I have a good friend who owns a niche perfume shop. Since she has offered to get me my favorites at cost, I know markup is roughly 53%. I'm sure this varies greatly based on the item, store, contracts, etc.

Hahaha, good point!  I have a friend that used to work for Banana Republic, and she says they throw around 40% - 50% sales so often that they can't sell products without having them on sale.

Haha that sounds like the Balm! Sales are both good and bad for a company. In fact, I'm quite certain Sephora doesn't carry the balm or Laura Geller (anymore) because they run *too many* sales.
