosing a compassionate and sustainable lifestyle. It also means that I know that the sensitivity and love my dog shows to me is exactly the same as any other animal feels.

Do you seek out vegan beauty products? If yes, why?
Not typically. I am more interested in if a product is cruelty-free or not.

What are your go-to resources for vegan beauty news and product information?
Reading product info listen on online retailer sites.

If hypothetically choosing between two products with identical quality and value and one is vegan. Are you more likely to purchase one over the other? If so, which one and why?
Again, my preference would go to whichever product is cruelty-free. If both products were cruelty-free, I would purchase the vegan product.

Please share up to three words you associate with vegan beauty.
Nothing animal-derived

Please share up to three words you associate with brands offering vegan products.
Alternative, innovative

Extra credit: What does "vegan" mean to you?
Vegan means a product does not contain animal-derived ingredients/by-products.

Do you seek out vegan beauty products? If yes, why?
I'm not going to go out on a limb and say that I exclusively shop vegan but it's something that's extremely important to me. If I'm that aware of what I put in my body, what I put on my body shouldn't be any different.

What are your go-to resources for vegan beauty news and product information?
I watch a lot of Youtube but I find a lot of the content shares my sort of view. More people talk about the claims versus the ingredients and just use it as a passing point. Inci Decoder has become my new favorite tool, I'm a complete nerd and love reading about the different ingredients and the studies claimed. I also really enjoy reading various brands' webpages and listening to them speak. I think the most enlightening read I've had lately was Farmacy's page, where I was able to argue why I can morally support them and continue to purchase the Honey mask that I love so much.

If hypothetically choosing between two products with identical quality and value and one is vegan. Are you more likely to purchase one over the other? If so, which one and why?
I'm much more likely to go for the vegan option. I don't see the need in causing any additional turmoil to the various ecosystems.

Please share up to three words you associate with vegan beauty.
Sustainable, innovative, essential

Please share up to three words you associate with brands offering vegan products.
Sustainable, clean, aware

Extra credit: What does "vegan" mean to you?
I'm not about to say that I'm a vegan, I'm not that strict, but I do have a predominately plant based diet. Being a vegan means that you're not game to consume animal byproducts, that you care about the environment and the wellbeing of the planet.

A huge thing that vegan means to me is not tested on animals. I just recently started using the Cruelty-Cutter app to check brands. Huge bummer that Sephora house brands did not pass, but it’s great to learn which of my current products passed and which didn’t. I’ll definitely be taking that sort of thing into account going forward!

Please answer the following: Do you seek out vegan beauty products? Yes. In my line of work, I am very OCD about ingredients so they are not only healthy and beneficial for my patients, but my family and friends as well. What are your go-to resources for vegan-specific beauty news and product information? Any vegan-focused websites, Instagram accounts or YouTube channels? I am very familiar with many of the vegan/clean beauty brands, but a couple of my favorite sources for new products would be Aillea, Integrity Botanicals and BeautyHabit. If hypothetically choosing between two products with identical quality and value and one is vegan. Are you more likely to purchase one over theother? If so, which one and why? Ethically it makes me feel better about the vegan product. I feel it is much healthier. Please share up to three adjectives you associate with vegan beauty. Healthy, clean, ethical. Please share up to three adjectives you associate with brands offering vegan products. Innovative, caring, progressive. Extra credit: What does \"vegan\" mean to you? Vegan simply means ethically made that has clean ingredients. I truly believe that if you put a product out there that’s vegan AND beneficial...you have done some serious homework and care about the well being of your customer’s skin. I am a Licensed Medical Aesthetician with years experience caring for patients and their skins health. Ingredients are crucial whenever I look at a product and if I had a vegan option...I will always recommend that over another. Bonus-Bonus...one of my favorite vegan/clean brands I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see you carry is Lily Lolo. ❤️

Do you seek out vegan beauty products? If yes, why? Sometimes I look for vegan products because I believe I’m sensitive to carmine. Unfortunately, I get really bad, uncomfortable, painful reactions to certain products so finding certain products, like a vegan purple eyeliner is helpful.

What are your go-to resources for vegan-specific beauty news and product information? Any vegan-focused websites, Instagram accounts or YouTube channels? I don’t follow vegan news.

If hypothetically choosing between two products with identical quality and value and one is vegan. Are you more likely to purchase one over the other? If so, which one and why? My allergy to carmine would influence my decision so I’d pick up the vegan product if all things were equal.

Please share up to three adjectives you associate with vegan beauty. Clean, cruelty-free

Please share up to three adjectives you associate with brands offering vegan products. Trendy

Extra credit: What does "vegan" mean to you? Vegan means without animal products. If something was tested on animals but made without animal products I would still consider it vegan.

