Careers in beauty

Hey girls! I'm still pretty young (19) and I love makeup, I was wondering what type of careers in makeup there are besides being a makeup artist. I would especially love to hear from the mods! What did you major in at college, how did you go about getting your job now, etc?

Re: Careers in beauty

you could be a personal stylist, some do have a degree in fashion and marketing but its not necessary if you have an eye for style and beauty, i guess the hardest part would be building your clientele and reputation. the perks would be that you are your own boss and you get to shop for a living.

Re: Careers in beauty

Hi wendyomgwar!

I knew from a relatively young age that I wanted to do something within the beauty community. After working for a number of different brands I realized that I wanted to work more on the corporate side of the industry rather than as an artist directly.

In college I majored in journalism and creative writing. I've always been a huge fan of writing, so both majors felt like the perfect match for me. Journalism is one of those degrees that lends itself to a lot of different jobs. I've written for a number of different sites as a beauty expert before joining the Sephora.com social media team :smileyhappy:. I love giving written makeup advice, discussing trends, tutorials, etc.

Just know that there are a ton of different careers within the industry aside from just retail :smileyhappy:.

Whimsically yours,
Janine

Re: Careers in beauty

You can always be an esthetician in the meantime which is quite easily reached in about a year at a technical college. This way you have something to put on your resume when going into something more permanent, than again who knows you may like being an esthetician so much! I'm not one, but heard its a great starter career.

Basically you are licensed to give facials and other skin care treatments. They are also sometimes called aestheticians or facialists. They can be of great help keeping your skin looking its best, treating acne and other skin conditions. Treatments they give include a variety of facials, light chemical peels, body treatments like scrubs and wraps, and head massages.

This would be a good career if you plan on going into dermatology or something of that nature, because we all know (well should all know) that skincare comes first even  before makeup.

Interesting... I might have to look into that, it would be great learning all about that stuff and then I could give myself facials ;P lol

Re: Careers in beauty

I went to cosmetology school and ended up not liking doing hair, but i love all the knowledgable things i gained from it, I did end up loving the esthetician aspect, as a cosmetologist your licensed for Hair, Skin, and Nails. And i am looking for a job as an esthetician, It is something to look into, because you need a good understanding of skin care to do anything makeup, beauty related!

Re: Careers in beauty

I'm a marketing and management major looking to get into the beauty/fashion industry when I graduate, and from what I've looked into there are many opportunities! Advertising, promotions, management, purchasing agent and many other forms of occupations at the corporate level...if you're looking to go the business route! :smileyhappy:

Re: Careers in beauty

+1 for marketing. I'm in marketing but its nowhere near related to beauty. Oil industry to be exact.

If you have strong assets in creativity then I would suggest marketing with freelance makeup on the side if you have the time :smileytongue:

Re: Careers in beauty

I feel like there's so much to do with marketing, It definitely is an option, I wish I knew some people who actually worked in cosmetics and did these things!!!

Re: Careers in beauty

I've thought about going the business route but quite frankly I'm kind of intimidated! I don't even know which section I'd want to go to! I'm actually enrolling in business 101 this semester.

Re: Careers in beauty

I'm 16 but I decided last year that I wanted to be a dermatologist. Not really makeup but it is beauty related...I'm hoping I can help people with their skin so they can feel comfortable without makeup!

Re: Careers in beauty

I do love the fact that make up can help you dress up in a way, or become some one different. I also want to help younger girls know that they're beautiful without makeup. But I do so love my makeup!! Lol
