That's a great question oceanhugger! There's a big difference between all of them and to give you an idea of the intensity of each lip product I've listed them below from low to high pigments.
Lip Treatment - Lip treatments will have benefits to keep your lips hydrated, plump and smooth and also protected with an SPF. Some of them can be tinted such as the Fresh Sugar Rosé Tinted Lip Treatment SPF 15 or with no tint like the Nude Skincare Nude Lips .
Lip Stain - Lip stains come in different formulations such as a cream, liquid or in the form of a pencil or marker. If you're looking for a highly pigmented lip, but do not want to deal with a lipstick, then I recommend investing in a lip stain. They come in a wide array of shades and depending on the brand, they will also have benefits to keep your lips plump and hydrated. My favorite lip stains are Josie Maran Magic Marker Lip & Cheek Stain and Sephora Collection Cream Lip Stain .
Lip Gloss - Unlike lip treatments and stains, lip glosses tend to have more pigment. They also come in different finishes such as sheer, shimmer, pearlized, and shiny. Depending on the finish you're wanting to achieve most start with a sheer gloss then move up towards a shiny and pearlized for a dramatic lip. Here are a few of my favorites:
Sephora Collection Ultra Shine Lip Gloss
Lipstick - Lipstick is the most pigmented of all! They also come in different finishes: mettallic, matte, creamy, pearl, gloss, sheer, satin and shimmer. Since you mentioned you've only worn chapstick, I recommend checking out the Make Up For Ever Lipstick Finder to find the best shades that will match your complexion.

[ Edited ]Lets start with lip stick. some are more long lasting than others and its good to know which have a more pigmented color to them! I personally dont think there is a big diffrence between brands but of course someone could prove me wrong!
You might want to wait a little on those! Begginers might feel a bit uncomfertable at first wearing sch a dominent and heavy product!
Next up is Gloss. Some glosses are much "better" than others. One gloss could comferably stay on 3 hours, but another could stay on 8 hours! Now some people give terrible reviews for some glosses just because they are sticky! they could be right on or they could just be over exagerating. Glosses are the most watery of all lip products so if they are not a bit sticky....... how are they supposed to stay on!!!!!! I think you cold try fun colored glosses for sure! i have been wearing them for as long as i can remember! everyone loves a good gloss! ![]()
One of my fave make up products, lip stains. They last the longest so if your going to an on-going job and are not coming home till 7, then this would be your best bet! also dont be fooled by the color it is in the bottle! It comes out much lighter (but with color) than it appears! But keep in mind, Very few are sheer! Dont let that keep you away from a nice stain! ![]()
Lip treatments i believe are more like chapsticks and are closely related to stains (again i could be proved wrong). You could get pure treatments which most people use if they are trying to "repair" lips of dryness or other things like peeling etc. Some people use it as a beauty product only. They like the sheer colors most treatments come in! (So do i) ![]()
I hope this helped!!!!!!
