Makeup Beginner, Help!

I want to start investing more money into my makeup, & slowly starting building up my collection. I've been experimenting with makeup, mostly eyeshadows but I'm starting to look at things like primers, concealers...

I was just wondering what ESSENTIAL things do I need to start applying flawless makeup?

Thankss <3!

Basics, in my opinion are:

#1 is a good skin care rotine  that you follow morning and night. If you break out, Pro-Active is the best out there.

*foundation and under eye primer    ( I like Smashbox Photo-Finish)  to keep products in place all day

*eye shadow primer   (I like Urban Decay Potion)  to keep eyeshadow from creasing or fading all day

*foundation that is formulated for your skin type    (I like Bare Escentuals Mineral Make-Up for any age)

*waterproof concealer for all day wear w/o creasing   (I like Smashbox Second Skin Concealer )

*a couple of shadow sets that enhance your eye color  (always use the opposite color on the color wheel from your eye color)

*a dark brown or black eyeliner (liquid or pencil---use pencil very close under lower lashes, NOT liquid)

*maybe an eye color enhancing pencil liner as well for top lid, bottom, or both

*lipstick or gloss in a flattering color    (I like L'Oreal Liquid LipCOLOR, not Liquid Lipstick) because it stays on well and has never dried my lips.

*cream or powder blush that enhances your skintone

*bronzer to contour your face and give you a summer glow

Tools:    eye shadow brushes (2---one smaller, one larger)  these can be gotten at the drugstore

powder brush  (*for flawless application of mineral foundation)  They can be pricey, but invest in a good one and you  won't constantly be replacing it because it is shedding on your face!  I paid $40 for mine at Sephora. I do not like the Bare Escentuals  Flawless Application brush----it sheds and breaks off frequently!

blush brush (2---one for bronzer)    ask a beauty consultant which they recommend---buy good ones---they will last

               lip brush (optional)

My best advise would be to go to a Bare Escentuals Boutique, if there is one in your area, or a cosmetics store that sells the line  (Sephora/Ulta) and have a consultant do your make up. That way you can decide what you love (or hate), what you need immediately and what can wait. To build a make-up collectionl takes time and some financial committment. If youj don't like BE, go to a makeup counter at a dept. store and make an appt. to have your make-up done. YOU ARE NOT OBLIGATED to buy ANYTHING!

Hope that helped.        Pat ( BTW, I am 60 years old and still love make up!!!)

- Primers

- Brushes

Those are two essential for flawless makeup (imo). Once you actually have a little collection going, I find it fun to go along with youtube tutorials and actually trying them. :smileyhappy:

When talking about essentials, we're talking about the absolute basics when applying makeup. I like to think that less is more (in so many ways this is true because makeup isn't exactly healthy for our skin! Unless we're talking about natural or organic makeup :smileytongue: ) If you do have really good skin that doesn't need to be covered up, you're totally welcome to skip the foundation! A lot of my friends don't wear foundation on a regular basis. On the other hand, buying a good foundation right for your skin (dry, oily, combination) is also a smart investment on days you want to conceal dark circles underneath your eyes, areas around the nose and mouth (most women have redness around those areas), or to cover a pimple or zit or two! Even to even out skin tone as well. Foundation can also double as a concealer if the things you do need to conceal aren't too extravagant. Tinted moisturizer is good if you don't have a lot to cover up actually! Lose mineral powders do the same as foundation but are considered better for your skin. Pressed powdered foundation offers a matte cover.  If you don't like foundation though, don't wear it! The point of wearing makeup is to love it!
Besides my whole foundation spiel haha .. xD other essentials include a mascara! Lots of mascara's in the beauty market offers different services to our lashes! Look at your lashes now, and decide whether you'd like more lengthening.. curling.. or volumizing! Though a lot of people choose mascaras intended for all three (just to keep our eyes the center of attention of course!) Another essential item could be a lash curler as they do make a HUGE different. It really opens up your peepers :smileyvery-happy:
My last two essential items has to be blush and a lip gloss! Since your skin tone is medium/yellowish like mine, I suggest going for a blush that pops, like a beautiful rosy coral! It'll make your complexion glow! Bronzer isn't essential but in the summer, it can replace blush :smileyhappy: When dealing with lip glosses, I tend to like sheer as they aren't over done and it ties in nicely with the whole "neutral/fresh" look. I personally don't wear lip glosses too often, but Carmex! (Note: Before using any lipstick or lip gloss, make sure your lips are conditions and smooth. Carmex does the job as well as having SPF!) Again, because of your skin tone, go with something that's a nude colour (Rimmel Airy Fairy is awesome - but is a lipstick) or a natural looking lip gloss! I like Lancome Juicy Tubes because they're sheer and smells soo good! Don't go with vibrants yet as you are still beginning to build up your collection! :smileywink:
Good luck! Start off with this, and build up confidence and colours as you go about your makeup journey!

