I've compiled a list of gluten-free beauty products available on sephora.com.
Gluten: Gluten is a protein derived from wheat and related grains, including barley and rye. There are some cosmetics products labeled as gluten-free. If you are interested in these products look for statements like “gluten-free” or “no gluten” on the product package label. Because of periodic changes in product ingredient formulations and sources, for the most up-to-date information we recommend contacting brands directly regarding gluten-free status of their products.

Smashbox has advised that the following products do contain gluten; the rest of their line (with the exception of seasonal items such as palettes and limited edition products) are gluten-free.
Smashbox items which contain gluten:
Bionic Mascara (Jet Black), Layer Lash Primer, Halo Hydrating Perfecting Powder (all shades), Doubletake Lip Color (Praline, Sugar Spice, Cranberry), Lip Treatment SPF 15
We cannot claim that any of our products are gluten free. Some of our products contain ingredients/source of gluten [wheat germ oil, vit E etc]. As all our products are produced by the same production line and although a very strict cleansing procedure is followed after every production, we have not the possibility to check our products for traces of eventually allergical ingredients in low-value (high-ratio) proportions [parts-per-million (ppm)]. Thus we cannot claim for our products that are gluten free.
Products which do not contain gluten as an ingredient-

As an additional precaution, you should start reading the fine print on labels.
Avoid any product with these ingredients:
avena sativa (oat) kernel flour, cyclodextrin, dextrin, dextrin palmitate, hydrolyzed malt extract, hydrolyzed oat flour, hydrolyzed vegetable protein, hydrolyzed wheat flour, hydrolyzed wheat gluten, hydrolyzed wheat protein, hydrolyzed wheat protein/PVP Crosspolymer, hydrolyzed wheat starch, maltodextrin, secale cereale (rye) seed flour, triticum vulgare (wheat) germ extract, triticum vulgare germ oil, triticum vulgare gluten, triticum vulgare starch, wheat amino acids, wheat germ glycerides, wheat germamidopropalkonium chloride, wheat protein, wheatgermamidopropyl ethyldimonium ethosulfate, and yeast extract.
P.S. I'll be modifying this list as items are constantly being added and taken off our website. Feel free to add othe items I may have missed. This is still a work in progress.
Woooo!! Thank you for this list! I am just finding out about the importance of gluten free makeup now and I have been a coeliac for about 2 years! I only came across it while researching about why my skin reacts so badly to lavender so this is great! Thank you
JUST TO LET YOU ALL KNOW ABOUT ANOTHER BRAND!! I used to work for Bella Pierre makeup in House of Fraser (department store in Northern Ireland) and they have possibly the best and most reliable, pure and long lasting products I have ever come across. There are so many advantages and it's definitely better than the ever popular brand 'Bare Minerals' as it actually has (one in particular) harmful ingredients! I'm not a sales woman for them now but it was the only makeup I was actually sold on and was able to sell because I believed in it. People with cancer can use it. They use it for X-Factor (not sure if it's USA, UK or both) and use it in the top medical care facilities in the UK along with the Legally Blonde Broadway shows USA. It never expires, each product lasts about a year and they use about 5 ingredients (actually good for your skin) in most products and it doesn't melt off your face because your skin accepts it I can't believe I remembered any of that but seriously, i'm buying it now! I opted for slightly cheaper products but after finding this gluten free malarkey out I will most definitely be going onto this. It's more pricey (not extortionately) and will last WAY longer than the others, plus, the coverage was great (again, I demonstrated on customers and was so nervous when someone with Rosacea came along who was told by her doctors to NEVER use toner, I looked over at my boss and thought 'oh s***' this is going to backfire horribly but guess what? It was perfect)!
I will go now and buy this today actually, i'm sold!
Hope this helps
This list is great. I was confirmed zero gluten intolerant the beginning of this year (2013). Bummed b/c I am a makeup "collector".
Please update this list. As of April 2013, NARS is no longer 100% safe for us with any gluten intolerance or Celiac disease.
Just want to help keep all of us well. Would really appreciate this. Thanks!
