Best moisturizer for oily acne prone skin

(0) Hearts

What's the best moisturizer for oily acne prone skin? I'm 23 and still get breakouts here and there. I usually wear Olay SPF 15 moisturizer under all my foundations and the all seem to be oxidizing on my face after a few hours.. Not sure if it's the moisturizer causing this or the foundation.. Currently, I'm trying out UD Naked skin and it seems to be breaking me out. I have used Hourglass Immaculate but I found it a little dry. Possibly looking into Estee Lauder Double Wear Light.. Not a makeup guru but if anyone has suggestions on foundations or moisturizer that would really help me.

I've been using First aid beauty daily face cream for a month now and loving it so far. It's non greasy, sinks right in, doesn't pill when I apply makeup on top and doesn't irritate my acne prone skin. It's also quite affordable. Take a look at it if you have the chance.

You might want to try a sample of Philosophy's Hope Oil-Free SPF 30 Moisturizer. Its a mattifying daily moisturizer for normal to oily skin. It replaced the Hope in a Bottle formula. I haven't tried it yet because I'm still finishing up the last of my HIAB. The original formula was amazing so hopefully this one is just as good. Since HIAB didn't have spf so during the day I like using the Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration Face Sunscreen. The pros: Its has Spf 30, is oil free, moisturizes with silk protein & Shea butter, is water resistant and leaves a matte finish; the price is between $10-$13; and you can find it almost anywhere drugstore, target, walmart, etc. Cons: It does have a subtle tropical scent which can be a deal breaker for some. If my skin is really acting up I also use a mix of e.l.f.'s Mineral Blemish Powder $8 (which has sulfur and tea tree in it) and Studio Spf 45 Sunscreen powder $6. For me that combo is a good way to prevent breakouts, get some sunscreen protection and keep shine down no matter what moisturizer or primer I using.

I love love love amorepacific hydra gel. It's the best thing for my skin.  I have occasional breakouts and the AP products really helped with it.

as far as oxidation, it's really trial and error to see what will and won't. Good luck!

I would try a gel moisturizer. I have ridiculously sensitive oily skin that will break out if I don't take care of it (21 years old) but I have it under control with gel moisturizers that have aloe in them, which helps heal my skin too. I also use Urban Decay Naked foundation, but it doesn't break me out (olay did though). To help with shine control I use Bare Minerals Prime Time Oil Control foundation primer and a oil control powder on top. Another tip is to try and avoid anything with salycilic acid or benzoyl peroxide for a few months and see if that helps. Even though they are supposed to be used to clear acne, they just wreaked havoc on my skin and it took me a few months for my face to recover once I figured out what was going on.

what gel moisturizer do you use? I've returned the Naked foundation because it didn't control my oil and I saw an increase in acne.. I'm unsure about my Olay moisturizer as it has been the only constant in my regimen for about a year.. I think I may try your tip on stopping the SA and BP.

I actually switched to Korean skincare products because they tend to be pickier with their ingredients and I have yet to break out from them. I'm using Holika Holika Water March Moisture Green Full Cream (english is spotty lol) and am about to try Etude House Moistfull Aloe Soothing Gel. I get these from prettyandcute .com because they get the products directly from the companies (so they're not fake or expired like the cheap stuff on ebay) and also no tax because they're in Oregon. To work up to it I just used plain aloe vera gel from the grocery store. If you're looking for spf that won't make you oily, I cannot recommend Lioele Sun Shake Lotion enough. VERY lightweight and effective. If you do stop the SA and BP, be aware that your skin might freak out for 2-3 months at first, but then it'll settle down. Mine totally flipped out and it was horrible, but after that initial period it has NEVER been that bad again.

Thanks for your input. I actually used to use a Korean toner / spray for my acne. I can't think of the name now but it stung my face upon application with a cotton pad but it felt really good. I have been to a facialist who is Korean and she uses this on my face during my facials. I may actually go back on it depending on what she says to me next week for my appt.

I did speak to my facialist a few months ago and she mentioned that I should wear a foundation that had minerals in it since I do have hormonal break outs..

If you're looking for something that has SPF and something to cut down on the shine, I would try Murad's Oil-Control Mattifier SPF 15. It's thick and one would think it leaves a white cast, but I've learned that pressing on the creamy formula as opposed to rubbing or massaging it in helps eliminate that. If you're looking for something without SPF, I would try Murad's Skin Perfecting Lotion. Sometimes, moisturizing your skin at night helps reduce the oiliness during the day. I hope this helps and good luck!

