Did Essie's volume get smaller / Nail polish volume labeling inconsistencies?

(0) Hearts

I was looking at the volume of my Essie polishes and noticed that one of mine said 15 ml and that others said 13.5 ml. This made me wonder, did Essie lessen the volume of their polishes?

upload_1464004716712404317.jpgEssie 15 ml, 0.5 fl oz.

And then I noticed this.

Then I looked at my other polishes and saw inconsistencies with the volume labeling.

Left: 15 ml, 0.5 fl oz. Right: 14 ml, 0.5 fl oz. The fl oz is the same, but the ml is different?

Help, this is really bugging me. Can someone explain? And when looking at the volume of polish, which is more accurate of how much is in there? The ml or fl oz?

ml is definitely more accurate.  If you do conversion, 1 ml = 0.033814 oz.

So;

0.033814 oz x 15 ml = 0.50721 oz  (round down) = 0.5 oz.

0.033814 oz x 14 ml = 0.473396 oz (round up) = 0.5 oz.

0.033814 oz x 13.5 ml = 0.456489 oz (round up) = 0.5 oz.  **this is technically the lowest ml possible to still get the 0.5 oz. listing on the bottle.  If they used 13.4 ml, the oz would be 0.4531076, which would get rounded down via rounding "law" odds/evens (sorry too much math in my past) to 0.45 oz.**

In science they call this rounding error.

In business, this is called profit.

Less product for the same cost.  They all look like 0.5 oz, and since most Americans use oz. instead of ml, we tend to look at the oz., and think all bottles are the same.

Spoiledbrat is right.  This happens ALL the time.  If a product has been "rebranded" or "relabeled" you can almost be 100% sure the volume/weight/amount of product has been reduced, but the price **WON'T** be!!

The mls are more accurate. Some brands that use to package .5 oz, the standard for many years, have dropped to .4 bottles. Many of them are getting smaller, just like groceries! :smileysad:
