Childhood Favorites

This birthday party I'm going to is making me reminisce about my younger days and the simple girly things I loved.  I had a small obsession with lipgloss, I still do, I loved Lip Smackers Dr. Pepper, Soft Lips Mint and more recently (in highschool) I loved Co. Bigelow Creme Brule.  I loved Covergirl in eyeshadow in Pink Chiffon, I layer it on so thick and thought I was so pretty.  My Mom had a fancy porcelain jar with irredesent shimmer powder in it, I loved it so much, I can still remember the way it smelled.  My Mom's purse always had a Covergirl peach shimmery blush in it that made her purse smell like it does, she would use the smallest amount that was on her brush on my cheeks while I watched her put on her makeup.  I always wanted perfume, there was always a bottle of Chanel No. 5 in my Mom's drawer, I snuck it a lot.  Later she liked Elizabeth Arden Green Tea, so I used that too, I was so sneeky she always knew.

@corrin99 and katie1724 - Oh my stars. The scent of covergirl blush makes me think of my mom too, that's so funny. Wonder how many girls world-wide or covergirl-world-wide also think of there moms when they smell CG blush. Really interesting.

Old Spice makes me think of my dad. Makes my best friend think of the way her babies heads would smell after we were done playing with/holding/babysitting her kids as little ones  the scent of my dad's Old Spice would rub off on them because we all held them a lot. She still loves that smell and was moderately traumatized when she came to visit and my Dad wasn't wearing any Old Spice. They lived next door and she's 13yrs older than me so she started having babies when I was about 13. We really became one family,I spent tons of time in her house and her kids grew up in my house. Used to have a high chair for them and formula, diapers etc. She would always run out of things and call frantically "do you have wipe? dipes? baby food? It's still a running joke.  it was such a special & unique experience.

White Shoulders reminds me of my grandmother with her mandatory hat (that was held on her head with a gigantic hatpin -although she had so little hair, nobody really knows what she anchored that hatpin to) and her white gloves. Her deep red lipstick, Rouge (I have the beautiful silver compact that housed her rouge - and make no mistakes, it wasn't blush, it was ROUGE - learned that the hard way) and pearl necklace and earrings.

************************Maybe Someone Can Help Me Here********************

My grandmother wore loose face powder that was in a fairly large round 'box' I can see it, but cant think of the brand and it drives me nuts. It had a all little pastel flower petal-ish design all over it  -mostly blues & pinks - I would love to find out the name of it, does anyone have any ideas?

*************************************************************************************

I wear White Shoulders from time to time, kind of in memory of her, I do love the way it smells. A friend of mine bought a knock off brand of White Shoulders. I would always tease her when she wore it, I called it  "Beige Shoulders" It was funny at the time.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

OMG I LOVED SAILOR MOON! I had so many of the toys and stickers and magna, etc! I will be with the rest of you all watching the show if it makes a come back on the air :smileyhappy:

I loved, and still love anything and everything Sanrio and Hello Kitty! I don't think I will ever outgrow this, but I don't mind :smileyhappy:

A blast from the past that I recently rediscovered is the Hello Panda chocolate filled biscuts!  I used to kill these as a child, and there's a store here in Louisville that sells them now! I'm so happy! This is such a yummy little treat :smileyhappy:

Re: Childhood Favorites

I have strong memories of the fragrances worn by the women in my family. My relatives were fanatics for Emeraude by Coty. I'm sure it isn't made anymore, I seem to recall it had a powdery dry down that smelled somewhat exotic, but also somewhat dusty. I used to spray it in my hand-me-down purse that one of my relatives, I forget who, gave to me to play dress up with. I also got a spritz of it from my mom on my handkerchief that I put in my real purse to go to church with. (Along with the white gloves, remember those)?

My relatives weren't big make up fanatics like I am, wonder where I got that from? Mom just had mascara, black eyebrow pencil (even though she didn't have black eyebrows, I think she was channelling Audrey Hepburn) and the odd lipstick. I had cherry chapsticks and bubble baths. Remember Mr Bubble?  It definitely wasn't beauty oriented, it had a weird smell and gave me a rash! lol

Aww, the smell of CoverGirl blush still makes me think of my mom -- she always wore it, too. It had a really distinct smell, too -- it didn't even smell like a specific fragrance...I don't know how to describe it.

I was obsessed with Bonne Bell Lipsmackers -- I must have had 40 by the time I was in middle school. My favorite was Starfruit -- I loved how it smelled.

