Help! My skin suddenly went crazy on me!

I have always been very happy with my skin.  I never dealt with acne as a teen and, save for the occasional hormonal breakout, have had fairly clear, balanced skin, with blackheads on my nose and drier cheek areas in the winter.

I turned 25 last month and all of a sudden, my skin seems to have gone absolutely crazy (without me changing anything in my routine).  A facialist now categorized me as having oily skin, although not extremely oily.  My skin is also dehydrated. The last, and biggest problem for me right now is that I'm breaking out like crazy on my cheeks.  They aren't whiteheads.  They are painful, under-the-skin, large red bumps.

My skin care routine has always been: an oil free Neutrogena face wash, with my Clarisonic, exfoliating with the St. Ives apricot scrub once a week, and using the Korres Greek Yogurt moisturizer to keep my skin balanced.  Up until now, this has been working out for me.

Does anyone have product recommendations? Routines? Supplements? Creams? Cleansers? Lotions?  Basicallly anything non-perscription.

Thanks a million.

St. Ive's Apricot Scrub is NOT good for your skin. You are essentially scrubbing your skin with sharp bits of walnut shells- making lots of tiny cuts in your skin, inviting bacteria right in.

An exfoliator that has round particles in it is best for your skin- it will still get the dead skin layer off, but it does it far more gently, without cutting your skin.

Some products that have round exfoliators: Soap & Glory Greatest Scrub of All and Bliss Pore Perfecting Facial Polish.

Great advice on the scrub!  Ouch!  (I'm an RN, too!)

Definitely step away from the Clarisonic and definitely the St. Ives that is so bad for your skin . I would definitely go to the dermatologist because it's rare that you get cystic acne all of the sudden, something else might be going on.

Wow, thanks for the warning with the Clarisonic...I have cystic acne and I use it twice a day (since February)!  Yikes!!  Maybe that's why it's not going away!  Well, that, and pregnancy, and everything else, ugh.  But at least I know to back off of that a bit.

Yep, cystic acne HATES physical exfoliators.  I just used my Pomegranate Mask, in fact, and have the SOFTEST skin.  Best skin in a long, long time!

I am crazy like this and after seeing the Pomegranate mask mentioned by you I bought the 6 pack from Sephora and then the salon size from Amazon...they both shipped today...so I hope I like it!!! :smileyvery-happy:

Yay!  I didn't believe anything truly would work so well, but it does. I find I get about 4-5 applications per packet.  I use a Ziplock bag to hold the open packet until my next mask day, and it doesn't dry out that way.  I have zero irritation or redness from it, and I'm instantly more hydrated.  Very smooth skin.  Be sure to leave it on the full 10-15 minutes, though.  Don't short yourself!

Check out AmorePacific treatment enzyme peel. http://www.sephora.com/treatment-enzyme-peel-P232931

It gently exfoliates without a scrub (the powder turns into a rich lather)

I actually have a deluxe sample of that, I do like how it lathers up from a powder.  I have used it twice, but not regularly.  I should use it once a week to see if it benefits me, thanks!

It's gentle enough to use more than once a week, a lot of people use it every day. I use it in the morning on days I'm wearing makeup. It gently exfoliates without harsh manual exfoliation.

I agree: Step away from the Clairisonic!!  Acne of any type or cause is aggravated by physical exfoliation.  While it's important for us to slough off the dead cells and keep pores cleaned out, we can do so with salicylic acid and chemical/fruit enzymes.  Personally, I found my skin to change in my mid-20s, too, and then do the SAME thing with Clairisonic usage.  My skin is finally softer, smoother, and less blemish prone once I figured out that I was literally making my skin mad AND making it produce more oil.  More oil-->more blemishes.

So, I use Murad's Pomegranate Mask twice weekly to get rid of those cells and hydrate my skin.  Murad's blue line is great, but it is expensive and, for me, a little too strong.  Right now, I'm finishing up Renee Rouleau's line, which has really been a game-changer for me.

Good luck!

Put down the scrub and the Clarisonic!

OK, now let's talk... I'd recommend finding a moisturizing face wash- something like Shiseido The Skincare (since you're still in your 20s).  One of the reasons you might be so oily is because you're stripping out so much of the oil/moisture so it's going nuts trying to compensate.  You can do a lot to fix the hydration balance on your own.

I know it sounds counter intuitive, but step up the moisturizing until your skin comes back into hydration balance.

You'll need to see a dermatologist for help with the cystic acne, but lets make sure it's not being triggered with the overexfoliation and drying out your skin first.

Well, it's tough to know EXACTLY why YOUR skin might be suddenly reacting poorly.  However, a very common problem is over-exfoliating - and it sounds like that could easily be your problem!  Using the Clarisonic every day plus the exfoliating scrub might just be too much for your skin, which can cause cystic breakouts and dryness (which is such a horrifying combination, I know!).

I would recommend cutting down the Clarisonic use to once per week and hold off on the exfoliating scrubs.  If that doesn't help anything, I think your best bet would be to make an appointment with a dermatologist.  Cystic acne is so very often hormonal, meaning topical treatments just aren't effective in treating or preventing breakouts.

Good luck!

Hi Danimazz How frustrating! :smileysad: I think your best bet right now is to see a Dermatologist.  If nothing in your routine (products, food, medication) has changed it could be hormonal. What you are describing sounds like cystic acne which is difficult to treat with over the counter products.