I have been considering using Murad products. I've used the acne treatment concealer but I wasn't completely sold on it but maybe I'll give it another try.

I used the Murad concealer when it first came out. Horrible! It would highlight my dry spots where my acne was!

Since you didn't like the concealer, would you say that the Oil Control Mattifier is a better product from Murad. I guess I completely took off Murad from my list of things that work for me since the concealer was a bust.. But if you had better results from their other products I may give it a try.

I think the Murad concealer was especially drying because it contained salicylic acid in it, so I learned that a creamy concealer was the way to go. A lot of associates or even people will tell me that powdery concealers or stiffer concealers are good for acne-prone skin because it'll stick better, as opposed to slide off, but that didn't make sense to me. If your acne products are already drying, why would you pile on more drying products to highlight those areas? I guess it's because people assume oil + creamy = not a really combo. Anyway, I've tried the Murad kits in the past and they did work for me for maybe two years, but since then, I only use the mattifier. However, I think because it does such a great job at keeping my skin matte, during the winter, I would get dry patches unless I used a different powder or foundation. I think it's just mixing the combinations of moisturizers and foundations during different seasons. During the winter, I rotate between a Neutrogena sunscreen and a powder formula. Right now, I'm using the Murad mattifier and the Perricone MD No Foundation Foundation Serum. I also mix and match, like I'll put the mattifier on my T-zone and forehead and the Neutrogena on the rest of my face. I always adapt adapt adapt. By the way, my acne-prone skin looks better oily than dry too! Unsure why. I hope this helps!

I agree with you. I would rather use a creamy concealer than a powder one. I will try and look into the Murad oil control mattifier first before the entire line. I was looking at the Perricone MD no foundation foundation serum and it looks like an interesting product to use.. would you recommend it for my skin type? I really just want a product that isn't foundation to wear during school. May I ask what you use to control your acne?

Once again the website won't allow me to reply to comments, however...

"My ultimate goal is to have flawless skin without having to wear that much makeup."

I am finally doing this! It's been years since I started covering up all acne, now face is clear and staying that way. I have adult acne-prone skin also and very sensitive. After using rx's and tons of over the counter acne stuff 'forever'..a derm prescribed Aczone (dapson) gel.

No sensitivity, cleared quickly, and got rid of even under the skin bumps. Ive been using it for months, now off and on, and acne is gone and staying there. They have a website for information. Lately, I've been just wearing a tinted skincare cream.

Noticed you have purity, try it..it removes the day well, and will help balance the skin out. I use this with the rx and no issues. Also it's nice with the clarisonic.

Also if you are a big dairy eater/drinker cut back, the extra hormones don't help the skin, rather it shows along the jawline/chin as acne.

Hello! you say that you've been off and on Aczone.. I've heard reviews that it gets worse before getting better. Would you agree? Also, people have mentioned that when you go off Aczone it will come back rapidly.. I'm going to make an appointment to see if this really would work for me since my acne has been acting up a lot lately. Probably due to stress among other things.. I don't really take in much dairy products so I don't think that would be the problem.

Can you elaborate more on your experience with Aczone and how your face used to be. I'm glad it's working great for you I just hope I get the same results.

I don't see any mention of a primer being worn after your moisturizer and prior to your foundation which may help.

Though there's no exact way to pin point what will and won't oxidize on skin, the process can occur due to make up or cosmetic formulas interacting with the pH of skin which can be altered even more in cases of issues like excess oil being present.

What type of moisturizer are you looking for exactly? Are you wanting something to mattify, something just lightweight, any preference in formulations or ingredients?

I used Hourglass Veil which really was mattifying. I didn't mind it but the consistency when coming out of the bottle changed every day which is what I didn't like. I recently bought the Cover FX Mattifying primer with anti acne treatment but I haven't started using it since I want to try one new product at a time. I have been using Olay on my skin for a year now and when I wear it alone it seems to make me really shiny (probably the SPF) and I feel like my skin doesn't like being so bare.. Weird I know.. so I get some little bumps all over my face not sure if it's because the sun is hitting it..

Try to shake up the primer before dispensing, the formula is quite fluid but the silicone/dimethicone in it helps to form a barrier over oil and skin to better minimize chances of oxidation. Other S/D formulas that may help can be found in the below thread.

Which formula of the Olay SPF lotions are you using?

It is important to ensure your moisturizer is suited to your skin and also offers SPF protection.

When did you first begin to notice the bumps? Are they in a particular area? Have you notice any time frames/specifics in terms of how long they stay or take to disappear?
