Did you see the weave on that powder brush?

Let's chat brush hairs ... synthetic, natural ... what kinds of make-up brush hairs exist and what are the pros and cons of each? Thanks!

I have to say, your post titles have literally made me giggle.

Alright~ here's the breakdown:

  • synthetic: my preferred bristle type for most things. synthetic is usually composed of taklon fibers. What this means for you is that unlike natural hair, these have a muuuuuuuuuch~ longer life span if you take care of them. They are non-porous, so they won't absorb your product as much, and they can be cleaned with straight alcohol~ making them much more hygenic. They feel nice and soft on the skin. I've also had less issues with shedding from my synthetic brushes.
  • natural hair: as it implies, these are typically made from animal hair (raccoon, goat, horse, etc). These really grip product and work great as blending/crease/shadow brushes. Depending on the hair and the age of the brush, they can be soft. However, not recommended for use with cream products. They can also shed and the hairs will break with age so that they will need to be replaced.
  • blend: there aren't too many of these brushes out there. So far the only one I've seen is the sephora stippling brush which is a mix of goat and taklon. This can be used with cream/liquid products due to the taklon fibers. They're more often than not used a foundation brushes, or even as blush/bronzer brushes.

Hope this helps!
