Getting Personal

I just wanted to tell you guys how much you help me out.  I suffer from EXTREME Depressive Disorder. I'm actually on Disability for it even though I was able to get a Degree with a Concentration and 2 Minors at NCState and work till I was 30.  This board has helped me to interact with other people instead of going into myself. It''s gotten me to get up, get dressed, AND put makeup on :smileywink:, and laugh (really hard).  I even got to do something for someone else with TSB and went out to the Post Office twice that day (my parents were in shock I think :smileyhappy:  So I just wanted to thank you so much for just being apart of this board because if you wern't on it, it wouldn't be the same!

gahhh... Just found out all the electrical sockets/outlets in the basement do not work.  The lighting and appliances work so at least I'm not wandering in the dark or without a/c.  Unplugged everything until I can have someone look at it.  No handheld vac and the central one might not be safe to use if by chance it's water related (I like tidying up ;/).  No signs of watermarks or water damage but I'm not taking my chances.

Checked the circuit breakers and nothing got swapped off.  It's too late to read those so I'll just have to wait till morning.

I might have one theory why this happened.  One item that was plugged into the wall does not have a CE thingy or certified label.  Who knows how much wattage it could have been improperly distributing.  It does not belong to me either.  He might not hear the end of this if that is the case.  :smileytongue:

The joys of home repair.  XD  I am usually not one to complain but some situations are just annoying when you find out about them and it's too late to do anything.

Re: Getting Personal

@ran8: Hopefully it's a simple and inexpensive repair-- or covered by homeowner's insurance!! Good luck!

Me too.  I hope it's a safety precaution and not something serious.  Been up and downstairs this morning looking at the circuit breaker and what not.  Apparently the bathroom plug works.  But for now, still keeping everything unplugged down there and I will hear the verdict from an actual electrician.  If anything, maybe I will learn something out of it.

The sad thing is I only noticed the problem when the motion lights did not come on.  I really hope this has not been going on for too long.  Tried googling and it was all ads and moonspeak.  In no shape or form am I a certified electrician so I thought it best not to meddle with wires.

It's like my parents said:  welcome to homeownership.

Tomorrow will be a long day.  A very long day (it was already going to be busy before all of this happening).  Time to clean up the basement with what I got.  It's usually a man cave down there.

Re: Getting Personal

Oh, ran8, I'm so sorry to hear about your dilemma!  Owning a home is great, but when something tears up it's a big pain in the rear.  I hope you're able to get it all fixed easily and relatively inexpensively.  I'll be sending positive thoughts and vibes your way.

Good luck!

Hooray it was just a circuit trip and a hard to find gfi (that's how he pronounced it).  Found out whoever finished the basement did not think this one though and the amp amount is pitiful for the amount of square footage and the connections (at least not an immediate safety concern since too much will just trip the circuit).  If we ever have a big renovation down there, guess that will be the time to redo the breaker too.  Found out where all my stuff is in case it happens again.

So this might mean another trip to the hardware store to replace the incandescents with LEDs (see if I can get the ones that are a warm/soft light).  I find it sad that I am the one who gets excited to go to tool and home improvement stores.

Thank you everyone for the positive vibes and thoughts.

Re: Getting Personal

@ran8-  Glad to hear that your electrical issues got cleared up. Electrical things can be so tricky and irritating when they go wrong. At least you were safe through the whole episode.

@mermadelove-  So sorry to hear that your migraines are acting up again. I was really hoping you had them conquered or at least tamed.  My heart goes out to you.

