Urban Decay Build your own Palette

[ Edited ]

Okay who has this item and what do you think of it? I love Urban Decay and have been using their shadows for years. I have a book of shadows and the Ammo palette and have been holding off on Naked and Naked 2 because I've never been able to use up every single color in a palette. I'm drawn to this custom made palette but realize that its costly. To buy the palette and fill it up would set me back about 120 bucks with tax *but* I would have a palette with the colors that I would actually use up. I also realize that I could just buy a few single shadows and not even bother with the clunky palette....what do you guys think? Genius or waste of money?

Now I know why I've been "ignoring" my book of shadows....its too pretty to use! I have to put it in my weekly makeup rotation!

I went to Sephora today to pick up a couple of things (very excited) and have decided that that is going to be my last purchase for awhile.

However, if I end up getting a Sephora giftcard for my birthday next month, then I'll start my build your own collection.

I've decided on.....

1. walk of shame

2. sellout

3.sin

4. maui wowie

5. naked

Still on the fence about the 6th slot.

Re: Urban Decay Build your own Palette

Okay what is the deal? The build your own palette is no longer sold at Sephora in store, Sephora online or UD online.

Is it already discontinued?

Curses!

Re: Urban Decay Build your own Palette

What?!  I received an email about a week or two ago about the new smaller palettes they were going to offer.  It would have 4 slots instead of 6 for those who may not want the bigger option.

Re: Urban Decay Build your own Palette

I know that they released a couple of quad palettes, but they seem to have removed the 6 shadow palette. I dont like the quads, it already comes with a shadow which means that I can only get 3 more colors and I can get a really good neutral quad pretty much everywhere now for a lot less than what this quad would cost me. I dont want to spend 80 bucks or more on 3 single shadows and an empty quad...I would rather pay a little more and get the 6 slots.

I'm intruiged by the MAC build your own palettes....and they have SO MANY lighter neutral colors! Wayyyy more than UD it seems like! But I dont know whether the quality of MAC powder shadows measures up to UD.

Re: Urban Decay Build your own Palette

I wonder if they're temporarily doing away with the six slot palette in order to redesign it a bit?  Perhaps for the holidays?  I think I've read on certain blogs and whatnot that there were some downfalls to the palette.  Maybe UD is listening and redesigning before the competition has a chance to make something better.  UD has already released some of the holiday items, which I think is too early for.

Re: Urban Decay Build your own Palette

I think that MAC shadows are equal to UD in quality, as long as you get the singles or Pro Pan singles. I have been disappointed with the quality of some of their palettes in the latest collections. They don't have the staying power or pigmentation of the singles.

Re: Urban Decay Build your own Palette

MAC shadows cost the same as UD, and its every makeup artists staple brand but the 3 MAC items that I do own..I'm not too happy with. But they sure do have the best color selection for all of their makeup!

Re: Urban Decay Build your own Palette

i like the creaminess of the UD formula better than MAC BUT they have some really awesome matte neutral shades and it is cheaper than UD singles....

I just read this whole thread and i think you should just pick single shades you really like and not worry about the palette until you have enough shades to fill one. I also like the shade mushroom and secret service, have you seen those? :smileyhappy:

Re: Urban Decay Build your own Palette

I think I'll email UD directly and see what they say. If they are coming out with a better palette, then I'll wait. I want something thinner, less clunky anyway (like the MAC palettes). I hate the "pop up" aspect of the palette, and there's so much wasted space in there.

jxw200--Thats exactly how I wanted to do it. Get the colors first, then the palette because seeing those empty slots would drive me bananas.

Re: Urban Decay Build your own Palette

@sephoramusthave  If emailing them doesn't work, contact them through their Facebook page if you have a Facebook.  If they don't answer you at first, there may be another person in FB land that may have some answers.

Re: Urban Decay Build your own Palette

Okay UD answered my email. They said that the 6 slot build your own is a limited edition product so when its gone, its gone for good BUT they did say that they will be coming out with MORE build your own palettes, and in all different sizes. They didnt say whether the palette will be the same format as the current ones (pop ups, bulky) or something new...so I will probably email them one more time and see what they say about that. If a new and improved build your own palette comes out, I want to wait for that instead of getting this one.

They were limited edition?  I thought they were a part of the permanent line, especially since they redesigned the single eyeshadow packaging.  It seems like brands are doing more and more limited edition items.

