Titanic in 3D

I was wondering if anyone has seen the 3D rerelease of Titanic or if anyone plans to?  Lanndan and I went to see during Easter weekend, and I believe Cameron and his crew did an excellent job of converting it to 3D.  It's not all the "in your face" 3D, but you do feel like you're there and it adds more emotion to it.  Of course, I still cried, but I came prepared with tissues! lol

I read an interesting article online the other day about how the movie being rereleased is better fitting for this time.  Due to the economy and whatnot, there is class conflict going on.  Since 9/11, some people have a better understanding of mass casualities.  I know that when I was little in the 90s and watched it via VHS, I didn't have the understanding of it that I do now.  Thus, why I bawl like a baby when the ship starts sinking and it cuts to a scene of an elderly couple cuddled in the bed as they wait for death.  The scene is also an allusion to the Macy's cofounder and his wife who would not leave her husband on the ship.

However, I wish 90s ticket prices were still around lol.

Re: Titanic in 3D

I had never seen it before and niether had the two friends i went with.

BAD IDEA. My friend was crying for half the movie, and I felt really bad. I didnt really know what to do either, because you can't say it didn't really happen, its all ok.

But other than that I really loved it, I thought it was a bit long at parts, but it was really made quite well, and the actors and actresses did wonderful jobs, you couldn't help but feel for them. And I agree, like avatar, none of the 3d was overboard or in your face3d (take note, spykids) :smileyhappy:

@berniebeauty  I'm glad you enjoyed it!!  It's the longest movie I've seen, but it would have been longer if they didn't cut the scenes.  I've seen some of them on Youtube.  What's sad is that they cut some important scenes.

Re: Titanic in 3D

Hi kimmi1115 - I didn't realize that, but it makes perfect sense. Wonder if they'll come out with an unedited or less edited version, you would think the 100th Anniv would be a good time. Maybe he'll wait for the 20th or 25th anniv of the Film itself. Wonder how much was shot and ow much he would have like to use but then had to cut; That must've been so hard to do.

Re: Titanic in 3D

Hey kimmi1115 & all others - Please Forgive The Length Of This. Hope U Can Get Thru It

I coincidentally saw Titanic again on Cable about 6 -8 weeks ago. Still don't love 'Leo' cast in that role, I know, here come the death threats!! Sorry. He didn't bother me quite as much this time, but still would've cast somebody else, but that's just me. I do LOVE the movie though, no doubt about that. Didn't see it in theatres when it first came out. Dances with wolves is another one that would be great in the theatre.

I was fascinated with the Titanic long before James Cameron's movie came out. Probably watched every documentary there is. Just something about that story that always haunted me. There was another movie that I'd only seen once before that TCM aired over the weekend called "A Night To Remember"  I saw it  before James Cameron's version, I think it was made in the late 50's. It was good, might be interesting for real enthusiasts to see. Don't want to give any details away, obviously there's no real "spoiler alert'  But I would love to know what others thought of it. PM me if you like.

THIS IS INTERESTING -- Something I didn't know was that during WWII the Germans were filming their own version of the Titanic! There was a documentary called "**bleep** Titanic" I think it was on the History Channel or History 2 last weekend - Of course, they were trying to show how Germans helped out and I'm guessing, save people. Unfortunately I only saw less than half of the 2 hr documentary, would love to see the whole thing. It was absolutely fascinating. I saw the end (30-40 min) of the Docu. and it was a fitting end to some of those involved. I'm keeping my eyes peeled for it. I'd love to see the complete movie too. They did say that in the movie 'A Night To Remember' they used some scenes from the '**bleep** titanic' movie. Can you imagine?

I'd LOVE to see the 3D version, Seeing that ship and the grand staircase and the clothing....oohhh. Forgive me for being superficial. I want to see the rest of it in 3D too, I just recall how I gasped during those opening scenes. It was just such a masterful movie, what James Cameron did was beyond incredible. I always wonder what he'd do differently if he did the movie now.  I'm a little concerned about seeing things like the people in the water. That was pretty traumatic, I had a hard time with that when it wasn't in 3D! But then I slap myself upside the head and say wake up woman!!! and realize that little bit of 'suffering' and discomfort on my part - having to watch that - is nothing compared to what they had to deal with. It almost seems like seeing that would be a sort of tribute.

