Salon Tips and Tricks

I know there are a lot of people who have trouble with salons, expecially those who have naturally curly hair.  I decided in order to make this thread to have some tips and tricks to help you guys out.  Also, for anyone who knows any more, please feel free to add.

1. You don't have to pay a lot to get the results you want

This is one of the things tht people believe.  To be honest, you don't have to pay much at all.  It really depends on the stylist and how skilled they are with your hair texture.  The more skilled they are, the better off you will be.

2. Trimming hair every 6-8 weeks.

It helps out a lot, allowing your hair to get the moisture it needs.  It also stops deadends from forming and keeps hair healthy.

3. Find a salonist that fits your needs.

This is especially true for curly hair, who normally has the hardest time in finding a stylist.  When looking for one, see if the salon has any suggestions for your hair texture but be warned: if they say everyone, move on and find a different salon.  Another hint is to go to a stylist who has teh same hair texture as you.  Chances are, they will understand your hair more than what you can imagine.  Once you find that salonist, stick with them.

4. A little freedom is nice.

Don't be too picky.  Give stylist a little bit of freedom with what they do with your hair.  When I sit in the chair and they ask me what I want, I am normally like: Do whatever you think is best.  Not only does it make them happy, but it provides them with creativity freedom.

5. Have a product you cannot part without?  Bring it along!

Now, you are most likely thinking I am crazy but I am completely honest.  I bring my own products to the salon, due to the fact that I don't use sulfates or silicones.  If your stylist is good, he/she would be more than willing to work with the product and experiment.  Have problems with bringing in your own products?  Say you have an allergy to something within most products.  Salons would be more willign to compromise than have a laysuit.  This is more so for people who have specialized hair care routines.

I probably have tons more advice to give, which I will add up if I think of anything else.  Feel free to add on.

Curly haired girls should definitely try a stylist who is trained in Deva Curl cuts they cut the hair dry, and they cut each curl of the hair. Its really different, but interesting. They treat curly hair completely different which makes sense because it is.

thanks for suggesting bringing my own products to the salon. I've switched from shampoo and conditioner to Wen hair care and i will never let shampoo touch my hair again. I didn't want to hurt anybodys feelings but I can't undo the health of  my hair with products that strip it.

Those are some good tips! I HATE getting my hair cut and never change the style, but those are some good tips to pass along!

Re: Salon Tips and Tricks

If your stylist cuts your hair in a way that you really like, make sure you take a picture the same day of exactly how they cut and styled it. It will be easier for them to recreate, and you won't have to worry about them forgetting what it looked like.

If there is a few different styles you like, bring in the pictures and ask your stylist beforehand.

Try a website where you can upload a picture and see how you would look with different hairstyles and makeup. Print out one with a cut/color that looks good on you and show your stylist.

Hope these helped!

Re: Salon Tips and Tricks

My hair was cut last week, and I went in today to have a correction.  :womansurprised:  I chatted with the stylist for about 15 minutes afterward... she told me that I said all the right things at the beginning (gave her lots of info on my texture, problems which crop up in the cut, etc).  She made a great suggestion--bring pictures of yourself with *bad* hair (in addition to those pix of the styles you like) to give the stylist some visuals of what to avoid!  Kind of funny, but smart.