I also *LOVED* Maybelline Kissing Koolers -- does anyone 30+ remember them?? I used to (unintentionally) layer the watermelon shade so heavily that my lips looked grey! Hahah! Maybelline must really have stuffed these with preservatives, because (don't judge!) I still have one, and it's retained the same consistency, smell, etc. It kind of makes you wonder what's in them! (Same with a Bonne Bell balm I still have! Don't worry, though, these are the only two things that remain of my circa 1995 collection :smileywink:)

kissing%2Bkoolers.jpg

I also used to love the smell of Fendi -- it was my favorite perfume in the world. My grandmother wore it, and I would always spray myself (and whatever stuffed animal happened to be with me) with it so I would smell like her :smileyhappy:

Re: Childhood Favorites

What a fun thread corrin99! I clearly remember the Lip Smackers lip balms and wanting to collect all the flavors and various shaped containers as well. Thinking about Lip Smackers also brings me back to Lisa Frank and anything Sanrio. Oh the good ol days!

Thanks for the flashback and fun thread.

Cheers,

P.S. I'm glad I'm not the only one who got caught splashing my mom's perfume on. She loved Chanel No.5!

Re: Childhood Favorites

@Tiffanybt  I loved Lisa Frank!  I had a huge collection of their pencils.  Pencils were one of the very first things I collected.  I couldn't bear to use my favorite ones lol.

As a little kid, the only beauty things I recall are Lip Smackers.  I was actually tempted to pick one up at the store the other day.  They also smell amazing, and are guaranteed to be used up lol.

I had an obsession with 101 Dalmatians, and any disney dogs/talking dogs.  101 Dalmatians was the biggest one, though.  I think my room had that theme.

Herbie!!!  I still love Herbie!!  I have the DVD boxset collection, and the NASCAR one that came out about 5 years ago with Lindsay Lohan in it.

imagesCAUD8WET.jpg

I remember my Sailor Moon phase as well lol.  Actually, I went into Hot Topic yesterday and they had a few Sailor Moon t-shirts and a wallet.  I wonder if it's making a comback or something.  If it comes back on TV, I'll have to watch it lol.

Aw what a great thread! I love childhood nostolgia.

Lip smakers were my all time favorites (their gift sets always made the best presents), I still to this day buy the Dr. Pepper lip balm from time to time, yum!

I was OBSESSED with My Little Pony as a kid, I had dozens of them. I loved how they always came with a little brush and smelled like candy. I use to have My Little Pony clothes, the videos, I use to play it at school. It was seriously my obsession growing up. I recently found my pony collection when I visited my parents, I don't really know what to do with them...but selling is out of the question. Guess I'm still very much attached to them. I also got really into the whole Gigapet trend and was really into the Littlest Pet Shop toys.

All of my school supplies were from Lisa Frank for years! My favorite was the yellow lab and the dolphins. I also loved Sailor Moon! My sister and I use to look forward to watching new episodes every week day. That's kind of exciting to know that they're selling Sailor Moon stuff at Hot Topic, I love that they really play into the nostolgia thing there. Even if they brought back classic Sailor Moon episodes...I'd watch them haha. Another favorite show of mine was Pirates of Dark Water, which they ended up cancelling after a few seasons! Most people don't remember it, but I was completely addicted.

@Kimmi I was also obsessed with talking dogs. Name a dog movie from the 90s and chances are I saw it multiple times lol.

Whimsically yours,
Janine

Re: Childhood Favorites

I too had a Lisa Frank obsession.. I was CRAZY about Pound Puppies and My Little Pony too.. I had a Pound Puppy cat and a black and white dalmation that I carried EVERYWHERE with me...

And again, Sailor Moon was a big thing for me, I used to race home to catch the episodes. It's so popular in Asia that I couldn't believe when my friend sent me the link to a spin off live-action Soap Opera of the Sailor Moon characters all grown up and old. Crazy!!

My number one obsession for years.. baby sitters club, american girl and Fear street books. Hands down, no doubt about it. I had the original first version books that my sister got (she was older and could read them) and then I took over her collection which slowly tapered off.. Until I discovered thriftbooks dot com which sells out of print books that libraries around the country donated. I found a million more to buy... hahha such warm memories of those, I'm so glad I still have all mine to read.

Re: Childhood Favorites

A lot of my childhood favorite things usually involved locations and were not necessarily material items.

The skating rink and arcade were my favorite hangouts.  And when we wanted to torture my parents, blockbuster to look at video game rentals.  Usually the obscure titles (fighters, rpgs, platformers) and mario party.

Another location event may have been the family car trip.  We always had a decent supply of books (puzzles, coloring, etc).  It was always an adventure to visit certain state welcoming centers and look at the scenery.

I loved the trampoline.  Never owned one but it was always a treat to visit friends who did.  Same with the swimming pool.  Water parks were awesome on really hot and humid summer days.

Since some were on the topic of Salior Moon, I went to see how much it would cost for the complete Japanese version (all five seasons, three animated movies).  The total price is painful price to look at.  Same goes for the HQ art books (most are out of print).

I bought comic books for the art style more than the stories (early 90s).  But when the style went aesthetically sloppy, I switched over to manga for a bit.  And in the midst of graphic books, I had quite a few regular geography, fiction, and nonfiction books.  It always rained/stormed so having a library of items helped pass the time.