Just saw my dermatologist in Beverly Hills, and I get to go on a shopping spree for paraben free, vegan, yada yada yada... makeup. Hooray. On top of the RX stuff he gave me, he also recommended brands such as Pacifica & Coola, (they don’t sell them at Sephora- found them at whole foods) and they’ve been quite good to me. No more rashes and peeling. I’m also expecting a shipment of sensitive skin friendly products (mostly vegan, paraben free, etc) and I’ll let you know whatworks/does not work for me... hopefully it’ll help you in the future. xx

Do you seek out vegan beauty products? If yes, why? I usually do not seek out vegan beauty products. However recently I have been more focused on what exactly I'm putting on my face from a chemical standpoint as I'm not getting any younger. So ingredients in products are becoming more important to me.

What are your go-to resources for vegan-specific beauty news and product information? Any vegan-focused websites, Instagram accounts or YouTube channels? Honestly the Clean label here on Sephora helps out greatly with product information. I also watch Kristen Leanna videos as well on YouTube.

If hypothetically choosing between two products with identical quality and value and one is vegan. Are you more likely to purchase one over the other? If so, which one and why? If the product that is non-vegan is a tried and true product for me then I'm going to pick that product. However if it's a new product to me, but with better ingredients (not sure if you're counting that as identical quality) then I'll go with the vegan option.

Please share up to three adjectives you associate with vegan beauty. Clean, Cruelty free, natural

Please share up to three adjectives you associate with brands offering vegan products. ethical, eco-friendly, animal friendly

Extra credit: What does "vegan" mean to you? a product that does not use any animal products whatsoever and strives to be more ecologically friendly.

I love Whole Foods too, & esp their own line of ”vegan friendly” items....but, was pleasantly surprised to fine out local Target had great stock of Pacifica AND Honest Beauty product. One line my Derm mentioned & also my esthetician raves about is Vapour (VapourBeauty.com), a higher end natural luxury skin care & cosmetics co. Typ fail to achieve the “bang” I desire w/natural cosmetics, but LOVE the pigment payoff w/Vapour, esp the lip products.
I ideally want vegan products, natural products, cruelty free, plastic free. Things have come a long way since I first started looking for this stuff, it used to be such a let down. I love that sephora is starting to cater to all this. Every once in a while I'll see something online, but I don't have time to follow influencers, or care to. Even having time to look in these forums is rare for me. I do notice today that there is a lot more relatization that what you put on your skin is important. I also have sensitive skin, so I really love that you have created a clean category, and that tech allows me to quickly compare products to my values and needs.

I seek out vegan products. It would be nice to see a lot more atSephora. One of my go-to favorites is Pacifica. They have great products and are an amazing brand - plus, I know that i can get anything they make and it’s vegan and cruelty free. What’s important to me? Vegan. Cruelty free. Effective. I honestly shop at Sephora less and less because the vegan selection isn’t great. At least the new labels are helping Make those choices obvious. Packaging matters too. And less packaging is better. Love how lush does that.

I never used to care about whether the product was vegan or not. Lately my cousin has opened my eyes to the difference and I am really starting to look into a healthier and safer way of taking care of skin and also bring out its natural glow. So yes I am starting the trend of seeking out vegan cosmetics and it has been better for my skin as I have seen the changes.

I would suggest (politely) that you read the work of any number of climate scientists as well as the recent UN report on climate change and the impact of animal agriculture in regards to this issue. I also suggest reading some of George Monbiot's articles (the Guardian). Also are you aware that 89 wildfires are currently raging in Brazil? Maybe research why that is happening?

@creamcrow wrote:
Veganism is not sustainable.
I haven’t been actively seeking vegan products out, but it’s on my list to start doing. The main adjective that pops to mind is compassion. I’m a huge animal lover, and animal testing breaks my heart. It’s hard to breakup with some of my favorite lines, but I just have to do it. There are some HG products that I just haven’t been able to duplicate. Carmine makes my most loved red lipsticks so fantastic. I’m not dumping what I have, but I am trying to find dupes for some specific loves. If items are identical, I would absolutely choose the vegan option.

Veganism requires vast amounts of land in order to grow monocultures. Given that soil is a non renewable resource it's not sustainable. If you knew even an inkling about soil science and what goes into growing crops you would realize that you've been misled. There are fortunately other methods of helping the planet, like planting trees and gardens, by telling your local congressmen and women that environmental issues are of utmost concern and by spreading awareness and by keeping up on current events. If vegans directed their energies in a different direction we'd be on to something and their energies could make an impact. Also keep in mind that the science and math used to calculate the imprint of rumiants is more than complex and can be inaccurate. For instance, grass fed cows have a fraction of output compared to factory animals. Think of the bison that once roamed the plains and how harmonious this was for the environment.

Do you seek out vegan beauty products? If yes, why?

No, it's not something I look for.

If hypothetically choosing between two products with identical quality and value and one is vegan. Are you more likely to purchase one over the other? If so, which one and why?

I would potentially choose the vegan option but because I don't actively look for vegan items, I will purchase what I'm drawn to more. A product being vegan wouldn't be the deciding factor. I end up purchasing lots of products that happen to be vegan like items from Hourglass or Tarte but that's not what pulled me to the brand or product.