Re: Urban Decay Build your own Palette

Go figure right? I also thought that the point of the packaging change was so that the new build your own palettes could be used with them because when they changed the formula they *could* have kept the old packaging but they didnt. And I thought that that was because of these build your own. I'll email them one more time and see what they say about making some newer ones that arent as bulky.

kimmi1115

Re: Urban Decay Build your own Palette

I didn't think there was anything wrong with the original formula's packaging.  The new one is still nice, but I didn't see the big deal over it.  However, my mom loved how the vintage singles were on sale.  She bought backups of her favorite discontinued shades lol.

Re: Urban Decay Build your own Palette

Okay I emailed UD again and asked them whether or not the new packaging will be the same or a new and improved version and they just wrote "you'll have to wait and see!"

I have a feeling that some better ones are coming out, so I am holding out for those! Plus...knowing UD...they release new items/holiday items a LOT sooner than everyone else.

Plus I'm in no hurry to buy more shadow.

Doesnt mean that I cant plan for it though!

Re: Urban Decay Build your own Palette

Sephramusthave....where are you that tax is that much?  In Maryland, it's 6%.  Anyway, if you build it using colors from Nked that you love, then that's a smart idea if you don't already have Naked.  I haven't filled all of mine yet, and the empty slots do drive me crazy but I'm not super thrilled about the palette,, the purchase was one of those impulse buys.  Now I'm too into it to go back.  I will say that the color Freelove is amazing, it was the best one I've bought in a while.  I use it with colors from Naked and it's so pretty.  If I could, I'd go back and notbuy the pallette but still by Freelove.  Although, I probably wouldn't even know about Freelove unless I was checking it out for the pallette.  well, maybe you guyswould've mentioned it and I'd know then...anyway, think on it and maybe buy the colors first and see if it's necessary to buy the palette, it is an expensive buy but you wouldn't even notice the cost if you didn't buy it all at once.

makeupobsessed---I live in Texas and the sales tax down here is 8.25%, always has been, always will be. I know that places like New Hampshire have their taxes included in the price, I wish it was like that down here....and I realize that I dont "need" a palette to put my single shadows in, I was just thinking about getting it *instead* of Naked and Naked 2 because even though the palettes are a better deal (100 bucks for 24 full sized shadows) there's just too many colors that I wouldnt reach for on a daily basis. I have enough neutrals that I dont need both Naked palettes, and 6 shadows is enough for me to get my favorite UD shadows but not go overboard. Plus I think the naked palettes have a 2 year shelf life and there's no way I could use up 24 full sized shadows in that amount of time, even if I used the palettes everyday.

Re: Urban Decay Build your own Palette

I don't think I'd get the build your own palette, simply because of price, not to mention the fact that you could buy both naked palettes and have money left over for that price.  Besides, with a palette, you're generally usually guaranteed that all colors will go well together.  If they came out with a matte colors palette, maybe.  But otherwise, I'd likely pass on this.

....besides.  I just bought the Laura Mercier and Lancome Nordstrom exclusive kits.  I think Dan might be a little mad if I get anything else, right?  :smileywink:

BTW, tax is 8.2% here in Washington where I live...I believe it's 8.8% up in the Seattle area.

kimmi1115

Re: Urban Decay Build your own Palette

The concept is really interesting, but the price can be scary.  Depending on what all will be released for the rest of this year, I may decide to go this route.  However, I may put it off longer since I have other palettes.  Either way, I probably wouldn't buy all the shadows to fill it on the same day.  I may not be 100% sure as to what shades I want, and my Sephora in JCP may be out of the shades I want lol.

I already have a single of the new shadow formula and packaging (Freelove), and the formula is still composed of excellent quality.

Re: Urban Decay Build your own Palette

I think this is a great idea if you're not drowning in palettes -- the benefit of having shades you know you will use outweighs the cost, in my opinion. I will probably skip it because I already own too many palettes -- but if I were able to do everything over, I would make my own. There are too many shades in my current palettes (Naked, Guerlain, etc.) that get no use at all!

Re: Urban Decay Build your own Palette

I'm agree with makeupobsessed...I LOVE Urban Decay and still resist buying Naked and Naked2 because I have found so many other great palettes and options...including Sephora shadows/palettes. (Moon Baked is great). I have to send a shout out to Stila here, because their palettes are amazing -- I've *sampled* In the Light, In the Garden, etc (use the TRYSTILA code on checkout for a sample of each quad!) and they go a long way. Very impressive. I am loyal to UD for Sin Primer and I think the lip gloss is also great...Cowboy Junkie is my fave...but I am not getting hung up on the palettes. Sooo many options out there. The Build Your Own seems super expensive and when it comes down to it, not that convenient...especially if you travel often for work.

Hope this is helpful to you!!!

XOXO
