which mascara will help my poor lashes grow after years of waterproof abuse?

I've noticed that my brothers lashes are at least double mine in length !! simply not accebtable, lol. It got me thinking that maybe my idea of "more is more" when it comes to mascara has damaged my lashes over the years. Basically, I'm not willing to go mascara free, but which mascara would be gentle enough to be the next best think to bare?