Re: Getting Personal

Instead of disappearing because I'm upset, I'm just going to pout here for a few minutes! Yaaaaay!!! It's time for my third day with a migraine coming on! I have dinner plans with a friend I haven't seen in a few weeks and of course, now, I am in NO mood to go out because I'm feeling cranky and headachey and it'll only get worse if I don't take my medication-- again. I know logically that if Ijust take it now I'll probably feel better by the time it's time to go out, but I just get so sick of the things that set my brain on fire!!! Generally I get these for 3-4 days twice a month, hormone related, but other things set me off, too. Like the weather. Or certain foods. Or looking at me funny and days that end in "y" -- at least that's what it feels like sometimes! I know I could have a much "more serious" disease, but sometimes it just sucks to have to watch what I eat, when I eat, where I sleep, when I sleep, the Weather channel, blah blah blah just so I can avoid the confusion, tingling, moodiness and pain that comes with migraine!!

Re: Getting Personal

@ran8:  Glad it was nothing too serious to fix!  On the bright side, at least now you know what electrical socket trips what switch.  I still haven't figured out what's what in the breaker box in my home which I've lived in for about 23 years now, ha ha.
:smileyhappy:

@mermadelove:  I'm so sorry to hear that you're still having such a terrible time with the migraines!  I know how you feel about the triggers.  Sometimes I get so irritated because I can't eat what I want to eat because of watching out for MSG and having to run by department store perfume counters as quickly as possible before I get a whiff of some fragrance that'll set my head off.  It's perfectly OK to come here to vent your frustrations.  I wish I could do something to help.  I will be wishing you well and hope you feel better soon!

Re: Getting Personal

Well, those of you who have been subscribed to the "Getting Personal" thread from the beginning have heard me complain about my shoulder before.  Here I am again, complaining about the pain.  I get so tired of being in pain all the time.  I finally saw a shoulder specialist and I am going to have surgery.  The surgeon says it is really at the point that it needs to be replaced, but I'm too young for that, so he said he thinks that going in and cleaning it out, shaving off bone spurs and shaving off part of my collar bone should give me more room in there and hopefully less pain.  He said he thinks he can work it so I can wait a few fairly painless years before replacing it.  What's bad is he looked at an old X-ray of my other shoulder and said that it is probably in just as bad or worse shape as this one is right now, but it's just not been aggravated like the right one has, which I'm sure is from holding my grandson.  The doc said after shoulder replacement I would never be able to carry around a 20-something-pound baby (or anything that heavy) ever again and I'm hoping for more grandchildren so I'm not planning on replacement until my grandkid(s) are too old to carry, ha ha.  I was supposed to have the surgery the 2nd week of July, but since our family is going to Orlando for vacation at Universal Studios, Sea World, etc., the first part of August, I decided to postpone the surgery until August 18th.  I want to be able to ride as many rides as my shoulder will allow before being cut on because afterwards I understand it's a long healing process and if I had surgery before going I'd still be in too much pain to ride the amusement park rides and go to waterparks, etc.  I may have arthritis and basically worn-out joints, but I still feel 20-something in my mind and like to have fun, ha ha.  If I hadn't been a workout addict all through my 20s I wouldn't be in this shape now.  I used to lift weights and do aerobics at least 2 to 3 hours a day, 7 days a week.  I had a chiseled six-pack, but I'm really paying for it now.  I was so stupid to overwork myself like that!  Oh well, what's done is done and complaining isn't going to change anything so I guess this is enough complaining for now, ha ha.  I just needed to vent some frustration over this stupid pain.  Thanks to all of you on this thread for listening.  And, a special thank you to katimae for starting this thread in the first place.  It's nice to have a place to go and just say what's on your mind.  Have a great day, everyone!

Re: Getting Personal

Wow, I can only imagine how much pain you are in because I had a bad knee injury and probably will have to get knee surgery one of these days.  I hope after your surgery you are feeling better and that it improves the pain. Sorry to hear this! I wish you best of luck and a safe surgery and a great vacation!

Re: Getting Personal

@tenngal & empathize & memadalove- I haven't checked beauty talk in a while.  I'm sorry for all of the pain you guys are going through.  I can empathise.   I had surgery to reconstruct my ankle last October.  I'm still not completely healed and it's throwing off everything else where my back, knees, hips hurt.   This getting old stuff stinks.  I will pray hard for you all and hope for some relief.

