Anyone Use Hospice For Pets?

Has anyone here taken their furbaby to a hospice for pets?  If so, would you recommend it? Is it something you would do over again if you had to?  TIA

Re: Anyone Use Hospice For Pets?

I used Laps of Love Hospice care to come and assist with my 17 year old Lhasa Apso's passing. It was the best experience. He was surrounded by his family and allowed to die in our arms. It gave his brothers time with him and we did not have to take him to the vets. Highest recommendation. They stayed in touch after his death, made a paw print and a lock of his hair. We were able to take him to crematory the next day ourselves. As painful as his passing, they did all they could to make it a meaningful experience.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience - I really appreciate it.  I will definitely look this organization up and see if they are in my area.

Thank you all for your prayers and positive thoughts - I truly believe that they work:smileyhappy:  My sweet kitty rallied last night. She actually ate on her own, tried to groom herself, and made an attempt at playing.  We go through periods like this with her, and I am very grateful for them.  I will be researching vet-at-home options this week, and I hope to visit the hospice this weekend.  Thanks again to you all.

Sorry to hear what you're going through.  I am having a similar experience with my 14 year old, sickly dog.  It is really hard to make the right decision.  I hope for the best for you.

Re: Anyone Use Hospice For Pets?

I was a critical care veterinary technician for a decade. I read what you and your kitty are going through and the first thing I would advise, without knowing the entire medical past, is getting a second opinion or going to a specialty clinic where doctors are board certified in specialties like internal medicine, pulmonology, cardiology, and critical/emergency care. Has bloodwork been done? X-rays? Was a culture and sensitivity sent out (on the mucous/discharge from her nose/throat)?

I do not know how far you want to go with her care and it sounds like you have invested a lot of your time and heart in to caring for her. If you are wanting palliative care (making her comfortable in her last weeks/days) and not continue to seek medical treatments, there is nothing wrong with that but you have to mentally prepare yourself for when to say it is time. Different areas have different options for that type of care and probably calling one of the larger specialty clinics in your area would probably be the easiest way to find out. In many metropolitan areas there are also pet loss support groups available- in my area it is again at one of the specialty clinics.

You sound like a wonderful and dedicated pet owner and I am sorry that you are going through this. I hope that you are able to spend quality time with your pet and know that you are doing all that you can to show how much you love your kitty. I am sorry that you are dealing with this, I know we all wish they could live forever, and you have all of us to vent to when you need.

Thoughts are with you.

Thank you very much for your insight.  We have taken her to several vets and a VCA hospital.  Bloodwork and x-rays have been done, but no cultures.  I will ask about this at her regular vet visit this week.  She is 13 years old, and she is getting increasingly agitated from being poked and prodded.  I want her to be comfortable and feel I need to put her comfort over my feelings for her at this point KWIM?

Have you looked for a specialist? A few years back, our golden wasn't doing so well, ended up taking her to a place that was normal vets part of the day, then the other part specialists (the part we used). Looks like it's a VCA location (they are national)..don't remember it being that, but who knows. They took good care of her, had surgery, then we had a good few more months..I ended up being alone for the final hours with her, I understand the hardness/tiring. If someone can check in on you, even for a little bit, it will help distract your head.

I found a scrapbook online made by Pearhead, one with clay for a handprint, when the family got together (this was after the surgery) for the holidays, I took a paw print and had each family member make a scrapbook page or spread (with stickers and papers from craft stores & of course home photos throughout the years), I still haven't put the pawprint on the cover, there's a spot made for it with a picture opening.upload_7317289934049415176.jpg

Strange happening that is comforting (after she passed): still had her fur from brushing and decided to stuff a build a bear with it, went to the store the girl who helped was her name, the other girl had a friend's name who checked on me, and there was a women doing the exact same thing with the fur.

Re: Anyone Use Hospice For Pets?

The scrapbook is absolutely precious!  I will look into this.  I have some mementos from my pets that have passed on, and this looks like a great way to remember and honor them.

We actually have taken our kitty to VCA.  They gave her emergency treatment a couple of months ago. We will use that option again if absolutely necessary.  Thank you so much for your thoughtful post.

I'll share a hopeful experience I had with my childhood dog and best friend. He became very sick one day (he was a 15 year old golden retriever!) and we even took him to the vet because we thought it was time but they thought they would try a steroid shot first. It worked for a few days but then he started to slip again.

We were looking for an alternative because he was still eating and had a will to live. Long story short, we took him to a chiropractor. Yes, animal chiropractors are a real thing! What was there to lose? He had to go weekly but he got better--back to his normal self.

After several fulfilling months my best friend just stopped eating one day and died of old age a few hours later in my arms--15 years old. I cherished the extra time we had and have always been so grateful it happened that way.

If you're interested in exploring alternative options, you can find a animal chiropractor in your area if you google "AVCA Doctor Search" (it's the first link). I can't vouch for any other animal chiropractors--like human doctors and chiropractors they are all different: some require x-rays and some don't, some will travel to you and some won't--but our guy was great and I am thankful for the experience.

This may not apply to you but I thought I would share. I will hope for the best for you and your kitty and hope you both take comfort in knowing you made each other's lives richer and happier.

Re: Anyone Use Hospice For Pets?

I am so sorry to hear this rdesigns. I've been there and it is exhausting trying to decide what to do to help them, give them as much care as possible and decide when it is time to left them go peacefully.

I have not had any experience with pet hospice but I have had a vet come to the house to help a furbaby  be released from their pain & illness. I found it to be much less stressful for all involved.

I pray you strength, comfort , healing & peace as you go through this process. Please pm me if you'd like.

Hugs to you & your cat.

Re: Anyone Use Hospice For Pets?

I'm sorry you and your kitty are having a bad time. I had a cat put down when he was 19 - I had him from the time I was 11. It was very hard but his quality of life had gotten very bad (wasn't eating, in pain). The vet couldn't figure out what was wrong and it was so stressful to take him back and forth. He hated going in the car. I was able to find a vet to make the last house call. It was very sad, but very peaceful.  I haven't heard of hospice for pets. It sounds like you have been doing hospice, being at home and making your kitty as comfortable as possible. It is ok at some point to decide that you have to say good bye. It is very hard, but also ultimately the right thing to do when suffering has gotten to be too much. It helped that I had a friend by my side to be with me, and that I was able to be at home which was a comfortable place for both of us.

Re: Anyone Use Hospice For Pets?

Thank you so much for your comment - you gave me a new perspective.  I had not even thought of what I have been doing at home as hospice, but you are absolutely correct.  My only experience with hospice was when my mother died, and she was at an actual hospice facility.  It was a very caring and comforting environment.
