Large Pores, Oily but Dry Skin
Hello everyone. I need help. I am 21 with very strange skin. I guess you would call it combination; it is very dry around the cheek areas and a bit on my forehead but it gets extremely oily throughout the day. I have tiny bumps on my forehead that appear to be acne under my skin. I do not really break out anywhere else, however, the bumps on my forehead do not clear up! I had my son 7 months ago so I understand that may have somethign to do with it. They are so irritating, I have tried a MILLION products to clear them up and absolutely nothing has worked. I've tried different cleansers, toners, masks, moisturizers. But the problem is, it always feels dry even after moisturizer but then gets very oily.
I also have very very very large pores around my nose and on my cheeks that seem to be so apparent. I would really like a smooth complexion. I have tried at least 10 different foundations; liquids, powders, loose, minerals. I have tried endless primers, sprays, creams, etc. Needless to say, I have spent quite a pretty penny trying to a) clear my face and b) hide my pores for my than 10 minutes after applying my face makeup. Right now, I kinda skipped a lot of my products and have only been using a clay mask (3x week), a very light cleanser and moisturizer as my daily routine to see if my skin will tolerate that instead of other harsh products. I am also limiting my foundation to just a tinted moisturizer and some powder but my cheeks are very red and I do love my full coverage at times.
I just want minimized pores and a smooth complexion and for these darn bumps to get off my forehead! Please help and thanks for taking the time to read this.
I'm 25 and have similar skin, oily sometimes and dry and flakey sometimes. I have been desperate for a fix for my blemishes, I don't have that many but I hate them. I went and bought Clinique exfoliating scrub and Dramatically Different Gel. I have had these many times and it's only been a week but my pores look smaller and skin is smoother, and I'm not getting anymore blemishes. Just having a faster turnover makes my pores look smaller. As for a primer and serum, Dr. Brandt No More Pores primer is so smooth and silky and really fills in the imperfections and Clinique pore refining serum works well. Please try the scrub and lotion, I love them and think they make a world of difference.
Hi there, I have very similar skin as you do. Very oily and occasionally dry in certain places. I've had acne for years and years and tried just about everything including proscribed topicals and over the counters reccomended by dermatologists. I had honestly given up hope of finding something to work for my skin. I even avoid putting anything on my face make up wise other than eye primer, eyeshadow, eyeliner and lip products.
When I found Sephora I also ended up finding Origins. One of the stores in my area is very close to an Origins and they were offering free mini facials. I started going there once every week or two for the facials and they made a HUGE improvement in my skin! I had pretty bad black heads on my nose with visible pores and through the facials those along with the redness of my face and bumps decreased dramatically!
I purchased their Charcoal Mask and use it two or three times a week, depending on my oiliness and their Modern Friction face wash as well as their Checks and Balances face wash to rotate use. I recently purchased a Sephora Collection Face Complexion Brush for $3 on clearance and used it for the first time today and it was absolutely amazing! My sister who is a cosmetologist suggested I start moisturizing daily as well to help fight the oil so I will be trying out Origins A Perfect World™ SPF 25 Age-Defense Moisturizer with White Tea and VitaZing™ SPF 15 Energy-Boosting Moisturizer with Mangosteen.
The reason I love Origins so much is because their products are organic and 100% natural. Can't ask for anything better than that.
May I begin by saying, this is ALL WAY too familiar!!! Fear not, help is on the horizon, and my advice and product suggestions really aren't that different from what some of the other ladies have mentioned....combined process of elimiation, we must be doing something right!! I too have oil skin, but have learned that my skin can feel dry even though it looks shinier than the day is long. This is caused by a lack of moisture balance. Our skin is supposed to produce water and oil moisture, so us oily ladies feeling dry may seem crazy and strange and even impossible, but it comes down to science...lol, dear Watson! Clinique is my savior as well, the cleanser for oily skin, clarifying 3 lotion and the moisturizing gel as my twice-a-day routine. This balances my moisture issues, keeps my mores in line and helps clear blemish issues, (big, irritated ones on the cheeks and chin during 'the monthly,' and most commonly the forehead bumps). Turnaround Concentrate syrum also treat and exfoliates, (and brightens!), and Moisture Surge spray gives me that much-craved water moisture mid-day when I'm looking like a grease-slick, but feeling like bark mulch. Sorry for the looooong post -- hope this helps someone!!
I'm not an expert, but the bumps may be milia. I suggest going to a professional who knows way more about skincare than I do but in the mean time maybe check out a woman named Caroline Hirons. She has a blog called Beautymouth.com. On the side of her blogg are these 'cheat sheets' and one of them addresses milia.
I have found that she has a wealth of knowledge. For example, I have acne prone skin and foaming cleansers are the last thing I should be using on my skin and those are always the ones I pick up. Maybe Caroline may be able to answer some of those questions.
You may have Psoriasis Or another skin condition...This may be something to talk to your Dermatologist about. Cetaphil wash may help with the oiliness without causing any further irritation to your skin, and using a gentle foundation such as Bare minerals may help. Hope this helps!

Not sure if they are within the products you've tried, but I had tiny flesh colored bumps around my mouth and oily combination skin when I was 20ish. When I started using the Clinique regimen (7 day cream scrub, liquid soap for oily skin, toner 2, and Moisture Surge for oily skin), it miraculously cleared up and I had smooth skin with smaller pores. I use Origins Charcoal mask or Murad Clarifying mask when my skin feel particularly oily. I recommend you try that.
Right now I like BLISS Oxygen+C gel cream as moisturizer in the summer. It delivers a dose of antioxidants to your skin and pushes the oil out for me (I wake up oily, but I just wipe with damp towel and my skin is perfectly matte the whole day. For other gel/cream, I either wake up dry then get oily, or normal then get oily). For some people, the oily skin is the result of overcompensating when there's not enough moisture, in which case they go the opposite way with a beauty oil like Argan oil from Josie Maran or Maracuja oil from Tarte (I only use them in dry winter and they do not clog pores or irritate as long as you apply sparingly).
I try to control it through skincare so I haven't experimented with make up much. For me, the best mattifying primer is Benefit POREfessional, best foundation is MUFE Duo Mat powder, best finishing/touch up powder is Clinique Stay Matte.
Hope that helps, good luck!
My suggestion for you is to check out the Boscia detoxifying black cleanser and that line in paticular it will clean out your pores and as that happens they should get better with continued use. Remember that consistency is the way to getting a better complexion and not piling 500 products on top of each other. Hope this helps!
I have been adding more potassium and green smooyjies to my daily diet. Helped my pores alot. I believe it is the potassium. Avacados and yams cousin to the sweet potato. Potassium brings moisture to your skin. BUT !TOO much potassium can KILL you. So check with your doctor about potassium levels for your life style.