@lashreece:  Sorry to hear that you are in pain, too, sweetie.  You're right, it gets very tiresome and it stinks!  Glad that you're on the mend and I'll be praying for you, too.

Thanks to all of you who have read and responded about my recent shoulder complaint.  You all are so wonderful to listen to my complaints and send back kind words in return, which gives me encouragement.  You, my fellow Beauty Talkers, definitely know how to brighten up my day!  Thanks, again!

Re: Getting Personal

OK!!! FREAKING OUT!!!  I'm going to Antigua with roommate Bob!!!  To the most romantic hotel there.  I can't believe it.  What am I thinking?  What is he thinking?  You have to wear a dress to dinner. I don't think I have that many beachy dresses (sorry, my "e" isn't working well.) And I don't want to take a lot of clothes and make up.  Oh God what do I pack? I can't spend a dime now because all my money has to go to paying for the trip and any extra goes to spending money while I'm there. I mean I'm still hippy enough that all the dresses I do have are island-y.  But oh my gosh, I can't believe the whole thing.   He and I are still just friends. I don't know what to think.

Re: Getting Personal

Oh, katimae, I'm so excited for you!!!  This beach vacation is the perfect atmosphere for the possibility of your relationship turning into more than friendship.  And if it doesn't turn romantic, then it's still great because you'll still be having a super vacation with your very close friend!  As far as beachy dresses go, I'll bet your closet has a lot of hippy-looking clothes still hanging there (like mine does, ha ha) that'll be perfect for the beach.  If you feel like you need to pick up a few new things anyway, then I think mermadelove is right on about T.J.Maxx or sometimes you can get lucky at a consignment shop and find some really cute things.  Gosh, I'm just so excited for you!

@katimae:  I'm SO sorry to hear about your fall, and I'm sorry you're in such pain.  On the bright side, thank God you didn't get a head injury or something worse.  Try to rest, keep ice on it to keep swelling down and hopefully it'll start feeling better soon.  I'll send positive thoughts and energy your way for a speedy recovery so when it comes time for your beach vacation you'll be healed and ready to have fun!  Again, I'm sorry you had this accident and I wish you a very quick recovery!!!

Re: Getting Personal

@katiemae: Sorry to hear about those tendons! As far as I know, that can tend to hurt alot more than a broken fill-in-the-blank!!! I hope they gave you pain pills! And I'm visualizing you on the beach WITHOUT your crutches in the future!!!

@waterbaby1981: I TOTALLY relate to your story. I've had a total of 3 miscarriages and one fetal demise ( Our daughter died at 6 months gestation and I had to deliver her naturally). We've gone back and forth about trying again and/or adoption and I can tell you that the amoount of stress we've been under because of other issues in our lives has made it an interesting journey. At first I would say that I was obsessively focused on making it happen-- like Ihad to "make up " for losing all of those other babies. Then I went to the opposite extreme and couldn't even think about going through the whole thing again. NOw we are thinkiong about all of it again. Don't push yourself. Do it when you are ready.

Re: Getting Personal

@katimae: what a beautiful way to say it!!! By the way, I feel your pain with your crutches!! I hope you get better soon!!

@waterbaby: I don't have a boyfriend, so I'm not ready to have kids, so I don't understand 100% what you are going through. But my brother and my sister-in-law were having some trouble getting pregnant. She had 3 miscarriages before finally getting there. She's 6 months pregnant, and last week she was having contractions, so the doctor got her to stay in bed for the rest of the week. Anyway, all that to say that my thoughts are with you!

Re: Getting Personal

@waterbaby:  I'm adopted.  I say that I was born in the wrong place and the powers that be picked me up and dropped me off in the perfect family.  If you want to hear the detailed story just PM me, I don't mind telling it at all.  But it was honestly the best thing that ever happened to me.  I really feel I ended up right where I was suppose to be.  Adopting a child is a beautiful gift to both the child and to yourselves. I am speaking from experience.
