Eyelash Curler Comparison
[ Edited ]

The best eyelash curlers really depends on people's eye shape and preference. After terrible experience with a couple of the hyped/popular curlers, I decided to do a comparison between the ones Sephora carries: Shiseido, Lancome, Tarte, Sephora and Tweezerman. Hopefully it will be of help to you, too.

Tarte, 1 replacement pad+mascara: smaller and rounder than other 4 curlers and have the squishy-est pad. Parts a bit loose and the middle comes together first so if you don’t squeeze firmly, it looks like ><.

Tarte (left) and Shiseido (right). You can see tarte is smaller and rounder.

Sephora, 2 replacement pad: Have the firmest pad of all 5 curlers. Comparable to Shiseido, both a tiny bit flatter than other curlers. When I use Shiseido and Sephora, the middle part press against my eyes first, when using Lancome, the whole side+middle press against my eyes at same time.

Shiseido, 1 replacement pad: Medium/normal firm pad, comes together evenly. It have a unique dip on the corners, unlike any other curlers. Due to vertical curve of the curler and dip, it actually irritates my eyes and it water every time I use the curler. =/

Shiseido (left) and Lancome (right). You can see the dip in Shiseido while Lancome and other curlers don't have the dip.

Lancome, 1 replacement pad: similar to Tweezerman, both very slightly rounder than Shiseido and Sephora, medium firm pad.

Tweezerman ProCurl curler, 3 replacement pad: very nice weight, feels durable. 3 replacement pad. Curls all my lashes at once. Couldn’t tell the difference between this and Lancome, except this have a nice weight and feels sturdy (none of the parts feel loose). It also says free sharpening and life time warranty (why would you sharpen your curler?)

All in all, if you've got smaller or rounder eyes, go for Tarte. If your eyes are deeper set, Shiseido curler's dip corner will help you get the corner lashes. If you like a firm pad (pro: no sharp kinks/angle. con: require more force to squeeze for a good curl), go for Sephora. Tweezerman feels nicer in my hand than Lancome, but honestly my eyes don't feel a difference when I was curling. I ended up getting the Tweezerman cuz it's got the most replacement pad, and Sephora one cuz it's sturdy and I tend to be heavy handed but don't want to crinkle/cut off my lashes.

Happy curler shopping!

Wow thank you for sharing this awesome research!! This is very informative and helpful to choose my next eyelash curler. I own shisheido and Chanel curler and was thinking to try tarte one, but I should rather try tweezerman! Tweezrman curler is exactly what I'm looking for! Thank you so much again!!

That's actually very interesting.

This weekend I had a makeover and my consultant gave me the tarte eyelash curler to use. I did find it worked ok but wasn't comfortable with it since I've used Shu umera forever... but I did find maybe it would work better if I had practice with it. I thought that in the back of my head...

I have smaller eyes (being asian) and my artist happened to be asian too, so maybe she preferred it for that reason?

I once hurt myself pretty bad with the Shu umera ones Smiley Sad Part of it got clamped on my lid.... iT was terrible. I don't think the tarte one would extend that far to ever do that to me.

I also tested the Shu S curler. Super meh. Sure it doesn't pinch, but it's too much work. The rubber pad is easy to lose because the curler's sides are open. For the price, just get the Surratt. It gets the job done in half the time. If the classic Shu and the Shu S had a baby, it would look like the Surratt Relevée. Photos below for reference.

This is an amazing guide! I got my first eyelash curler this year and had a hard time determining what made each one unique Unfortunately, the one I have just too flat for my eyes and doesn't curl that well. Thanks to your help, I'll take a look at the Tarte one.

Great info beautytester!

I have the Tweezerman and I LOVE it! It's the only kind that doesn't pinch me!

I used to have Tarte, but it broke after a year and was kind of unpredictable.

@skintester Thanks for your review of the Surratt Revelee! My mom complains that she can't find an eyelash curler that works for her, as most are too curved for her eye. This one looks like it may be perfect for her.

