So Fresh is cruelty free, there is no testing done on their products even though they are in China, is this correct?

raquelcali

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

If they are sold in China they must test.  Also, they are owned by LVMH.  And they are not on the gocrueltyfree.org site. They may have lied to you, which has happened to me me multiple times.  Companies lie all the time about their animal testing policies.  If you have more info on Fresh, please post.  Thanks.

Fresh is not cruelty free if they are indeed selling in Mainland China in physical stores. As of February 2014, there is no way around the testing policy or other companies would be doing it. Lavera tried to lie about it too, saying they made sure China did not test on their products, but then they eventually pulled out of China and said they would not return until they could sell products without testing. Not acknowledging that they lied of course...

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

I found this on HuffPo from two months ago (Go, Europe!):

y Adam Jourdan and Clare Baldwin

SHANGHAI/HONG KONG, Nov 13 (Reuters) - China is considering a rule change that would allow the sale of some cosmetics without requiring them to be tested on animals, opening up a potential route into the Chinese market for international firms opposed to the practice.

Under the potential changes, "non-specialised cosmetics" manufactured in China -- such as shampoos, soaps, nail products and some skin products -- could be sold from June 2014 without undergoing animal testing, according to the China Food and Drug Administration (CFDA).

This may enable firms which do not allow the practice, such as British cosmetics retailer The Body Shop, wholly-owned by L'Oreal S.A., to enter the country's 134 billion yuan ($22 billion) cosmetics market.

"Under the proposal, non-specialised cosmetics produced in China could avoid toxicological testing when going through risk and safety checks. This would include animal testing," the CFDA said in comments emailed to Reuters on Wednesday. They clarified a statement published on its website last week when it sought public opinion on the proposed changes.

Imported cosmetics of all types and "specialised cosmetics" made in China will not be not covered by the proposed change, the CDFA said. Specialised cosmetics include sun cream, deodorants, skin bleaching products, hair dyes and hair growth and hair removal products, according to Chinese regulations.

"The Body Shop welcomes the signals that the Chinese authorities are adopting a new approach to cosmetic testing," spokeswoman Louise Terry said in emailed comments from London.

"We have campaigned against animal testing for over 20 years and we look forward to selling our products in China one day."

Animal testing is legal in more than 80 percent of the world, including the United States. But China is the only country that has laws requiring cosmetic products be tested on animals before they come to market, according to animal protection campaigner Cruelty Free International.

Regulations require all cosmetics to go through a lengthy approval process that includes animal testing, reducing the variety of products available for sale.

Animal rights groups welcomed the proposed changes, but said that this would not mark the end of animal testing in China as ingredients used for cosmetics may still have to go through an approval process involving animal tests.

"The fact they are looking at these changes and have made this proposal is really to be welcomed. It's a significant development," Emily McIvor, senior policy adviser to Humane Society International, said by telephone from Britain.

The group is meeting the CFDA this week to urge Beijing to also include imported and specialised cosmetics.

Europe banned the sale of new cosmetics tested on animals in March and has called for countries such as the United States and China to follow suit.

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

I have mixed feeling about this since I've got loved ones in China and fake everything with dangerous ingredients are everywhere. Even with the regulations sometimes unsafe everyday product slips through the crack and I've seen knockoffs sold in dept stores. I like lifting the req for animal testing since it exposes my friends/relatives in China to better/more variety of makeup aside from being animal-friendly. With that said, I really really hope they have *some* form of rigorous testing to prevent unscrupulous people from importing/making sketchy products so there won't be another case like that fake milk powder which caused death/deformities in babies. I shall pray for this whole thing to go well. >.<

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

Please add Bite Beauty to this list - they are part of the Leaping Bunny program.

I agree with the comments that some other people have made - it's important to do your own research. If anyone wants to look into the issue of animal testing in more depth, I recommend checking out the lists at Leaping Bunny and at Paula's Choice.

Paula's Choice has an incorrect list as well. They list Stila, Smashbox, Laura Mercier, Aveda, DHC, and so on. I e-mailed them to let them know their list was incorrect and did not get a reply back. I would not trust them because even if it is an oversight, they refused to acknowledge the mistakes...On their site they say they do not list brands that sell in China, but then they list the above brands.

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

They list Stila, Smashbox, Laura Mercier, and DHC as companies that test on animals. Are you saying these companies don't test on animals? Maybe reread the site- the page on animal testing lists two groups of companies- the first group lists companies that do not test on animals. The second group lists companies that do test on animals. Maybe because they are all listed on the same page it could be a little confusing, it might be helpful to take a look at the website again.

