Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

The question about China and animal testing has come up a few times so I thought I would post this. I've been a little fuzzy on it too. Today I found a great blog called the Ethical Elephant, web address is elephant-roomdotorg (outside links can't be posted so replace dot with a .) The blogger wrote a great piece called Understanding China's Animal Testing Laws 2015. In it she created a process flow that's easy to follow. I won't post it here because it's big and I don't think it will translate well in a smaller format.

Here is is additional information from the Humane Society:

1. Foreign imported ordinary cosmetics – still require animal testing
2. Domestically produced ordinary* cosmetics – animal testing no longer an absolute requirement
3. Both foreign imported and domestically produced ‘special use’** cosmetics – still require animal testing
4. Domestically produced ordinary cosmetics for foreign export only – have never required animal testing
5. Any cosmetic bought in China via a foreign e-commerce website – has never required animal testing.

*Ordinary cosmetics include make up, fragrances, skin, hair and nail care products.

**Special use cosmetics include hair dyes, perms and hair growth products, deodorants, sunscreens, skin-whitening creams, and other products that make a functional claim on the label.

Hope this helps.

I heard that China lifted their animal testing policy for cosmetic brands, does this mean that Sephora no longer tests on animals for China sales? Important because I want to start buying Sephora brand makeup but haven't because of Chinese animal testing!!

Thank you for this information. I always shop cruelty-free and happy to hear my favorite brand, Too Faced is cruelty free.

Right could someone  please  clarify  something? If I buy something  that  is  produced in Europe, where  animal  testing is banned or so I heard, but the company  also sells the product in China, where animal testing  is mandatory, has the  product  that actually  ends up in my possession actually  been tested  on animals  or not? Or to put it another  way is it the finished  product  that gets shipped over to China and then tested or are they testing ingredients  in China and then making the product? How are they able to  sell in Europe  and  China given the conflicting  legislation  regarding  animal testing? Seriously I have been  going round in circles  trying to make  sense of it all.

I am glad you asked this. I feel that if there is any association with China it's not worth the risk.

The EU ban isn't absolute, although it's a phenomenal first step.  So, if a product is sold in China, it's being tested, by law.

I feel like it is also a bit deceitful to not include some brands on the list for things that are overlooked in others. For instance, MAC's animal testing policy (at least as of last year) is the same as Sephora's, aka doesn't test unless required to by law. Both sell in China, yet Sephora gives itself a pass while MAC is now notoriously known for animal testing.

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

I checked in several lists and SEPHORA IS NOT CRUELTY FREE dont even try it!

Is your lip mixology palette vegan?

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

Leaping Bunny list is more trustworthy than Peta. And I don't see Sephora on it 😒

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

How can you claim that Sephora private label products are "cruelty free" and "have never been tested on animals"?

That is a flat out lie!  Your products are sold in China!  Where the law mandates animal testing!

If you want to sell in China, fine, but at least have the integrity to be honest your products.

right on!

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

**sigh** Ok, lets go over this again....China only mandates testing on imported finished cosmetics that contain ingredients or combinations or from sources they have not verified as safe. Also products made in China is not subject to testing. That is how a cosmetics company can sell in China and be cruelty free.

I wish everyone would stop using the "they sell in China" argument. Remember - the same companies that "sell in China" also sell in Europe which has a very strict ban against animal testing at any and every level.

So Tirah,
By saying "China only mandates testing on imported finished cosmetics that contain ingredients or combinations or from sources they have not verified as safe.", are you ALSO publicly stating that every single ingredient in every Sephora product that is sold in China has INDEED BEEN VERIFIED as "safe" by China's animal testing standards? Is that what you are telling us?

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

Tirah, for people who take animal welfare seriously, this issue is important.  Cosmetics are a luxury item. There are many, many of us who made the choice years ago (in my case 25 years ago) not to use products from companies that condone the painful treatment of animals.  I am not going to change that now just because so many lines I used to enjoy, many of whom built their reputation on being progressive and animal-friendly (e.g. Origins, MAC, etc), decided that financial opportunity was worth tossing their principles.  Profit margins in cosmetics are huge.  They do not need to expand into China; I don't need their cosmetics.

On top of that, if you don't care about animal welfare, maybe you care about human welfare.  China has allegedly been harvesting organs from Falun Gong political prisoners for years.  David Kilgour, a Canadian MP, co-authored a report on it.  It is horrifying.  I would not trust the Chinese government on animal welfare issues if they can be that brutal to humans.

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

Sigh? Im sorry, are we bothering you with our concerns?

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

I feel like people seriously need to research before they accuse companies of lying. It's sad that some groups leave out important information that can cause brands to receive backlash even though they never tested on animals.

SEPHORA is NOT CRUELTY FREE..ANYTHING MADE IN CHINA IS tested on animals!

Re: Animal Testing, Gluten & Vegan Info

no, many products are made in china but are cruelty free. How you may ask? because it is ONLY PRODUCED THERE.

However, if they were SOLD ON THE MARKET/MALLS/SHOPS like mac and Sephora are.. They would not be cruelty free.

The reason being that animal testing for finished products is only mandatory if you plan on SELLING your items IN THE CHINESE market. If you do not, you are cruelty free.

It should be noted that if someone in china ordered makeup from outside china, that makeup would not go into the law of testing on animals.. Because it's still not sold in the market.

Another note: if the makeup is sold in hong kong but not in china, they ARE cruelty free, as Hong kong has no law that makes animal testing mandatory whatsoever!

Hope that cleared it for everyone!