Don't know if I'll be able to see it in 3D for a few reasons though. For a couple of reasons, none ot the 'weenies' here want to go see it and I've got some physical issues that make it difficult to sit for that long and I have to wear earplugs, which is no big deal, I'm used to doing that when I go to the movies. I'm also not sure I can watch it in 3D, The doctors think that I had something called "Minnears Disease" I was tucked into bed, with pillows shoved all around me because I was so dizzy, even lying in the middle of the bed I felt like I was falling out. Couldn't sit, stand or even get to the bathroom myself, the dizziness was so far beyond extreme, I couldn't even take a step by myself. and I had major nauseau, (have had that b4 and since, so that was the least of my worries) I was in bed like that for 40 days. The exact 40 days leading up to Easter...Although I didn't realize it at the time.

Ever since, a lot of patterns make me dizzy, woozy - and I love patterns. Stripes do it, a crooked wall in a room can do it, elevators...ugh. I had to have bloodwork done twice in the past few weeks and the lab is upstairs in a building (by elevator) then, there's a 'breeze-way' for lack of a better terminology, there were railings on both sides and it was about 4-5 feet wide. Oh man, I can't tell you how hard it was to get through that section and to the lab. I felt my whole body tense up and my mother, who was with me, is sympathetic, but thought it was funny as anything. I guess it's because of the way I tense up, I pull every bit of my body as tight and close to myself as humanly possible and I think I close my eyes really tight, don't remember. Tried to block it out, probably was funny to see though. All kinds of things set it off and I don't usually know until it's already happening. Everyone is giving me a hard time because they don't think I'll be able to do 3D.

What do you guys think??? I'm not sure if it is also in I-max here. Any thoughts, comments or ideas?

!!!!!! The other biggie I need to see is "Chimpanzee" think it opens tonight (friday) The profits from the 1st week are going to the Jane Goodall Research Society (not sure if that's the right name - it's going to her charity)

Hope somebody was able to get through this, sorry so very long -winded. Hope you'll send feedback on whatever areas you were able to get through or that interested you. Thanks everybody. :smileyhappy: :smileyhappy:

@kssweetheart  I've seen 'A Night to Remember' as well, and it's really good, too.  It took a while, but my mom finally found a DVD of it on eBay or Amazon.  She is the online shopping queen lol.

Re: Titanic in 3D

@kimmi1115 and @kssweetheart I've seen that movie too, it was definitely interesting and fun to watch! Older movies are fun, sometimes I like the lack of fancy effects and enjoy the basics :smileyhappy:

Re: Titanic in 3D

@kimmi1115 & dianabt - it was a good movie, wasn't it? I also love seeing old movies. I love early movie making attempts and effects. Did you guys think it seemed a bit more violent though?

I like to watch "The Essentials" with Robert Osborne on TCM, Saturday nights 8p. He talks with another celeb about the "Essential" movie they've chosen for the evening. Was Alec Baldwin (sigh) Now it's Drew Barrymore. I've watched a lot of movies I would not normally have watched. I saw a Charlie Chaplin movie a few months back and absolutely LOVED it. Probably wouldn't have seen it in it's entirety, can't think of the name. duh. Anyhow, I love watching him and most of the movies they show. Just wondered if you ever watched him.

Re: Titanic in 3D

@kssweetheart  It's been a while since I've watched it.  The book, however, is supposed to be very accurate accounts of what happened that night in 1912.  I've not read it yet, but it's in my Titanic book lineup.  I've been reading textbooks all semester long.

Anyway, I've seen a few older movies and shows, mainly shows.  My boyfriend LOVES to watch old shows on TVLand and Netflix.  I got him a cable for his iPhone that can hook into a tv so videos and films can be watched on it.  Yesterday, he came up and we watched Leave It To Beaver, one of his favorites lol.

@ kimmi

I hate it when scenes that should've been kept are taken out. But if I get bored with it a movie this long, then I guess its a good thing. They have to do their job somehow, right? :smileyhappy:

Re: Titanic in 3D

To be honest, I don't remember going to the theater to see the movie.. Myabe I did? I do know I have some ridiculous fancy VHS tape box set of the movie.. LOL.