And you're wrong about China- on their site they explicitly state that if a brand sells in China, they are automatically on the this list of companies that do test on animals. Taken from paula's choice:

IMPORTANT NOTE 1: If the company's site claims they do not test on animals but the brand has a China website or is sold by a cosmetics site selling to citizens of mainland China, we consider said brand one that tests on animals. The Chinese government requires animal testing on all imported cosmetics. So, a brand that retails there (whether online or in an actual store) must agree to this testing even though they may not test on animals themselves or endorse this practice in any other country.

I do agree though that its best to look at a number of resources that list company's animal testing policies, and too not rely only on one source. Although Paula's Choice is quite reliable, its always a good idea to get information from as many places as possible.

Hi daisydasies,

I just checked the most recent list updated on 1/8/14 (please see link above to PETA) and Bite Beauty isnt on the list.  I'd suggest reaching out to BITE directly :smileywink:

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

Hi Mia,

Leaping Bunny is not Peta - they are a separate organization of 9 partners (anti-vivisection and animal alliance groups) that have come together to put together a single standard for cruelty-free practices and labelling. They are the ones who have the Leaping Bunny logo for the approved products.

If you go to the Leaping Bunny website, and click on 'Shopping Guide' and then hit 'US and Canadian Companies', you will see that Bite Beauty is on the list (Scroll down further on the page and Urban Decay is also listed).

I hope this clarifies things!

I trust Leaping Bunny about a million times more than I trust PETA.

I think I do too. It seems to me that Leaping Bunny's process is pretty rigourous (including on-site audits).

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

Plantgarden makes some excellent points.

Another couple that just caught my eye:

  • Justin Bieber is manufactured by Elizabeth Arden and they do animal testing.
  • Urban Decay is a subsidiary of a company that does conduct animal testing.

I guess the message is, folks, really educate yourselves and don't relay on third party information (sorry, Sephora) as it can often be inaccurate, or take the word of another company without performing some sort of due diligence.

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

My personal opinion (I know you may not agree) but I will support a company that is CF even if there parent company is not, especially a company like Body Shop who is owned by Loreal but is adamant about not testing.

raquelcali

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

[ Edited ]

But the thing is, isn't your money going to support the parent company, thereby supporting animal testing?  That's my concern.

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

I actually don't disagree, but I am a huge fan of full disclosure.  Some people may disagree and be upset and disappointed if they find out a brand they love and they thought was cruelty-free was owned by a parent company that was not.  A lot of websites that list cruelty free brands also note when they're owned by a company that are not for this reason.

I also think that it helps to send a message to the parent company when their cruelty-free brands are sought after... although I realize were small, distant voices to them.

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

Just looking over the list,...

1.  Perricone is missing.

2.  Chanel does animal Testing.

I'd like to know where you compiled your information from, since some are noted as PETA and others not,...  It is inconsistent.

And to be fair, it is very hard to keep up with who's who anymore, it changes on a daily basis.   Having said that, it is irresponsible to again post information that is incomplete, misleading and inaccurate.

But then again, Sephora says they do not do animal testing on their house products (Sephora, KVD, etc) however there are 147 stores in China with the second largest Sephora store in Shanghai, the largest being in Barcelona.  And to add insult to injury,... The Shanghai store is the Sephora Flagship store.  *rethinking why I am spending $$ at Sephora*

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

Thank you for providing factual information that proves Sephora does in fact sell in China and test on animals!

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

[ Edited ]

Please consider using another resource other than PETA!!! I'm a vegan and an adoptive mom of two lovely four-legged rescue pups, and have fostered and raised many rescues in the past. PETA are verifiably responsible for killing over 90% of adoptable animals in their care at their Virginia shelter and this is their standard practice at all their shelters.  Yes, adoptable companion animals.  PETA are a proponent of kill shelters, and believe that certain breeds (eg, pits) should be completely eradicated.

There are other resources, like Leaping Bunny.

Sorry to be all soap-boxy, but this issue really bothers me.

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

Thank you!! I am a vege/pescatarian/ that has been involved in animal rescue for years and I hate PETA as well. They also believe in killing feral cats. You know, we can't have people testing on companion animals or wild cats, but killing them is fine. *SIGH* I shudder to think of the millions they sink into their crazy agenda. Not many PETA supporters heard about this, but they also sent a gift basket of vegan cookies to a animal control who announced they would change their No Kill policy and start killing for space. Sickening...