@Ran8 I love how you brought that up. :smileyhappy: I Spent MANY of my childhood years on a pair of pink and white rollerskates that went with me EVERYWHERE. Sunday's were the days Golden Gate Park would be closed in certain areas for biking and runners and my mom would drive my friends and I there. We would spend HOURS on our rollerskates and rollerblades going all over the park. It was so much fun and so many great memories I had.

@janine: I love the Dr. Pepper lipsmacker! It used to be one of my favorites because I really liked that it left a slight red tint compared to the others, which are pretty clear.

@diana: A few weekends ago, I discovered a ton of R.L. Stine / Fear Street books (the original editions with the good covers) at Green Apple books...and it was *glorious.* I definitely took "Wrong Number" and the one about the evil stepsister home with me, along with Christopher Pike's "Remember Me" trilogy -- has anyone read that? I used to love those books. The first one is my favorite -- I was sad to part with Shari after the end of the third book! The book I found at Green Apple was a more recently printed anthology with all three titles, but I still miss my original editions with the fun covers.

I loved Pound Puppies -- I only had one stuffed one, but I *loved* the board game!

I must be out of touch, because I never watched or heard of Sailor Moon until semi-recently -- I assumed it was a younger generation thing, but apparently I just lived under a rock! :smileyhappy:

Re: Childhood Favorites

@Katie1724 I used to love those Kissing Koolers!  I had completely forgotten about them, but when I saw the picture I could almost taste them. I also loved Christopher Pike and have thought about reading some of them again.  Sweet Valley High came out with a new book that was the Sweet Valley High gang 10 years later.  I had to get it.  It was great if you loved that series (like catching up with old friends), otherwise it would be kind of lame because it really isn't well written.

I was the same way with my pencils. Did you ever have the huge pencil that you could barely grasp? LOL. Although it already came sharpened I never wanted to use it.  I loved collecting all the folders and notebooks. I thought I was so cool because I had Lisa Frank everything for my school supplies.

I loved watching Sailor Moon, Sailor Jupiter in particular because my favorite color is green! If they do decide to make a come back I'll be watching it as well. I don't think I could outgrow that show or any cartoon. :smileyindifferent:

Cheers,

Re: Childhood Favorites

@tiffanybt  I remember those gawky things, and trying to use one at school lol.  I think the Scholastic Book Fair that would come during elementary school sold things like that along with other random items.  I remember some sort of funky highlighter they had, and a lot of people from my class bought at least one, even though we didn't highlight anything in elementary school lol.

Speaking of Blasts from the Pasts, there was a segment on the news last week about some toys being relaunched.  The ones they mentioned were The Big Wheel, G.I. Joe, and the Easy Bake Oven.  I think the anchor said the toys were being slightly redesigned for their relaunch, and some more traditional were gaining more popularity in a time where electronic toys are at the top of the toy food chain.

Re: Childhood Favorites

so...does that mean everyone that likes or liked Sailor Moon is super jealous since I have all the boxsets of the anime on DVD?:smileywink:  I also have a full set of the manga/comics in my bookcase.  However, it sounds like they're rereleasing the comics, since my 25 year old sister has been going to Barnes and Noble to collect them recently.  You can also find them on Amazon.

I definitely remember Lisa Frank folders.  I always thought they were so pretty I didn't want to use them!  Something else I definitely remember are Precious Places.  I had a ton of the sets and places that went to it, and the little keys with magnets you could move underneath the people and they could "walk" down the roads that interlocked together.  Considering that I started getting those in second grade, I'm pretty sure that only people that are my age (30) or older would remember these.

I also remember my favorite bath and body store from junior/high school.  Garden Botanika.  I wore their Heart perfume for the longest time.

Re: Childhood Favorites

@waterbaby1981  They're rereleasing the comics??  I never read the comics.  I only watched the show and had a couple of the dolls.  I'll have to check this out at Barnes and Noble lol.

@janinebt  You're not the only who refuses to sell kid stuff lol.  I refuse to part with my stuffed animals, which is still a growing collection lol.  I have some of them in my room at home and some here at my off campus apartment lol.  At home, I also still have my metal Ford Pedal Tractor.  The ones they make the most of nowdays are plastic.  I think it'd be a fun project to give it a fresh coat of paint and new decals.  Then, plant some flowers in the metal wagon that goes behind it.  It'd be a cute, country flower display lol.

@dianabt and katie1724  R.L. Stine was amazing!  I think I read all the books of his that the elementary school library had lol.  One of my favorites was one of the Super Chillers: Silent Night.  Creepy! lol  During high school, I discovered a novel he wrote for older audiences at the public library called Superstitious.  It was good as well.

Grand Champions and Breyers: Well I love horses since I was little and I remember collection Grand Champions.  For me, they were so cool and fun to play with.  As for Breyers, they were just my "collection" horses.  I still collect them and have as many as the age I am.  (Yes, I am that weird).

Lisa Frank I remember. :smileyvery-happy: I always bought those colorful folders.  They were always so lovely to me.