I have seen a ton of specials on TV lately, fun to watch the history. I watched a special on PBS with Len Goodman from "Dancing with the Stars" hosting and he traveled to England and Scotland (or was it Ireland?) to speak with long last family members of passengers to reveal and learn more information on their lives. Pretty cool to watch, but I'll still NEVER go on a cruise ship. I don't care how safe or luxury or fantastic they are.. the idea of a sinking ship in wide open waters has frightened me since I was a child. Maybe it was watching "Reading Rainbow" episodes where Levar Burton showed a diving robot machine/submarine that was going underwater to explore the ruins.

It may be cool to see the movie in 3D though! :smileyhappy: Imax and 3D? LoL that sounds intense!

I saw it four times in the theater when I was 16, but of course I had to go see it again upon re-release. I will say -- I have seen it a few times on VHS / DVD in between, and it is definitely, definitely a big screen movie. I would recommend (to anyone who (by virtue of age or choice) did not see it in the theaters when it came out to do so now, even if it's not the 3D version (my local theater was showing the regular digital version, too). I had kind of forgotten how disturbing it was, though...!

kimmi1115

Re: Titanic in 3D

@katie1724  I agree, the movie has a bigger effect on the big screen.  While watching it at home (and for pretty much any movie), my dad turns on the surround sound.  Even that makes a difference.  Although this sounds disturbing (and I apologize), you can hear the people hitting the water and the deep creaking of the ship.  It's even louder in the theatre.

@dianabt  I'm not sure about going on a cruise either lol.  Especially after the Costa Concordia (?).  I'll want an extremely thorough background check on the captain first lol.

Re: Titanic in 3D

I absolutely LOVE the Titanic! I definitely plan on seeing it in 3D! It's weird because I remember watching it when I was really little and it always being my favorite movie. I talked to my mom about it and she said that I literally watched it everyday even though I was 2. I don't know why I loved it so much when I was younger, because I can definitely say that I had no idea what was going on then :smileytongue: haha. Now that I'm older, I know whats going on, and even though it's horribly sad, I still really really love it! Lol, I can not wait to see it in 3D!

Re: Titanic in 3D

I saw the movie in theaters when it forst came out and I hate the gimmics the movie people come up with to make more money. I would like to see it in 3D but I refuse to spend the money on it again...Its on TV all the time...but I do love the movie and watch it over and over again when its on.

Re: Titanic in 3D

I'd like to see this one, I saw the last one and found it enjoyable. Maybe when it comes to a theater a little closer than an hour away, by then the ticket price may come down.

@janine-  I was one of those people who hadn't seen Titanic up until about a year ago, I just missed it in the theaters, I finally saw it on TCM. I'm definitely not a trend follower when it comes to movies. lol

Nice topic kimmi :smileyhappy:

Hmm I was playing with the idea of going. Like many, I was Titanic OBSESSED when it first came out. I still remember seeing it in theatres! It was mass chaos, every showing was selling out like crazy. I have never (and possibly will never) see a movie franchise that big. I really enjoy going to the movies, and it's been a while since something good has come out...so maybe I'll end up going to see the golden favorite. The only other 3D movie I've seen is Avatar. I find the whole 3D aspect to be slightly distracting haha.

I know that part of the reason for the re-release was also due to the fact that this past weekend was the 100 year anniversary of the sinking. The history channel has been playing a bunch of shows about the ship, I actually enjoyed the tail end of one documentary about the ship. QVC was also going Titanic wild this week, they were selling jewelry replicas of items that were worn by the elite ship passengers.

Has anyone ever met someone that HASN'T see Titanic? I know two people that haven't...well one was actually planning on seeing it during the re-release! It always kind of baffling when you meet someone that refuses or has no desire to see a movie that is a worldwide phenomenon.

Whimsically yours,
Janine

Re: Titanic in 3D

My boyfriend had only seen bits and pieces of it before he watched it on the DVR with me.  I recorded it when it came on ABC Family.  With commercials, it's over 4 hours long.  Thank goodness for the fast forward button! lol.

I'm hoping it will also be rereleased on DVD soon.  I've looked at the DVD prices on ebay before.  My heart sunk like the Titanic when I saw some of the prices.  Even for a used copy!!  At least I found the soundtrack at a decent price.

My mom recorded some documentaries that aired during the week.  I haven't been able to watch them all yet, but the new James Cameron one is very interesting.  He and other Titanic experts attempted to answer some new questions.  Through all of that, there is now a new theory as to how the ship sunk.  It still splits in half and whatnot, but it wasn't in the spot that was in film.  They also answered how certain damage occured to the ship and what all caused the debris field around the wreck site.  Very interesting.