I would def recommend BareMinerals, it's a good makeup to spend money on because it lasts and is such good quality, before I used it I constantly switched colors and brands, now I don't and one foundation will last me at least six months, sometimes more.  If you're a teen I actually found it helped my acne! kept my skin clear rather than covering it with thick makeup  that added to the break outs.  Also I've found the best best eyeshadow primer to be Urban Decays primer potion!! love it and works amazing, lasts all day through school and night activities.  Urban Decay makes great eyeshadows and eyeliners.  I would say other essentials besides the primer, good foundation (and def good brushes!!)  would be mascara! always a must and eyes pop; I personally only use eyeliner when I want a more dramatic look, I have thick and long eyelashes though.  Blush or bronzer is also good for a little color

hope I could help! :smileyhappy:

Keep it simple, otherwise you won't use it.  I'd use a tinted moisturizer, blush, mascara, and tinted lip gloss as a real basic start. I like Tarte's tinted moisturizer (taking care of two steps in one!), Korres blush, Tarte's "Lights, Camera, Action" mascara, and any lipgloss that matches your skin tone.

Once you are use to those steps, start playing with eyeshadows, eyeliners, and other fun things. A primer is useful for really oily or really dry skin, but otherwise a good skin care routine covers that need pretty well.  Don't get overwhelmed and have fun!

Brushes! they make the biggest difference in the way your makeup looks! I recently started applying foundation with a brush instead of my fingers and my face looks flawless (: and also the basics like mascara, foundation, and lip gloss. hope this helps!

Hey. I suggest putting on compact power with a sponge brush, I've found it really help even out my complexion and blend it in. Mascara. always rub the end of the wand so that you don't have any extra mascara, it lead to clumps. Lip gloss, the wand is good, but maybe a brush. I think that if you really want mascara, a drug store one is good. Blush I suggest Bare Essentials! Bronze, try Stila shad 1 or 2! Eyeshadow, I like the Mac Teal, I don't have the exact name on my hands right now.... but it looks awesome on almost everyone I know! Hope this helps!!!

Definite essentials are concealer, shadow base, a great mascara, eyeliners (both mechanic and liquid), brow pencil, and good high quality brushes. concealing is so important b/c your face will look flawless once you are done. A shadow base will insure the life of your eyeshadow and keep it from creasing and of course mascara opens up your eyes and gives you sexy lashes :smileywink: and its important to have groomed brows b/c they frame your face. Plus, if you want people to notice your eyes, they will notice your eyebrows too so you can't neglect them!

Before you put your make up on you need to determine your skin type, and make sure your skin is ready to be applying makeup. Baes on if your normal - oily or combination skin, this will help you determine the best products to be using. But if you have normal skin with yellowish undertones, try using smashbox photo finish primer, and check out the Nars sheer coverage foundations. they are great for yellowish undetoned skin. when going with a liquid foundation make sure you pick up either a pressed powder or lose powder to set your foundation, if you don't want fuller coverage than what your liquid foundation is providing pick up sephora brand translucent powder either pressed or lose. Invest in a good blush look at orgasm by nars, eye shadow primer either urban decay or too faced shadow insurance, and then go nuts on colours for the eyes. If your a fan of using black liner to rim your eyes pick up make up forever they have been tested to be safe to use on rimming your eyes. Also don't forget your makeup removers!

i also agree with tennagal's recommendation, although before investing money on a lot of foundation and concealers, i'd definitely look if your skin actually needs the extra coverage or not. also i'd look into whether you want a more natural face or more made-up face, because with different foundation, you can start looking like caked on really quickly. also see which type of foundation you feel most comfortable with. i personally really like more natural face so i usually use concealer, blush, mascara, a little eyeliner if i have time. and since i get oily skin, finishing powder.

make up is all about experiment and finding out what you really like and what works for you. but i will recomend concealer, blush, mascara, eyeshadow primer, and good black eyeliner. depending on how much coverage you want, i think powder foundation is a good place to start and good finishing powder. but before all makeup starts, make sure you take care of your skin because without nice skin, your makeup won't look as nice!!

good luck and enjoy your experiment!

I second tenngal's suggestions and would add high quality brushes and a nice finishing powder.

If you have great makeup and lousy brushes, you may get frustrated by e/s that doesn't blend easily or powders that don't apply how and where you want them.

A finishing powder not only helps your face to look, well, finished, it also sets your makeup and helps your makeup last longer.

Hope that helps!

I would say the basics are foundation, eye liner, mascara, and lip gloss. You can start out with the basics (good foundation, black mascara, nude lip gloss, etc.) and get more colors and try new things as you collection grows.

I 2nd everything facesbyrachelle said. Concealing is important. I didn't realize just how important, until I went to makeup school. I used to think just cover your zits and/or any scars. It makes an amazing difference when under the eyes, around the nose and mouth is properly concealed (areas where we tend to have a lot of discoloration)! Always have a nice, clear lip gloss to keep lips looking healthy and sexy and so they don't become dry, cracked and painful. And mascara is the most essential item, aside from good foundation. If you're running low on time and can't fuss with eye and lip colors, a little mascara will make a big difference!

Re: Makeup Beginner, Help!

Definitely focus on skin care, primers, brushes, powder, foundations, nude lip and neutrel eyeshadows.