I have a severe allergy to wheat, so can use products containing oat/oatmeal. I have found Maltodexterin is not a problem for me, but tocopherals that are wheat sourced are, even though there is supposed to be no protein left. If I see ingredients like soy protein and then tocopherol and then guar gum or xanthum gum, I will try the product providing it doesn't cost an arm and leg! The two gums are used as thickening agents in gluten free baking.
I have been using Maybeline Great Lash regular. I was told all waterproof mascaras have wheat, my eyes no longer stay red.
I got a severe reaction from Nars. their corp office was disgraceful in responsing about Nars, Shiseido and Cle de Peau which they previously emailed me were all GF and no CC. basically they lied and just updated their online statement.
Sunday Riley..well they assured me GF and read the ingredients closely and I found products using gluten so their credibility is gone with me.
Tocopherol: i've had huge reactions when it was not veg or soy based. companies can say they don't include gluten but you MUST insist they tell you the source of tocopherol, and when they can't assume it's from wheat.
Actually, while Maltodextrin can be made from wheat (though the FDA requires wheat-Maltodextrin to be labeled as such), it's gluten free if you just see the single word "Maltodextrin." It's safe. (there's more info on that on celiac dot com)
You did leave two things off: tocopheryl and tocopheryl acetate. They can be made from wheat, corn, or soy and unless a product is listed as gluten free, you should assume it's made from wheat.
Does anyone know what Volumizing Mascara is Gluten Free? I was diagnosed with Celiac two years ago, but have had all the symptoms since birth. I seem to have the hardest time with makeup more than anything. Any help with this will be greatly appreciated!!
All the Best,
Regarding Hourglass, not all of their makeups are gluten-free. I am using their Immaculate Liquid Powder Foundation and then brush on some of their Luminous Light to my cheek bone and temple areas. Both of those are gluten free (and labeled as such directly on the box) BUT when I was in the store purchasing this foundation, I was told that not all of the line is gluten free and the makeup artist pointed out certain items within the line that were not GF.
I just bought the GF versions of the Boscia facial cleanser, toner, moisturizer, and sunscreens in my local sephora. It's been two days and I already see that my skin is more hydrated and just happier. Before, I was using GF face products from the health foods store that were supposedly "high end" organic products, but I felt that my skin was not getting clean and becoming overly dry at the same time, which prompted me to look in Sephora for alternate items. I am so glad I found the Boscia GF items within their line.
I've suffered from Celiac Disease for years and the only skincare company that's worked for me since day 1 is Nourish Organic. They are gluten free, chemical free, 100% organic and vegan plus theyre supper CHEAP. I highly recommend them. I think their websites www.nourishorganic.com
I know this is an old post, but, it is a post by a moderator, so it's important that it be edited to reflect that NARS is _not_ gluten free. I have bought NARS products because Sephora staff told me it was gluten free, and had gluten reactions.
I see you are listing First Aid Beauty, but the first ingredient in their cream and anti-aging cream is colloidal oatmeal. Does anybody know if they use GF oats? The products get fabulous reviews and the price is excellent (about 25$ an item) and it is on your list, but does anybody have confirmation that they are really gf?
from Fist Aid Beauty's customer service:
"The colloidal oatmeal in the Ultra Repair Cream, Ultra Repair Face Moisturizer, and Ultra Repair Concentrate is gluten free. The oat flour that is used in the Ultra Repair Lip Therapy is not gluten free."

Any updates on the gluten free list? Also, if it could say the date it was updated, that would be super helpful.
I subscribe to Gluten Free Makeup Gal, who puts out a list of gluten free makeup brands / products. She just sent an "emergency" update to her list that NARS no longer guarantees their products are gluten free. Sad.
Does anyone know about Sunday Riley Effortless makeup?
I see its been awhile since anyone commented here but I wanted to add to your ingredient list a BIG one that I have huge trouble with. Tocopheryl and Tocopheryl Acetate - for Vitamin E - are quite often (but not always) wheat based and contained in almost every product that is mass produced. There are some tociopheryls that are lab based but beware of this as so many products add vitamin E for moisturizing