Great info beautytester. I'm in the market for a new eyelash curler and have been back and forth, not knowing what to get. So thank you. The Tweezerman 'Free Sharpening' actually refers to the their Tweezers and their Scissors, which are great. They have different styles of tweezers, some pointed, guessing they need sharpening, unsure about other styles. Thanks again for going the extra mile for us. Smiley Happy

I thought about getting the Shisedo one but i opted for the Kevyn Acoin instead because  i found a discount. I used the Shu uemura for a while, it was a gift and while i liked it, i don't think it fit my eye shape the best.

Thanks for the comparison! I have and love the Tarte one (after hating a couple of other popular ones like Shu Uemura). For some reason my outer eyelashes are naturally more curled than the middle ones, so the fact that the middle comes together first actually makes mine look evenly curled, whereas other curlers will over curl my outer lashes. One other thing to note is that I am also a huge fan of the Tarte handle -- I find it more comfortable to use than others and have no problem with it slipping out of my hand or anything because of the material it's covered with.

Oh thank you Beautytester! That was such a helpful and informative comparison which clarified for me my next purchase. I have smaller, deep set eyes, fine and thin lashes and found every curler I've bought, ESPECIALLY less expensive ones from Walmart or drug store beauty counters, do not work for my eye shape.  I have spent at least $40 searching for the right curler when I could've read this review and paid half as much for a quality curler that is just right for me. Keep up the awesome posts and I will bookmark this site for future reference.  The best advertisement is another person's recommendation for a product and you've done an outstanding job!  I was looking at the new Marc Jacobs mascara next.  Anyone know about that?

Sounds like the Sephora one is what I need! Thanks beauty tester for the thread and ComfyRock for leading me here in my time of need!!! You're both wonderful!!

Wow, that's a lot of research...which one did you decide was best fr you? I have the Tarte curler, it came in a kit my friend gave me with masacaras in it. Works nice for me, although I'm not sure which of those I should go for instead.

Since receiving my order of the Surratt Relevée, I've been wanting to add to this thread. I can't believe I'm saying this, but Surratt has replaced the classic Shu Uemura as my HG eyelash curler. The main difference for me is the lack of pinching. On mornings when I'm still groggy, I have to be careful not to pinch my upper eyelid with the Shu. That has never happened with Surratt, and I get the same result. Kudos to the engineer who thought of extending the tip of the Relevée curler away from the end of the lashline to prevent pinching. I'm definitely buying more of these to give as gifts. Too bad Sephora hasn't restocked. I couldn't wait so I ordered from Barney's. The packaging is a bit over the top though (it comes in it's own black suede pouch with an extra rubber pad). The Relevée dome is in between Shu and Shiseido. In terms of depth/convexity, I'd rate the three as classic Shu > Surratt Relevée > Shiseido (sorry I don't have the Shiseido to show a photo comparison as I returned it).

Look at that beautiful engineering. Seriously, just look at it!

What an awesome comparison! I was just wondering if I made a mistake purchasing the Shisheido eyelash curler a few months back instead of waiting and picking up the Lancome one, but after reading your comparison I think I made the right decision. I don't necessarily have deep set eyes, but I do like how well the Shisheido curler gets my corner lashes!

For the people wondering about the physical differences between Shu Uemura and Shiseido eyelash curlers, here are a couple of photos I took when considering which one to keep. Overall, the Shiseido is a bit wider and very much shallower than the Shu. In the end, the Shu worked better for my eye shape. Shiseido vs Shu Uemura 1.JPG

That's a lot of research, beautytester!

I like the Shu Uemura lash curler, wish Sephora carried these as it's a pain to order one from their website and they only come with one replacement curler pad so reordering is a somewhat frequent chore.

Hi Beautytester,

You really put your name to use here! Thanks so much for sharing this with us all, I've tried a number of different eyelash curlers but this is great of you to give the specifics on the pads, shape and handles on all these different brands. Smiley Happy I myself need ones that are not TOO rounded or curved since my eyes are so large, and this has some helpful tips and information for us all!

Luv&Lipgloss, Diana

Awesome post and great information. Thank you! Smiley Happy

Wow Beautytester that is such a great comparison between the eyelash curlers!  Thanks so much for posting this Smiley Happy The free sharpening offer is too funny!  I know I wouldn't want anything sharp around my eyelashes.  I know that is something they do for the tweezers, though I've had my Tweezerman tweezers for almost 16 years and they are still perfect.
